*New York had two advantages in the 19th century
1. The location of it’s port
2.Growing capital markets.
* New york’s leaders believed they could transform these islands to become the economic capital of the U.S. One example is the creation of the Erie Canal. It made New York in charge of all U.S. exports to Europe.*After the industrial revolution, motion pictures and television were invented. Manhattan became headquarters for many important TV networks.
The Beginning of New York(The Country & the city)
In 1609 a sailor named Hudson set rout to find a new passage, instead he found a big harbor.
Native Americans were living there
Many Dutchmen settled there and believed the islands would lead to great fortune.
At first no one wanted to go to New York
Granted freedom to practice different religions, first place to establish separation of church and state in America.
The Colonization of New York(The Country & the City)
Was first populated by the Dutch. They called it “New Amsterdam.” Many English warships appeared on the harbor and the citizens did not want to fight so the general was overthrown and New York was now under British rule.
New Amsterdam was changed to “New York.”
The number of sailboats leaving NY to export goods increased from 35 a year to over 700
French joined forces with America to take over NY.
The Erie Canal(The Country & The city)
Dewitt Clinton believed it would make New York the most commercial city in the U.S.
He promised the bankers that they would make money off of this canal and they lent him the money to fund it.
It was a waterway connecting the Hudson river/Albany with the Great lakes/Buffalo.
It took 7 years to build, but they built it on schedule.
Partially opened before it was completed.
Becomes a great trading route, eliminates costs/time to export and import.
Immigrants migrate and New York grows.
Immigrants & Cities
In 1870-1920’s the United States transformed from a society based on Agriculture to an urban society.
Millions of Immigrants came to the U.S. and accounted for most of the population.
America was distinctively recognized by the different influences the foreigners brought.
The Great Transatlantic Migrations
1870-1914 was known as “the great transatlantic migration.” Over 23 million foreigners came to America due to economic opportunities.
Argentina had 5 ½ million foreigners migrate, and Canada had 4 ½. The U.S. had a lot of available land and room for newcomers so the numbers of immigrants didn’t create a big disturbance.
People migrated in “chains.” After hearing of people’s success.
The City in the Land of the Dollar
The United States is very unique compared to many of the other nations in the world.
The cities in the U.S. are influenced by the rapid growth that took place here. It is influenced greatly by businesses in comparison to France where it is influenced by government.
Our office buildings are set apart from residential areas.
France has buildings that are all of the same color. They also have beautiful monumental structures.
The Brooklyn Bridge(Sunshine & Shadow)
Started in 1869, finished in 1883.
Created to connect New York to Brooklyn. Brooklyn had a lot of room for expansion, it was intended for people to migrate over there.
It was built over the East river.
Built by John Augustus Roebling and his son Washington.
1,600 Ft. long with towers over 275 ft tall.
Steel cables were used.
Opening day was may 24th, 1883… known as “the people’s day.”
Boss William M Tweed(Sunshine & Shadow)
• Known as a corrupt politician
• Part of Tammany hall which helped the poor get out of financial trouble.
• Boss Tweed was 6 feet tall and 300 pounds.
• He stole over 50 million dollars from NY.
• Was in charge of the funding for many projects and took big portions of the money.
• People started noticing that funding prices for certain buildings he was in charge of kept going up.
• Many political cartoons attacked him.
• Died of pneumonia
The Great Depression(Sunshine & Shadow)
• New York was one of the hardest hit cities during the great depression in the 1930’s.
• Factory owners had to lay off their workers, people were not taking in any income.
• The Homeless population grew greatly
• Protests against the city broke out
• Fiorello La Guardia was elected mayor in 1933 and helped New York get back on it’s feet.
• Recovered economically in 1945
