America’s Largest On-water Canoe, Kayak and Paddleboard SaleWhat started on a small lakeside beach in 1999, Adirondack Paddlefest has grown to be the largest on-water canoe, kayak and SUP demo and sale in the country. Our location in Old Forge offers a large beach for test paddling, close accommodations and restaurants, ample parking and the largest selection of canoes, kayaks, and SUPs on sale anywhere in the northeast. It also features continuous on-water pad-dling, clinics, demos, lectures, classes, food and fun for the whole family. Factory reps and industry experts will be on hand all weekend to help get you on the water with the right canoe, kayak, SUP and equipment for all your paddling adventures.

More than 1,000 Canoes, Kayaks and SUPs on SaleEvery canoe, kayak and paddleboard will be on sale. Hundreds of models from the leading brands will be displayed. There will be tandem, solo and pack canoes. Whatever style kayak you want will be here: recreational, touring and light-touring, tandem, sit-on-top, whitewater, kids and more. And we’ll have SUPs for every level of paddler, from novice to experienced racers!

Test Paddle Before You BuyAt Paddlefest you will see literally hundreds of Canoes, Kayaks, Stand-Up-Paddle-boards, and Whitewater boats, instead of a few dozen display models. Check our website, www.MountainmanOutdoors.com for the latest additions, updates and news for both Saratoga Paddlefest and Adirondack Paddlefest.

Plan ahead and stay in touch! Read through this guide, check out the website, or better yet, checkout the Paddlefest Event pages at our Facebook page.

Attend at least two days! There is a lot to see and do! And if you are going to test pad-dle, there are a lot of boats to try out. Try to come for at least two days to give yourself time to try out as many canoes, kayaks and SUPs as you like. That way you won’t feel rushed at the end of the day when it’s time to make a purchase decision.

Be prepared! The Boy Scouts were right, it’s best to be prepared. Upstate New York is known for its fickle weather, so bring some rain gear. Are you going to test paddle? Bring the right clothing for paddling and some dry clothes to change into once you are finished. And, just in case, bring along some sunblock!

Planning on buying a boat? Great! But don’t forget the accessories (paddles, life jack-ets, etc.) and roof racks for your vehicle. If you know you are going to be buying a boat and will need a rack system, make sure you plan some time to talk to the rack vendors. There’s lots of options to consider. And you will need to plan time for us to install the rack for you. Now is the time to buy, as all accessories are 15% off the entire weekend!

Used Boat Trade-in and Auction: Ready to trade in your old canoe, kayak or SUP? Bring it with you and let us auction it off during our Used Boat Auction! You can take the pro-ceeds in cash or use it towards credit to purchase a new one during Paddlefest. (See page 19 for details.)

How to Get the Most Out Of PaddlefestWelcome to our 18th Annual Paddlefest Show! We would like to offer you a few tips to make the best of your time during the show.

Test Paddle Before You Buy!

Page 10: New York Paddlefest & Outdoor Expo 1016

When you climb onto a paddleboard or put in for a day on

the water; it’s imperative to wear a life jacket, otherwise

known as a personal flotation device (PFD) or life vest, that

is approved for the activity and the type of water you’ll be in.

A Good Starting PointPFDs come in all shapes and sizes. How do you make any

sense of all the models that are available? The easiest

starting point will be identifying your paddling style. Paddling

styles are roughly divided into three categories: Recreational,

Touring, Whitewater, and SUP. Additionally there are many

PFDs designed specifically for children or activities such as

fishing, or rescue applications.

Recreational PFDsRecreational PFDs are made for the entry level paddler, but

can be used for more advanced boating applications as well.

Many recreational canoes & kayaks have high-back seats;

which is why many recreational PFDs offer mesh or thinner

back panels. These PFDs help to elevate interference issues

with higher seat backs.

Touring & Sea Kayaking PFDsTouring PFDs feature lots of pockets for storage, even ones

specially designed to hold VHF radios. Reflective elements

help to enhance visibility, while lash tabs are designed to hold

a knife or a safety strobe. Some Touring PFDs will accept a

tow harness for helping assist other paddlers during longer

excursions.

Whitewater PFDsWhitewater PFDs may offer less storage, but allow unhindered

movement, and most are designed to be as low-profile as

possible. They are very durable and designed to take the

abuses of high-volume, fast moving rivers. Some may be

rescue compatible (Type-V). Rescue PFDs are intended for

advanced paddlers or guides who may need to aid in strong-

swimmer rescue techniques in moving water.

SUP PFDsSUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding) PFDs can be broken down

into two groups, Inflatable PFDs and Inherently Buoyant

(foam) PFDs. Inflatable PFDs are typically not advised for

weaker swimmers, but offer less coverage and greater

comfort. Whereas, Inherently Buoyant PFDs designed for

SUP provide higher mobility and a smaller footprint. These

PFDs are recommended for weak swimmers or while SUPing

in moving waters.

Sizing and FittingChest size, not weight, is used to determine PFD sizing for

adults. (Infant, Child, and Youth PFD sizes are based on

weight.) A PFD should fit snug, yet allow you to move freely

and not constrict breathing. For the best feel and fit, try on

PFDs while wearing clothes similar to what you paddle in.

How to Choose a PFD

Testing the Fit • ChosethecorrectsizePFDbasedonyourchestsize

• Loosenallthestrapsfirst,thenputthePFDon

• Buckle/zip it up & tighten all the straps. It should feel

snug but not uncomfortable.

• PulluponthePFDshoulderstraps. If itmovesuppast

your nose, find a new one.

• Ifpossible,giveitatestruninapoolorinshallow,calm

Paddlefest On-water ClassesOffering a schedule of both Kids and Adult Kayak Clinics

Sponsored by Mountainman Outdoor Supply Company, WeKanu, and volunteer Paddlesport Instructors certified through the American Canoe Association (ACA)

Kids Kayak Clinics ($20)In these introductory clinics, children will be introduced to the safety and paddling basics: life jackets, getting in and out of a kayak, going forward, backward and easy turns. Then it’s on to the games where learning becomes fun as they will have races, tug of war and obstacle courses.

Classes are limited to 6 children and there will be at least two instructors per session to ensure both safety and a high level of attention. We do ask that if your child is participat-ing in one of these sessions that you have a dry change of clothes readily available as kids tend to find ways to get wet when they are having fun.

Adults: Novice Paddler Clinic ($20)Foundational skills for the beginner to help you start out right. This session is designed to give the new kayaker ex-posure to some basic skills and concepts that will help build a strong foundation. We use simple language, examples and experiential techniques to get you on the water and on the right path.

Adults Advanced Paddling Technique Clinic ($20)This session is designed to help competent kayak paddlers jump start their season through learning and practicing some great training drills and techniques. We will focus on the integration of Body, Boat and Blade for more effective boat control, effortless maneuvers and efficient travel.
