New Year! New Resources!
Resource Center January, 2012
Get It! By Heifer International
Heifer International’s flexible GET IT! curriculum for middle school teachers, GET IT!,
includes a standards-based academic unit that can be integrated—in whole or in part—into
lesson plans. The program engages middle school students as investigative journalists to
research, write about and act on issues surrounding consumer choices and international
trade.
GET IT! is an optimal curriculum for team teaching, with the units categorized by instructor
discipline, though one teacher can also cover all the material. The lesson plans and activities
emphasize reading comprehension, audience-based writing, high-level thinking and research
strategies. The units feature the international trade of flowers, coffee and bananas, common
products that people in the United States buy from Latin America.
The lesson plans go hand in hand with Chores for Change, a service-learning program that
teaches students about hunger and what they can do to make a difference in their own
communities, as well as around the world.
Visit the Resource Center to preview the curriculum or go to Heifer International's website
to find out more.
The third volume in the exciting new Interpretation series offers a comprehensive look at the
theology of sacraments. For many church people, worship is about preaching and music. Baptism
and the Lord’s Supper are occasional additions to Sunday services. Recognizing that church-goers
are uncertain about the need for sacraments, Ronald Byars describes the possibility that the very
doing of worship- the actions observed, the postures assumed, the sound and sight of water, the smell
and taste of bread and wine – will subtly alter the temper of the heart and the mind. If we encounter
the sacraments honestly, they lead us to the very heart of the gospel.

In addition to being one of the world’s leading
interpreters of the Old Testament, Walter Brueggemann
is a skilled and beloved preacher. This collection of
sermons demonstrates Brueggemann’s fidelity to
biblical texts, which come alive with meaning in our
contemporary world. Throughout, Brueggemann
reflects on his preaching. As Samuel Wells writes in
his foreward, “Enjoy this volume from a master
exegete, a master theologian, and a master preacher.
They really are neat sermons. And they’re for you.”
Walter Brueggemann is Professor Emeritus of Old
Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary in
Decatur, Georgia. He is the author of numerous books,
including Introduction to the Old Testament, The
Canon and Christian Imagination, Madate to
Difference: An Invitation to the Contemporary Church
and Great Prayers of the Old Testament, all published
by Westminster John Knox Press.

GENESIS By: Miguel A. De La Torre
This volume in the Belief series provides a new
and interesting theological interpretation of
Genesis through the themes of liberation and the
concerns of the poor and marginalized. De La
Torre remembers Jacob’s wrestling at Peniel
(Gen. 32:24-32), and finds that “there are
consequences when we truly wrestle with the
biblical text, struggling to see the face of God.”
This commentary provides theological and
ethical insights that enables the book of Genesis
to speak powerfully today.
HEBREWS
By D. Stephen Long
The book of Hebrews is a fascinating extended sermon which has
nurtured and challenged the church for centuries. It stands in
tension with our sensibilities but provides guidance for the church’s
life and for individual Christians. In this theological commentary,
D. Stephen Long explores this captivating book. He finds Hebrews
extremely relevant for today since it integrates doctrine, ethics, and
politics while helping faithful Christians find their ways through
troubled times. It invites us into a robust world beyond the
assumptions of today’s scientific worldviews. Hebrews also helps
us understand how to read Scripture after the triumph of Jesus
Christ. Long’s expert theological guidance helps us understand
Hebrews and hear it message for our contemporary world.

Revelation for Everyone
By N.T. Wright
In this final installment of the New Testament for Everyone series, Tom
Wright explores the book of Revelation. With clear, accessible
language, Wright offers us an entrance into the final book of the New
Testament. While the book of Revelation has often been written off as a
foretelling of doom, it is much more complex than this and has captured
imaginations of both lay and professional readers.
1 & 2 Kings for
Everyone

The seventh volume in the popular Old
Testament for Everyone series tells the story of
Israel when it was a monarchy, from the
accession of Solomon to the exile. John
Goldingay, an internationally respected Old
Testament scholar, authors this ambitious Old
Testament for Everyone series. Perfect for
daily devotions, Sunday school preparation, or
