Dear Festivalgoer

Welcome to the 19th Newark Beer Festival, increasingly known as “The Friendly Festival”.

We have over 150 real ales from all four corners of the country giving a variety of styles and tastes to suit everybody’s palate, sourced from a growing number of microbreweries with many local ones represented at the festival. There is also a comprehensive range of ciders. These are all complemented by a fantastic array of bands and music throughout the weekend.

Let us not forget the people behind the scenes who make the festival work - the CAMRA festival committee, the fantastic support from CAMRA members who help set up and run the bars, the first aiders who keep a watchful eye on us and countless others who do the little jobs that help make such a difference. But most important are you the customers, who come, year in year out, in your hundreds to support this fantastic local event. So have a cracking time and enjoy your experience in the Real Ale Hub of Newark.

Newark Beer Festival is about more than drinking. A quality pint is usually enjoyed more if it’s accompanied by a foot tapping tune or two and we have that perfect mix this weekend. Our talent scouts spend many nights scouring the land’s hot and sweaty venues in an attempt to find the right mix for washing down the ale and cider. Every year they bring us an entertaining mix of musical merriment.

For those of you who prefer to sample their beers without music in the air, we have designated Friday afternoon as a music-free session. You’ll be able to enjoy your tipple in relative serenity until at least 5pm!

Please note the list and timings may be subject to last minute changes due to circumstances outside our control.

Friday 23rd May 3pm - 3.30pm QUIZBrain teasing time with resident “brainiac” Mark Taylor.

7.30pm - 8pm DAVE SIMPSON TRIOThe Dave Simpson Trio is a Blues/Rock outfit from Sleaford. They have played many Blues festivals and supported some well established artists. The trio consists of: Johnny Simpson on Bass, John Joe Gaskin on Drums and Dave Simpson on Guitar & Vocals. Dave’s heavily influenced guitar playing and sounds come straight from the Jimi Hendrix school of playing, accompanied by the solid rhythm section of Johnny’s cool groove Bass and John Joe’s flawless drumming, they will perform songs by such artists as Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, Joe Bonamassa plus some original stuff too. They make the ideal act to whet your appetite and to open this year’s festival.

8.40pm - 10pm PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF MERCIAWhat’s happened to Rhythm & Blues? It’s been stripped down, souled out, polished and hung out

to dry for the X Factor brigade. R&B is back and that’s where PRoM come in, Shakin’ All Over in the wild blue yonder, doin’ it right. The Republicans are: Nick “Aston” Hall Rhythm Guitar & Vocals, Bobby Cotterill on Bass & Backing Vocals, Reverand Rich Martin on Gob Iron, Jason Kennedy on Lead Guitar & Backing Vocals and Mick Mullen on Drums. The Reverand’s gonna blow his gob iron so hard, you’ll hear it in the Windy City and those Telecasters cut to the quick. Let’s hear it for a different kind of Blues, let’s hear People’s Republic Of Mercia.

4.30pm - 5.30pm GLASS ONIONGlass Onion is a four piece Melodic Rock Band from Sleaford, consisting of Chris Clark on Rhythm Guitar & Vocals, Jon Hill on Bass Guitar & Backing Vocals, Andy Taylor on Lead Guitar, Daryl Hocking on Drums. The band have been writing, recording and performing original songs for around five years, and have developed into a tight and accomplished act. Glass Onion have released two albums and an EP, the latest simply titled “Glass Onion” is particularly regarded as exhibiting fully the bands very considerably artistic and technical abilities in a well mastered and attractive package..

6.30pm - 7.40pm GOVANNENThe award winning Govannen is one of the best Celtic music bands in the UK, blending jigs and reels with traditional & contemporary Irish songs. They are a five piece act: Dan Britton on Guitar, Vocals & Bodhran, Chris Conway on Keyboards, Vocals & Irish Whistles, Neil Rabjohn on Cajon drum, Vocals & Dance Caller, Adele McMahon and/or Roger Wilson on Violin. They have released

several albums and sold 10,000 worldwide. The musicians have worked with members of Jethro Tull, Fairport Convention and Martin Carthy.Govannen play with passion, artistry and an easy going good humour, each in good measure for a night to remember – Time Out.

8.40pm - 10pm THE ACETONESThe Acetones are a six-piece Soul covers band based in the Newark area. All the guys have extensive experience in previous bands and on getting together in early 2011, they soon discovered they all shared a love and passion of Soul and Funk music. In their repertoire you will hear songs from the likes of Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye Luther Vandross. The band consists of: Mike Gray on Vocals, Kristian Akers on Bass, Eddie George on Drums & Backing Vocals, Andy Akers on Guitar & Backing Vocals, Chris Barber on Saxophone & Backing Vocals and Andrew “Migs” Mighall on Trumpet & Backing Vocals. The band are delighted to be playing and should bring the Festival to a rousing finale.

3.00pm - 3.45pm NOT GOOD HONEYNot Good Honey were formed only recently, late 2012. They say they are Disheveled Teenagers Making Noise. Their sound is a eclectic mix of Alternative, Grunge and Psychedelia. Fronted by George Hodgson on Guitar & Vocals, Jake Dobbins on Bass, Adam Dodd on Drums and Harvey Blundell on Synthesiser. They have played a few local gigs, but would like to get out and about to spread the word. This Beer Festival gig should hopefully give them a bit more experience.

This year’s Newark Branch nominated charity is the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance and we will be helping them raise funds at events

throughout the year.The charity provides a rapid response

emergency MD 902 Explorer helicopter 365 days a year and provides a fast, smooth, efficient journey to hospital.

Based at RAF Waddington, the Air Ambulance is fully equipped to attend medical emergencies in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire covering a total of 3,000 square miles.

The crew are airborne within a few minutes of a call coming in and flying at 157mph, can reach the furthest points in either county in less than 17 minutes.

On board Paramedics are trained to give immediate trauma treatment and average journey time from an accident site to the nearest hospital is approximately 8 minutes, well within the “Golden Hour”. They are ready and available to be called on to assist at the scene of an accident, providing medical treatment together with rapid transportation for those who might not otherwise survive their injuries.

Over the last few years they have gradually become accepted as part of an integrated emergency services’ network.

Lincolnshire plays host to a large number of bikers in the summer months making this the busiest season for motorcycle incidents. Often incidents occur in more rural locations which can be up to 45 minutes from the nearest hospital by

land ambulance which is considerably longer than the 8 minutes by air.

Known locally as the Ambucopter the yellow M.D. Explorer is now a familiar sight above the two counties, having responded to in excess of 14,300 calls since operations began in 1994. In 2012, 236 serious road traffic collisions amongst many other incidents were attended.

The Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance is entirely funded by donations and receive no government funding. Attending between 800 and 1000 incidents every year with each incident costing the charity around £2000 to attend. In order to keep the ambucopter flying and saving lives a minimum of £1.7million needs to be raised.

FESTIVALETIQUETTE

Beer festival virgins should take a few moments here to learn about festival etiquette. If you are standing with an empty glass, pick a brew at

random, and then return to this page. Off you go. Now here are some tips to help enjoyyour session.

1. The breweries are listed in alphabetical order, followed by the brewery’s location, the beer strength and then a short tasting note. Remember – some of these brews are so new not even our cellarmen have tasted them, so please be tolerant if the descriptions aren’t 100% accurate.

2. We suggest you start at the lower end of the ABV (alcohol by volume) scale, say around 3.5%, and move steadily towards the heavier beers

at 6 or 7% and beyond. Remember, at this end of the scale you may lose your self-respect, use of your legs, or even your partner!

3. We can’t guarantee that every beer will be available at every session. It is our policy not to serve beer that isn’t ready, and some beers (marked as RES in the list) aren’t likely to be on first. If your choice isn’t available, there may be several reasons: i) We were unable to get the advertised beer – an alternative from that brewery will usually be on offer. ii) The beer is not yet ready to serve – be patient, it may be available a little later. iii) You’re late and it’s already sold out!

4. Don’t forget to eat! Visit our caterers occasionally to help soak up the beer. Or if you just want nibbles, we stock crisps, nuts and locally produced scratchings in the marquee.

PLEASE – don’t drink and drive. Soft drinks are available for drivers and we have timetables and taxi numbers at the information desk.

Angela Johnson

Since the last Beer Festival we have learned of the tragic and untimely loss of Angie Johnson, who along with her husband, Gordon, looked

after the catering with Food to Go, a regular of the festival for the past few years.

Angie’s larger than life character kept us all sustained with coffee and “full English” during the long hours over the festival weekend. Service with a smile is probably an understatement in Angie’s case, as I’m sure many of you who have come to their stall between beers will testify.

A long standing business woman in catering, Angie enjoyed immensely working the beer festival and it’s hard to imagine it without her.

On behalf of all the people involved with CAMRA and in particularly the Newark Beer Festival we pass on our condolences to Gordon and the family.
