AA State Champi ns Congratulations to the Newberry High School varsity boys basketball team for winning the 2014 AA State Basketball Champion-ship. Coaches Chad Cary, Adonis Hill, and Mike Hughes led the team to its state championship last month. The Bulldogs de-feated Lake Marion 77 to 47 at the Colonial Life Are-na on March 8. On their way to the championship, the Bulldogs went unde-feated in region play and won the Upper State

Championship for the third year in the row. The Newberry Bulldogs hold a three-year rec-ord of 44-2 inside the county, and they have won 22 region games in a row. NHS has only missed the playoffs one time under Chad Cary since the 2001-02 basketball season, and they have won region titles in 2005, 2007, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014. Coach Cary says, “This is a great win, not just for our team but for our assistant coaches who work so hard, our principal, our superintendent and for the community.”

Every year Newberry High School sets a school-wide reading goal of 25 books for each student. We hold two special celebrations for stu-dents who meet their goals. The first celebration we held was an Ice Cream Social for students that read a minimum of 13 books before win-ter break. Students enjoyed their choice of vanilla, choco-late, or strawberry ice cream with various toppings and syrups to pile on their dish.

The NHS library will be invit-ing all students that meet their school-wide reading goal of 25 books this school year to an End of the Year Reading Cele-bration. Students will submit their lists to their English teachers, and the celebration will be held in May. The cele-bration will consist of outdoor fun on an obstacle course and wrecking ba l l in f la ta -bles. Thank you for encourag-ing your students to participate in this reading program and to enjoy the many benefits of reading!

Junior Beta Club Students Place at State Convention

Congratulations to the New-berry High School Teacher of the Year, Ms. Jennifer Doyle. Ms. Doyle teaches English in the Freshman Academy and has been with us for three years. She encourages her stu-dents to strive for the best in their academic abilities and challenges them to set high standards. Ms. Doyle success-fully integrates technology, engagement, and rigor into all of her lessons, and she instills a sense of belonging and drive in each of her students. She collaborates with her col-leagues and works hard to give every student in the building a strong foundation for their futures.

NHS Teacher and Support Staff Employee of the Year Also, congratulations to the Newberry High School Sup-port Staff Employee of the Year, Officer Deanna Wil-banks. Officer Willbanks is our resource officer and works for the Newberry County Sherriff’s Office. She works with our students, faculty, and staff to keep Newberry High School a safe place to learn and work. She is respectful and compassionate, and the students in turn respect her and her role in our building. She has been with Newberry High School for a year and will hopefully continue to work here for many more years.

ninth grade Junior Beta Club students who placed third in the Quiz Bowl competition: Nick Rendelman, Tanner Orne, Kaleb Rosemond, and Matthew Pollard!

Service Learning classes are quite different from regular academic classes, but they have the same intense struc-ture for learning. Students learn in many ways as they serve in areas of their partic-ular interests, which often helps them make decisions for their futures. Responsi-bility is placed on the stu-dents to document their ac-tivities, which is a require-

ment for a passing grade. Students have their fifth log of the year due on May 9, and their final portfolios that count as their final ex-am are due on May 28. This class helps students with time management and self-motivation, which will help them become successful in life beyond high school.
