This month marks the end of the season for regular monthly meetings. We start up again in September (hopefully), with another person in the position of President.

You're all aware that the ODFW is pondering staff cuts and fee increases for 2015. They front the reason being less participation by the public in outdoor sports. While undoubtedly true, my opinion is that they haven't done enough to create recreational opportunities.

The ODFW spends about $3 to raise a stocker Rainbow trout to 10”. When they dump almost 200,000 into Hagg Lake alone, you can see that costs gobs of money. Not everyone wants to sit on a dirt lake bank and drown a worm or dough bait. Why not stock streams and make it a little interesting? They use to do it big time, but have shifted towards lakes to protect migrating Salmon and Steelhead fry. They actually stock the south fork, Yamhill river, west of Willamina, for about a mile. You would think “hey great”, but not so fast: All private land, steep banks, little bank access and NO BAIT! What were they thinking? These fish are intended to be harvested, not played with.

Our state government has fairly taken it's share of heat this year, (“Cover Oregon”). You're like me and have opinions as to how resources should be managed, speak up! Get yourself on the ODFW's mailing list. Go to public meetings. Send letters. If we as a public don't get involved, nothing will change.

Who We Are In the fall of 2009 Northwest Fresh Seafood Company began supplying fresh seafood to some of Oregon’s finest restaurants. The vision was simple – to provide chefs with the freshest seafood available. So we built relationships with local fishermen and suppliers to secure the finest and freshest catches every day.

Fresh seafood brought in daily quickly connected with a demand from retail customers and since 2009 we have earned the trust of discerning chefs and a reputation with retail customers as the Northwest’s freshest seafood.

For us “success” is being radically fresh, radically fun and radically generous. These values shape who we are and what we do everyday.

How We Roll Delivering the freshest seafood available means watching markets and communicating with fishermen every day. It means leaving before the sun comes up so that we can hand select our seafood. It means ensuring a fresh today while preserving a fresh tomorrow. Delivering the freshest seafood is a challenge. Another way to determine species of salmon:

East Mooring Basin – Astoria Around April 20.

ODFW estimated 1,420 Sea Lions covering this dock.

Not sure if the Sea Lions are still in huge numbers in

Astoria but probably still there. Haven’t heard

anything else since.

I did see on Facebook that someone has been

shooting Sea Lions down around Astoria. Nothing

more posted on the subject.

There is a new group on Facebook that is growing

and trying to stop any efforts to get the Sea Lions off

the docks. They are also trying to stop the removal

of Sea Lions at Bonneville Dam. I think if it was their

business and customers couldn’t use the docks plus

damage if they happen to fall in your boat, they

would have a whole different out look. I think they

have watched too many Flipper movies.

One of the places to stay in Astoria is giving these

special interest groups discounts to lodge with them.

Some people have posted the names of these places

on Facebook in protest to what is going on.

Salmon Trout Steelheader had an article on what to use for cleaning your boat. October /

November on page 38 right column. Boat interiors and floors can get pretty dirty with

baits, fish blood and snacks. You need to be careful not to use some cleaners that

could get on yourself and then on your baits etc.

The author of this article says he recently found a new favorite cleaner. Found in

the laundry detergent aisle . . . OxyClean Versatile Powder. Really cleans well. Mix

one scoop to a bucket of warm water. Then use a plastic brush to scrub it onto the

floor and interior areas. Let stand for a while the longer the better so it will work on

the stains. Just hose it down and your done. Plus this stuff is biodegradable

Awesome tips and I noticed one that could of helped us land more fish. TJ

comments that the one big Springer was barely hooked and with a some what

loose drag they still got it to the net. A firm drag it would of ripped the hook

out. Another tip using Mack’s Flash Lite Troll for slow trolling prawn spinners.

Also TJ is using Walleye spinner blades that are lighter work really well on a

slow trolling.

Fishermen aim to make hatchery fish better biters

In a lifetime of fishing for winter steelhead on Oregon's Alsea River, Stan Steele has seen it get harder and harder to hook into hatchery-bred fish. Instead, he has found he is more likely to hook the wild variety, whose numbers have declined.

A growing body of evidence is showing that Steele's experience is not some fish story, but the result of natural selection. Wild fish, which generally must be released unharmed, retain the aggression that will land them on the end of a hook better than hatchery fish.

Had this in the Oct 2013 newsletter. This is a great

cleaner and is biodegradable. Doesn’t leave

offensive odors that can get on bait and your

hands leaving odors that fish don’t like.

We had a chance to use this twice to clean our

boat floor. It works really well and leaves it clean.

Leaving it sit for a while before rinsing helps. We

used an old broom to scrub the floor real good.

I had called the dealer I got my boat from and told

to use Comet which is a pretty harsh cleaner.
