KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Hamidreza Norouzi Professor, Construction Management and Civil Engineering Technology

Dr. Hamid Norouzi is a professor in the Department of Construction Management and Civil Engineering Technology at New York City College of Technology. He also holds a joint appointment at the CUNY-Graduate Center in the department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) as doctoral faculty. Prof. Norouzi completed his PhD in Civil Engineering (Water Resources, remote sensing) at the CUNY- Graduate Center. His research interests lie in the area of using Geographic Information System (GIS), satellite remote sensing data as well as ground measurements in various geoscience and earth system sciences. It includes using satellite information in climate studies, urban heat islands, studying lakes, hydrology, and water resources.

Dr. Norouzi’s research is under the Center for Remote Sensing of Earth System Sciences (ReSESS) at City Tech where he has mentored/co-mentored more than 80 undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral researchers at CUNY and other institutions. He has published numerous papers in various peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and international and national conferences. Prof. Norouzi has been awarded several research grants from the Department of Defense (DoD), Army Research Offce (ARO), National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Science Foundation (NSF), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and CUNY.

In addition to his scholarly work, Dr. Norouzi serves as the Director of Undergraduate Research at City Tech where he oversees the Emerging Scholars Program (ESP) and the CUNY Research Scholars Program (CRSP) and co-coordinates the NSF Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program.

He is a registered Professional Engineer (PE), a member of NASA Land Surface Working Group (LSWG) of Global Precipitation Mission, and an active member of the Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network (GLEON) association. Dr. Norouzi is a scientist/mentor of the NASA GISS Climate Change Research Initiative (CCRI) and was selected as the City Tech Scholar-On-Campus in 2020.

Youshmanie Sukraj ’21 Bachelor of Science Applied Chemistry

Twenty years ago, Youshmanie and her family left their home in Guyana to pursue the American dream. Settling into a small apartment in Ozone Park, Youshmanie saw her mother work tirelessly, day after day, to support their family. Her mother’s work ethic taught Youshmanie from a young age that hard work and dedication are the key components to success.

While recognizing the privileges of living in the United States, Youshmanie also experienced the extreme diffculties that come with living here as an immigrant. Experiencing such hardship heightened her empathy and inspired her to pursue a career through which she could help others.

While applying to City Tech, Youshmanie worried that her dream of being the frst in her family to attend college might not come true. She encountered many barriers to receiving fnancial aid, and was ineligible for student loans and most other forms of assistance. Nonetheless, after persevering and continuing to search for opportunities, she was fnally granted a full scholarship to attend college.

Once she began her studies, Youshmanie quickly realized that she was unprepared for such a major transition, possessing no study techniques or time management skills. As a result, she struggled early on with her science courses and began to question her abilities. She often debated whether she was ft for a career in healthcare as she struggled with the added responsibility of taking care of her younger brother. Despite it all, Youshmanie refused to allow her diffcult circumstances to defne her or prevent her from achieving her goals. Strong-willed as ever, she learned new ways to study, became employed as a clinical assistant, started volunteering at her local hospital and participated in various research projects. Youshmanie persevered and managed to complete her last two years of college with straight As.

Through her professional and academic experiences, Youshmanie discovered a love for dentistry that continues to inspire her each day. She plans on continuing her academic career by applying to dental school later this year and hopes to someday open a multi-specialty practice that caters to underserved communities both in the United States and her native country of Guyana.

Youshmanie proudly proclaims that her hardest days did not defeat her, but rather empowered her to persevere. She wishes the same for the graduating class of 2021 and hopes that the power of resilience permeates their lives.

SALUTATORIAN

Xiaona Zhou ’21 Bachelor of Science Applied Mathematics

Xiaona Zhou is the salutatorian of the class of 2020-2021. She is graduating with a bachelor of science degree in Applied Mathematics.

Xiaona grew up in a small village in Fujian, China. She speaks of a diffcult childhood, which led to severe depression as a teenager. She attended high school there until she decided to move to the United States all by herself.

She arrived in New York City, where she started working at restaurants, but quickly realized she could do better and decided to pursue a college education.

Working over 12 hours a day, six days a week as a waitress while preparing to pass the GED exam was not easy. Xiaona used every free moment to study, flling her books with Chinese translations. The studying continued for months, but she fnally earned her GED on her second try.

At frst, Xiaona struggled tremendously in all of her classes. Her textbooks were twice as thick as others’ because of all the added sticky notes. Eventually, all of her hard work paid off and by the end of her freshman year, Xiaona was earning straight As.

Unfortunately, Xiaona did not enjoy the marketing major she had chosen. She experienced much self-doubt until she met professor Boyan Kostadinov, who saw her potential in the feld of mathematics. Upon his advice, she quickly changed her major to Applied Mathematics.

Since then, Xiaona has completed eight research projects, even presenting at several conferences. In fact, one of the most recent projects she worked on was published in STAR Protocols by Cell Press Elsevier, a top-ranked publisher in the US.

Xiaona has interned as a budget analyst at the Offce of the Brooklyn Borough President and was selected as one of eight students to participate in the MS Data Science Summer School taught by Microsoft researchers. She also developed a healthcare tax calculating app, which thousands have already used. She is the president of the student chapter of the Society for Industrial and Applied Math at City Tech and has been helping fellow students with math coursework as a tutor for years.

Xiaona is currently applying to a master’s program in Data Science. Motivated by her diffcult childhood, she hopes to someday use data science and machine learning to help provide a better environment for children around the world. She hopes her story will inspire others to realize their power to change their own future. Once you take that frst step towards building a better life, Xiaona confdes, you will fnd many people willing to help you along the way.

The Honorable Hakeem Jeffries Member of Congress, New York 8th District

Hakeem Jeffries represents the diverse Eighth Congressional District of New York, an area that encompasses large parts of Brooklyn and a section of Queens. Serving his ffth term in the United States Congress, Rep. Jeffries is a member of the House Judiciary Committee and House Budget Committee.

Rep. Jeffries is Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus. He is the ffth highest-ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives. He is also the former Whip of the Congressional Black Caucus and previously co-chaired the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee where he helped develop the For The People agenda.

In Congress, Rep. Jeffries is a tireless advocate for social and economic justice. He has worked hard to help residents impacted by the devastation of the COVID-19 pandemic, reform our criminal justice system, improve the economy for everyday Americans and protect our health care from right-wing attacks. He has been a strong advocate for the “George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.”

In January 2020, Rep. Jeffries was selected by Speaker Nancy Pelosi to serve as one of seven House Impeachment Managers in the Senate trial of President Donald Trump, becoming the frst African American man to serve in that role.

Rep. Jeffries has played a major role in shaping the Congressional response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He has fought hard to assist state and local governments whose budgets have been devastated by the virus, pushed for an extension of the emergency unemployment beneft and supported efforts to keep everyday Americans in their homes. In the community, Rep. Jeffries continues to personally distribute food, masks, gloves and hand sanitizer to residents in need.

Rep. Jeffries previously served for six years in the New York State Assembly, where he authored laws to protect the civil liberties of law-abiding New Yorkers during police encounters, encourage the transformation of vacant luxury condominiums into affordable homes for working families and improve the quality of justice in the civil court system.

Congressman Jeffries obtained his bachelor’s degree in political science from SUNY Binghamton, where he graduated with honors. He received his master’s degree in public policy from Georgetown University. Thereafter, Rep. Jeffries attended New York University School of Law, where he graduated magna cum laude and served on Law Review.

After completing law school, Rep. Jeffries clerked for the Honorable Harold Baer Jr. of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. He then practiced law for several years at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP

Rep. Jeffries was born in Brooklyn Hospital, raised in Crown Heights and is a product of New York City’s public school system, including Midwood High School. He lives in Prospect Heights with his family.
