THE CITY OF NEW YORK

New York City is one of the biggest cities in the

world whit population of 8 244 910 people.

New York is located about 1 214 40 km². The

city has 5 areas: Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan,

Queens and Staten Island. The majority of New

York is located on an archipelago of islands on

the East Coast of North America, the largest of

them are Manhattan, Staten Island and Long

Island.

HISTORY

The first documented visit by a European was in

1524 by Giovanni da Verrazzano. European

settlement in the region began with the founding in

1614 of the Netherlands colony of fur trade in the

southern part of Manhattan, which was later called

New Amsterdam.

In 1664 New Amsterdam was occupied by England

and given its present name in honor of the Duke of

York. During British rule the importance of New York
