Singleton is holding its biennial Arts Prize this month as part of the Arts Festival throughout the town. The competition attracts great artists from all over Australia and it’s only just over an hour’s drive from Newcastle so well worth the day out. If you’re just a big kid at heart then you’ll be pleased to know that you can take the family along to see Santa at Richmond Vale Railway Museum near Cessnock on the 13th July. All aboard! See page 31 for more details.

Nature lovers and outdoorsy types will no doubt be looking forward to The Hunter Wetlands canoeing adventure days, breakfast with the birds and midnight prowl during July.

How do you store your garlic?Have you ever wondered what the best way to store garlic is? I know I’ve been asked this question many times!

A lot of people (even wholesalers of fruit and veg) think that garlic is best stored in the fridge. This is wrong. This will only encourage the garlic to think that it’s time to sprout again, as garlic will sprout with the onset of the cooler winter months.

Some people have tried to freeze garlic, but this does not seem to work either. Though it might prolong the life of garlic, it tends to lose its flavour. Vacuum sealing the garlic might help, but my experience says that it doesn’t as the garlic exudes a gas that deteriorates the garlic.

The best way to store garlic is in a dry environment, well ventilated and at a comfortable room temperature (i.e. from

10C to 30C).

It’s best to avoid enclosing garlic as it likes to “breathe”.

Garlic is happiest sitting in a fruit bowl or in a ventilated jar and sitting on your kitchen counter. There won’t be any aroma unless it’s cut open and it doesn’t attract flies or other insects either.

Storing garlic correctly will allow you to enjoy your garlic for months.

Insuring your treasured artworks ... is it necessary ?Many clients have asked whether they should insure their art? i.e. past, recently purchased or those gifted or inherited.

My response is certainly; if you want to protect its replacement value in the event of a loss!

Ask yourself, "Can I afford not to insure my art?" - not just for financial reasons but am I comfortable with accepting a loss. Whilst losses are usually identified as material or financial; consider the sentimental!

A current valuation within the past two years will need to be furnished to your insurance company for you to claim a loss or damage to your artwork at either your home or business. Your artwork must be individually listed within your “Contents Section” of the

Insurance Policy when it is over a ceiling value. Each insurance company has varying limits/dollar value which you will need to understand to assess if the artwork does require a valuation anyway. Valuations must clearly state the name of artist, title, year, size, medium and have a recently insured value. Furthermore they need to be prepared by an acknowledged professional who is involved with the art market.

What Art is Insurable?Insurance valuations are designed for original works of art, not manufactured prints, general photos, tapestries made by the family etc. In other words it is for the protection of a more valuable asset, which has a recognised market value and demand.

My advice is, seek a professional opinion from one who understands and is involved with the Australian art market. A valuer should also be able to give advice as to authenticity!

Cessnock & Kurri KurriCessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast.

Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland.

During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the

last twenty years.

Consequently many areas have undergone a change in character, with rural residential housing development and weekend retreats becoming popular.

The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries.

The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convict-built Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures.

What to see and do in Kurri Kurri■ Kurri Kurri is famous for its murals, which are a wonderful expression of the region’s history. Tours are available all year round. Kurri Kurri is the biggest mural town in Australia. Don’t forget to look for the Kookaburra in every mural – some are quite hard to find. To book a tour contact the VIC on 4936 1909.

■ Richmond Vale Railway Museum runs trains on the first three Sundays of each month from 10am.

■ Kurri Kurri farmer’s market is held the second Saturday of each month.

Steel Seams A collaborative show between two of the Lower Hunter’s most exciting and progressive emerging sculptors and installation artists, Joanna O’Toole and Maggie Hensel-Brown. This exhibition is at the leading edge of contemporary sculptural practice, and features paintings and small works in addition to a major installation within the gallery.

Dheo-Ka From 18th July until 11th August, as part of NAIDOC Week celebrations. Dheo-ka is a stunning exhibition from Aboriginal artists across the Hunter Valley and beyond. Works will include traditional

narratives of the seasons, locations, food chains, customs and ceremonies along with astrological and spiritual themes of the Dreamtime. It will combine this with works examining 21st century social and racial issues. The term Dheo-ka can mean meeting place or coming together, and the

exhibition’s curator, highly respected Wonarrua elder, artist and teacher Les Elvin brings together an amazing group of work from a diverse and talented group of Indigenous artists.

Steel Seams runs 13th June – 14th July, Dheo-Ka runs 18th July – 11th August. Entry to both exhibitions is free.

For the first time ever, Maitland Regional Art Gallery is proud to host ARTEXPRESS and display 35 of these selected works from 2012 Higher School Certificate with 18 of the exhibited artworks created by students from schools in the Hunter-Central Coast Region.

Each ARTEXPRESS exhibition is unique as it reflects the students’ individual explorations of concepts such as culture and personal identity presented in a wide variety of expressive forms.

Open every weekend from March to Nov 30th 10am – 3pm. When you visit Tocal Homestead its not hard to imagine days gone by. Tales of architects and graziers, bushrangers, businessmen, social reform and philanthropy are woven through the highs and lows of life on this unique property.

There is a lot on offer for visitors to the Allyn & Paterson River Valley, just two and a half hours’ drive from Sydney, an hour from Newcastle and where Dr Henry Lindeman planted his first grape

vines in 1843.

Here you will discover the geographically blessed towns of Paterson, Vacy, Gresford and East Gresford, ringed by the ancient Moonabung Ranges and criss-crossed by the pristine waters of the two rivers that flow from the Barrington Tops.

First stop could be historic Tocal Homestead for tales of the olden days of bushrangers, graziers, and other characters who inhabited one of the greatest Australian cattle and horse studs of its time. Have a look at the rare architect-designed barn built around 1867, and the gracious Colonial Georgian country house. Tocal Homestead is a very popular venue for weddings and milestone celebrations.

Paterson has inspired many artists to pick up a brush to try to capture this picturesque Australian country town on canvas. Take the time to look at the many fine old homes, grand

commercial buildings, museums, art gallery, pubs, cafes, parks and shops that contribute to Paterson’s unique style.

9km north of Paterson is Vacy, with rugged Mt George to the west. It is well worth a visit to the café, hotel, arts & crafts shop and general store for a taste of country hospitality, great food and quirky crafts. Travel over the Vacy bridge, circa 1898, to Bunna Bunoo olive grove and gift shop. You can see the roof tops of the cabins and lodges such as Banjos Bushland Retreat and Cabins in the Clouds on Mt George, perfect destinations for weekend getaways or a longer stay.

The small towns of Gresford and East Gresford are the gateway to Lostock Dam, Mt Allyn and the Chichester State Forest to the north. Take the Allyn River Road drive past homesteads set among rolling green hills and granite outcrops.

Visit Clevedon craft shop, Natural Furniture Works, the Beatty Hotel and Camyr Allyn winery. History lovers will enjoy a drive to St Anne’s Anglican Church and suspension bridge, and St Mary’s on Allyn at Allynbrook.

A LETTER HOME…To England, on a Rainy Sunday Morning Time has really gone fast since I arrived in Muswellbrook. The Rugby team I play with are called the “Heelers” after the Australian Cattle Dog known here as “Blue Heelers”. Muswellbrook is only small by English standards with about 12,000 residents but because of the Coal Mining, Racehorse Studs and Vineyards in the area, we have blokes in our team from New Zealand, USA, England, Fiji and Ireland. After yesterday’s win, our

1st Grade side is leading the competition with seven wins from eight games.

My good mate, Poe who enticed me to come to Australia for the Rugby season has taken me on some great adventures in the Upper Hunter area. We went “four-wheel driving” in the Barrington Tops. They are an amazing Mountain Range about 2 hours from Muswellbrook and rise up over 5,000 feet. It is where the mighty Hunter River starts a journey from the mountains winding its way over 400 kilometres to Newcastle where it flows into the Pacific Ocean. It is a World Heritage Wilderness area and because of the height, it can get bitterly cold and lots of snow falls over the winter months. The views are just incredible and the mountains seem to go on for ever.

I saw my first kangaroo on my trip to “The Tops” as the Barringtons are called in Muswellbrook. We were above the clouds but we were able to venture right into the mountains and looked down into some jaw-dropping valleys.

Poe arranged for me to have a flight over the Upper Hunter in light aircraft – we took off from Scone airport and cruised around at 3,000 feet for over an hour. The Hunter Valley is beautiful from the ground but at 3,000 feet, it is just magnificent. It was a little bumpy at first but I had an awesome afternoon in the air. We were able to see where the rivers flow, all the little towns and villages, the giant Open Cut Coal Mines, farm lands and a fantastic circle of rugged National Parks – The Barrington Tops, Towarri, Goulburn River and the huge Wollemi National Park.

I went to Newcastle a couple of weeks ago – there are some great surfing beaches there but I was just happy take in the sights. One day, I might have a go at riding a board.

I have been able to get work at the Ford Motor Dealership. Selling cars, which along with the sighting of the Kangaroos is also a first for me. In my spare time not working or involved with Rugby, the lads have taken me to sample some of the local wines around the Denman area about 20 minutes away.

I was going to play golf today but it’s raining so I’m off to see American classical pianist

I have only a few months before I go home but there are still a few things to accomplish:

Help Muswellbrook Heelers win the Rugby competition; go to Fraser Island on the Barrier Reef; have a couple of weeks in New Zealand and most importantly, see the British & Irish Lions annihilate the Wallabies 3 -0 in the Test series.

Thousands of visitors expected at the Aberdeen Highland GamesThe Aberdeen Highland Games is set to offer yet another exciting programme of events this year when clans, bands, dancers and warriors from near and far gather on Saturday 6 July to celebrate Scottish heritage and tradition in the town of Aberdeen, located in the Upper Hunter Valley of New South Wales.

The annual event attracts thousands of locals and visitors each year with its programme of over 23 events offering a variety of entertainment, games and competitions for the whole family to enjoy.

The magnificent opening ceremony featuring the massed pipe bands and the colour of the many clans represented will leave spectators breathless and in awe. President of the Aberdeen Highland Games Committee, Barrie Lawn, said, “We are very fortunate to be able to present a massed band display of this size and calibre; the equivalent only seen in major cities”.

“As the massed pipe bands begin to play and march down the grounds, the crowd becomes silent and in awe of this great spectacle of colour and sound. It still affects me, even after 13 years,” he said.

The opening ceremony is followed by a lively programme of Scottish music, Highland dancing, traditional Celtic strongman and tug-o-war competitions, novelty games and races for the kids, as well as access to an extensive range of stalls offering delicious food, historical and clan information, as well as Celtic gifts and merchandise.

A traditional Ceilidh in the evening completes the day’s festivities. This is a separate ticketed dinner event and bookings are essential. The Aberdeen Highland Games is a full day of culture and entertainment and offers visitors to the area an opportunity to make a weekend of it by staying one or two nights, or more if desired, in the picturesque Upper Hunter Valley, where there is much to see and plenty of accommodation available.
