Page 4: New York City - Lonely Planetmedia.lonelyplanet.com/shop/pdfs/new-york-city--9...seeking the best brands in the world. Wan-der over to Chinatown, which feels worlds away from mainstream

Day TwoUpper East Side (p210)

M Start at the staggering Metro-politan Museum of Art. Wander

through the Egyptian and Roman collec-tions, take in European masters, then head up to the rooftop (in summer) for a view over Central Park. Visit the nearby Neue Galerie for a feast of German and Austrian art in a 1914 mansion.

SoHo & Chinatown (p82)

R Head down to SoHo for an afternoon of shopping amid crowds of tourists

seeking the best brands in the world. Wan-der over to Chinatown, which feels worlds away from mainstream consumerism, but is – in reality – only a few blocks over. Stroll by the neighborhood’s Buddhist temples, stopping for snacks like custard tarts and almond ice cream.

Upper West Side & Central Park (p228)

N If you have concert tickets, then skip dinner downtown and hit up Barci-

bo Enoteca for a preshow glass of expertly curated Italian wine. Then it’s off to the Lincoln Center for opera at the Metropol-itan Opera House or a symphony in Avery Fisher Hall. Afterwards, dine at Burke & Wills for modern Australian cuisine, fol-lowed by drinks upstairs at the Manhattan Cricket Club.

Day OneUpper West Side & Central Park (p228)

M Spend the morning exploring the won-ders of Central Park, taking in the

fortresslike walls of skyscrapers surrounding the green. Start at Columbus Circle, then head northeast, passing the Central Park Zoo, the Bethesda Fountain, the Conserv-atory Water and Strawberry Fields on the west side. If you have the kids in tow, check out the dinosaur skeletons at the American Museum of Natural History then hit up the Loeb Boathouse to rent rowboats for a paddle around the lake.

Midtown (p174)

R After a morning exploring the green, it’s time to uncover some of the city’s

architectural wonders, like Grand Central Terminal, the Chrysler Building, the New York Public Library and Rockefel-ler Center. Round off the afternoon with a visit to the city’s museum darling: Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).

Midtown (p174)

N Spend the evening under the starry lights of Broadway, checking out a

blockbuster show or something distinctly ahead of the curve at Playwrights Horizon or Signature Theatre. Soak up the Las Ve-gas–like atmosphere of Times Square from the TKTS Booth, swig cocktails at Rum House, then climb to the top of the Empire State Building to wish the city ‘goodnight’.

Top Itineraries

Dinner Savor soup dumplings at Joe’s Shanghai (p93), a Chinatown staple.

Lunch Lunch on Austrian specialties at elegant Cafe Sabarsky (p224).

Dinner For Broadway-goers, do an early dinner at Marseille (p200).

Lunch Pick up supplies at Zabar’s (p235) for a picnic in Central Park.

Day FourLower Manhattan & the Financial District (p60)

M Catch the Staten Island Ferry in the early morning and watch the

sun come up over Lower Manhattan’s sky-scrapers. Then visit the moving National September 11 Memorial before honoring some of New York’s greatest luminaries buried in the cemetery at Trinity Church.

East Village & Lower East Side (p104)

R Wander through the Lower East Side, doing a bit of window-

shopping and gallery-hopping. Then visit the Lower East Side Tenement Museum for insight into the city’s fascinating immi-gration history. Afterwards, walk up to the East Village for a wander along St Mark’s Place and nearby 9th St.

Greenwich Village, Chelsea & the Meatpacking District (p129)

N Stroll the lovely, meandering streets of Greenwich Village. Delve into the

its soul-filed roots for an evening of live jazz at Blue Note, Smalls or the Village Vanguard. Afterwards, slip behind the inconspicuous brown door to swig bathtub gin cocktails amid Prohibition-era-style surrounds at Little Branch, then head

Day ThreeBrooklyn (p263)

M Catch the East River Ferry over to Dumbo, and admire the magnifi-

cent view of Manhattan from the lush new Brooklyn Bridge Park. Afterwards stroll through the cobblestone streets of Dumbo, browsing bookstores, boutiques and cafes. Don’t miss the vintage Jane’s Carousel and more great views from the Empire Fulton Ferry.

Brooklyn (p263)

R Travel up to the Brooklyn Muse-um for a look at fascinating works

from Africa, the Americas and Ancient Egypt, plus excellent temporary shows. Afterwards take a stroll in Prospect Park,

pausing for refreshments at the scenic new Lakeside complex.

Brooklyn (p263)

N Jump in a ‘Boro Taxi’ up to Wil-liamsburg, on the north side of the

borough, for oysters and bespoke cocktails at Maison Premiere. Head up to rooftop bar, the Ides for a fabulous view over the city. End the night across the street at the Brooklyn Bowl, with a side of bowling and some groovy musical acts.

Dinner Dine on rich seafood plates at iconic Jeffrey’s Grocery (p140).

Lunch Find your way into the alley for creative cooking at Freemans (p118).

Dinner Partake of Brooklyn’s culinary renaissance by dining at Rye (p281).

Lunch Fill up on good-value lunch specials at atmospheric AlMar (p283).

Our Writers

Our StoryA beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies. Lonely Planet was born.

Today, Lonely Planet has offices in Franklin, London, Melbourne, Oakland, Beijing and Delhi, with more than 600 staff and writers. We share Tony’s belief that ‘a great guidebook should do three things: inform, educate and amuse’.
