The world is changing fast. Will technology trade barriers rise? Will relations among Europe, the US, China, Russia and other powers be upended? Will research priorities change – for climate, energy, health, defence? All of these questions will force new strategies for companies, universities and governments around the world.

The annual Science|Business Network conference focuses on how international relations in science, technology and trade could be transformed – and how these changes will, in turn, affect the EU’s next flagship R&D effort, Framework Programme 9.

He is responsible for leading the definition, implementation and investment of EU research and innovation policies and programmes across the bioeconomy- from agriculture and food systems, to maritime issues and investment in sustainable bio-based industries. This includes Horizon 2020, Societal Challenge 2 (worth €3.8 billion), the EU Bioeconomy Strategy, and FOOD2030- a joint undertaking amongst bio-based industries to promote food and nutrition security (worth €3.7 billion). He has been responsible for designing and building hundreds of high-performance computing (HPC) systems for commercial enterprises as well as research and defence sectors all around the world. Bouffler previously lead the HPC organisation in Asia for a hardware maker but joined Amazon in 2014 to accelerate the adoption of cloud computing in the scientific community globally. He is also the author of the “Researcher’s Handbook – the missing manual for research in AWS”.

G U N N A R B R I N K PROJECT LEAD OF A SHELL OCEAN DISCOVERY XPRIZE TEAM, FRAUNHOFER IOSBAfter studies in physics and a dissertation in biophysics at the Technical University in Munich, Gunnar Brink worked as manager in biotech start-ups in the Munich area. Since 2013 he became the head of strategy and innovation management at the largest Fraunhofer Institute IOSB in Karlsruhe for computer science and autonomous mobile robotics. Since 2007 he had coordinated the Fraunhofer deep sea robot projects TieTek and DEDAVE. In 2015 he became the project leader of one of only four remaining European teams that have managed to make it into the international competition Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE semifinals. This team develops swarms of autonomous underwater and autonomous surface robots.

In 2004, he was appointed chairman of the Danish Energy Regulatory Authority and has since served as chairman or member of the board of several SMEs. Since 2016, he has been vice-chairman of the EU Commission H2020 Risk Financing Advisory Group, and member of the H2020 Advisory Group for International Cooperation. He is also the author of: “How to Attract Investors, a personal guide to understanding their mindset and requirements”, and has conducted over 175 How to Attract Investors and Horizon 2020 SME Instrument Master Classes throughout Europe.

In 2008, he was part of the Commission’s now-defunct Bureau of European Policy Advisers as an adviser on innovation policy. PAT R I C K C H I L DDEPUTY DIRECTOR-GENERAL, DG RESEARCH AND INNOVATION, EUROPEAN COMMISSIONWith a background in the UK Finance Ministry, Patrick Child joined the European Commission in 1994, where he started in the Economic and Monetary Affairs Directorate General before becoming Commission press spokesman for the economic and monetary union from 1995 to 2004. In 2011, Child became the managing director of the European External Action Service with responsibility for administration and finance, covering human resources policy, security and budget. In April 2016, he took up his current post as deputy director general in DG Research and Innovation. He is responsible for management and implementation of the EU’s €77 billion research and innovation programme, executive agencies and other implementing bodies.

J E A N C H A M B A Z PRESIDENT, PIERRE AND MARIE CURIE UNIVERSITYJean Chambaz was elected to his second term as president in March 2016, having held the office since March 2012. After heading the Physiology and Pathophysiology Doctoral School from 2001 to 2005, Chambaz founded the Doctoral Education Institute at UPMC where he was director until until 2008. His involvement in structuring European research and the debate on new doctoral missions led to his becoming the first president of the Council for Doctoral Education at the European University Association (EUA) from 2008 to 2011. Since 2014 he has been the president of Coordination of French Research-Intensive Universities (CURIF) and continues to teach at UPMC as a professor of cell biology.

M O N I C A D I E T L SENIOR ADVISOR, SCIENCE|BUSINESSMonica Dietl is a neurobiologist, with a solid triple competence in research, European science policy and management (including change management). She conducted research at the University Pierre and Marie Curie in Paris (UPMC), the University of Vienna, Sandoz in Basel, and Collège de France with Rhone Poulenc Santé in Paris, before moving into the research management and science policy world. In that capacity, she was director of the Brussels office of France’s CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique), has served in the European Commission DG Research as Senior Policy Officer and was director of COST (European Cooperation for Science and Technology). She is expert at developing good industry/research collaborations in many fields, including life sciences. Since June 2017 Monica Dietl is Senior Advisor at Science Business to the Healthy Measures initiative.

E R I C D R O S I NDIRECTOR OF STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT & COMMUNICATIONS, SCIENCE|BUSINESS Eric Drosin is a connection and conversation leader, with over 20 years of experience in media, communications, advocacy and European public affairs. Drosin leveraged his experience at The Wall Street Journal Europe and Dow Jones Newswires to create and establish Toyota’s corporate identity and environmental positioning (automotive hybrid technology) across Europe. Drosin entered the field of health as director of communications for Royal DSM’s nutrition activities, helping launch the One Goal campaign (tackling malnutrition in Asia through the platform of football) with World Vision and the Asian Football Federation. Drosin is a specialist in all online and offline communications channels, having won awards for his work in both fields.

J I L L D U G G A NDIRECTOR OF POLICY, CAMBRIDGE INSTITUTE FOR SUSTAINABILITY LEADERSHIP Jill Duggan has been a senior associate of CISL for two years and brings with her extensive experience of international climate and energy policy from both government and industry perspectives. Duggan is also director of The Prince of Wales’s Corporate Leaders Group (CLG). She has been deeply involved in the development of climate policy in the UK and Europe as well as working extensively in the United States and Canada. She was previously director of policy for Doosan Babcock before running her own consultancy, Carbon Policy Associates.

A B D E L H A M I D E L-Z O H E I RYPRESIDENT, EURO-MEDITERRANEAN UNIVERSITY (EMUNI)After graduating from the medical school at Cairo University in 1985, Abdelhamid El-Zoheiry, was appointed to the Department of Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery and became a full professor in 2004. From 2006 to 2014, he served as senior policy advisor to the Minister and the executive director of the research programmes at the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education. He also co-chaired several international policy committees and councils, including the Euro-Mediterranean Group of Senior Officials for Research and Innovation and the African Ministerial Council on Science and Technology. In 2012, he became the founding president of Heliopolis University in Cairo and in February 2014, he was appointed president of the Euro-Mediterranean University of Slovenia.

M A RY L I N E F I A S C H IMANAGING DIRECTOR, SCIENCE|BUSINESSMaryline Fiaschi combines experiences in media and European affairs. After six years managing EU education programmes with the European Commission, Fiaschi entered the media business in 2007 in Shanghai. She held business development positions at the Shanghai Daily and, back in Brussels, at EU affairs media company EurActiv before joining Science|Business in 2011. Today she is also an external evaluator for several EU education and R&I programmes. She holds degrees from Université La Sorbonne, Università di Bologna and Université catholique de Louvain.

A M L E TO G A B E L LO N E PROGRAMME MANAGER, CENTRE FOR MARITIME RESEARCH AND EXPERIMENTATION, NATO SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY ORGANISATIONAmleto Gabellone was awarded a masters degree in electro-mechanical engineering in 1989 and and a postgraduate master in underwater acoustics in 1993, both from the University of Pisa. Prior to his current appointment at the Centre of Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) of the NATO Science and Technology Organization (STO), he joined EUNAVFOR MED Operation Sophia as senior officer team member and logistics expert for the capacity building of Libyan Navy/Coast Guard. From 2014 to 2016, he worked at the Italian Defence Joint Centre of Studies for Military Applications as director’s advisor and quality manager, and from 2012 to 2014 as head of CIS systems at the Navy CIS Centre in Rome.

E D I T H E R C Z O GMANAGING DIRECTOR, VISION & VALUES SPRL; COUNCIL MEMBER, RESEARCH DATA ALLIANCEEdit Herczog is the owner and managing director of Vision & Values which specializes in strategic marketing. Before funding the company, Herczog served a decade in the European Parliament as an MEP elected in Hungary. She was the vice president for the Socialists & Democrats group, responsible for oversight of internal operations. Herczog was also a rapporteur for legislation in the field of industry, technology and research. She was rapporteur for Horizon 2020 budget- the only budget line with no cut. She was also elected to the Council of Research Data Alliance (RDA) and is one of three Europeans on the board.

As managing editor of The Wall Street Journal Europe from 1997 to 2003, he helped lead a redesign of the title in 2000. He co-founded Science|Business in 2004. He is also co-author of book with Yale/IBM “fractal” mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot: “The (mis)Behavior of Markets: A fractal view of risk, ruin & reward”: Basic Books 2004. He is a graduate of Harvard, and a former Knight Fellow at MIT.

B O B J O N E SCOORDINATOR, HELIX NEBULA, CERNBob Jones is a senior member of the scientific staff at CERN and a leader of the Helix Nebula initiative, a public-private partnership to explore the use of commercial cloud services for big data science applications. He is the coordinator for the HNSciCloud Horizon 2020 Pre-Commercial Procurement project, encouraging innovative cloud services to establish a cloud platform for the European research community. Jones was previously the head of the CERN openlab project, which accelerates the development of cutting-edge solutions used by the worldwide Large Hadron Collider (LHC) community.

C A N D AC E J O H N S O NPRESIDENT, EUROPEAN BUSINESS ANGELS NETWORK (EBAN) Candace Johnson is co-initiator of SES/ASTRA and SES Global, the world’s preeminent satellite group. She is also founding president of Europe Online Investments S.A., the world’s first internet-based online service and satellite broadband network, and founder of Loral Cyberstar-Teleport Europe, Europe’s first independent private trans-border satellite communications network. Johnson is also founding president of the VATM, the Association of Private Telecom Operators in Germany and founding president of the Global Telecom Women’s Network.

J Y R K I K ATA I N E NVICE-PRESIDENT FOR JOBS, GROWTH, INVESTMENT AND COMPETITIVENESS, EUROPEAN COMMISSIONJyrki Katainen is currently the vice-president of the European Commission responsible for jobs, growth, investment and competitiveness. He joined the Commission in July 2014 as vice-president for economic and monetary affairs and the euro. Before that he served as prime minister of Finland from 2011 to 2014 and minister of finance from 2007 to 2011. From 1999 to 2014, he was a member of the Finnish Parliament for the National Coalition Party (Kokoomus). Katainen was also a member of the Finnish delegation to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly from 2003 2007 as well as a deputy member of the Finnish delegation to the Nordic Council from 2001 to 2003.

J E A N L A N G ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT, R&D PROJECTS GLOBAL HEALTH, PARTNERSHIPS & FUNDING, SANOFI PASTEUR Jean Lang joined Sanofi Pasteur R&D in 1991. Until 2000, he conducted research in Asia, Europe, Latin America and the US on vaccination devices, specific immune globulins, Japanese encephalitis and dengue vaccines. From 2001 to 2013 he developed a specific interest in flavivirus vaccine improvements and managed various multi-disciplinary teams of scientists within research and manufacturing. Since 2014, Lang’s focus has expanded to global health-driven projects, leading him to co-direct the R&D Alliance between Sanofi Pasteur and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He is also the Industry Strategic Governing Group ID co-chair of the Innovative Medicines Initiative the largest European public-private partnership where he also co-leads the Biopreparedness Initiative.

H E I D I L A R S O NDIRECTOR, THE VACCINE CONFIDENCE PROJECT; PROFESSOR, LONDON SCHOOL OF HYGIENE & TROPICAL MEDICINE (LSHTM) Heidi Larson is an anthropologist and director of The Vaccine Confidence Project (VCP), a World Health Organisation (WHO) Centre of Excellence for addressing vaccine hesitancy. She is also a professor of infectious disease epidemiology at the LSHTM and an associate clinical professor of global health at the University of Washington and the Chatham House Centre. Larson previously headed the global immunisation communication at UNICEF, served on the WHO expert group on vaccine hesitancy, and chaired the advocacy task force at Gavi. Her research focuses on the analysis of social and political factors that can affect uptake of health interventions and influence policies, specialised on risk and rumour management from clinical trials to delivery.

M I K A L A U TA N A L AEXECUTIVE DIRECTOR,TEKES - THE FINNISH FUNDING AGENCY FOR INNOVATIONMika Lautanala has over 20 years of experience in innovation funding and innovation policy. He has held various positions at Tekes - the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation. His responsibilities have covered project funding, programme management, international cooperation, development activities and various director positions. He is currently in charge of Tekes strategy, programmes, foresight and evaluation activities as well as the Tekes international networks. Lautanala has also worked for the Finnish ministry of employment and economy where he was responsible for renewal and recovery activities concerning industrial restructuring.

A N D R E L E E FOUNDER, SNOWFLAKE INNOVATIONS; FOUNDER, TECHNOLOGY RESERVE Andre Lee is the founder of Snowflake Innovations Inc., a privately owned investment holding company based in Vancouver, Canada that specializes in engineering new business platform models directed at the spaces of intangible assets, innovation and finance. He is also the founder of Technology Reserve, an innovation bank. Prior to this, he was a co-founder and manager of the Invention Development Fund, Intellectual Ventures. This fund raised a $650 million private equity fund to invest in inventions, partnering with 300 universities, research institutes and companies from Asia, Europe and North America. Lee started his career in finance at Lehman Brothers in New York.

C H R I S T I A N L E F F L E RDEPUTY SECRETARY GENERAL FOR ECONOMIC AND GLOBAL ISSUES, EUROPEAN EXTERNAL ACTION SERVICEChristian Leffler’s career in international relations began in 1980 when he joined the Swedish foreign service. After establishing new working structures of the Representation, he became the first Swedish “Antici,” responsible under the Permanent Representative for policy coordination in the Council of Ministers. He joined the European Commission in 1996, where he was the director in charge of the Middle East and South Mediterranean from 2002 to 2007. In 2010, Leffler became deputy director general of the DG for development and relations with African, Caribbean and Pacific States, as well as a senior adviser to EU High Representative Catherine Ashton, assisting her in the preparation for the establishment of the new EEAS.

She is on a mission to make research freely available for the benefit of humanity. Markram was the conceptual architect behind Frontiers’ scalable IT, raising €20 million for the company and bringing it to profitability within four years. After just 10 years, Frontiers has flourished under Markram’s leadership, gaining recognition and winning the 2014 ALPSP Gold Award for Innovation in Publishing. O L AV LY S N E PROFESSOR, UNIVERSITY OF OSLO; SECTION DIRECTOR, SIMULA RESEARCH LABORATORYOlav Lysne was the leader of the National Commission for Digital Vulnerability formed by the Norwegian government. The commission was active from August 2014 to September 2015, and consisted of nine experts from all relevant sectors in Norway. Their mandate was to write a report that forms the basis for the government’s cyber-policy. Since 2010 Lysne has been working on developing methods for measurement of resilience in mobile broadband networks. So far, this work has resulted in the formation of a nation-wide monitoring system of mobile broadband in Norway, funded directly by the Norwegian government. Through 2015-2018 the system is extended to four other European countries through the H2020 project MONROE.

In addition to his remarkable career as a scientist and academic, he has years of experience in the development of higher education and science policy, both at national and international levels. Mönkkönen has served as dean of the faculty of pharmacy of the University of Kuopio, following which he became a dean of the faculty of health sciences of the University of Eastern Finland. In 2015, Mönkkönen was appointed academic rector of the university and he now directs the activities of the university and is responsible for its cost-effectiveness and profitability.

He serves as first director in the board of the European Cyber Security Organisation (ECSO). J O A N N A N E W M A N SECRETARY GENERAL, THE ASSOCIATION OF COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITIES Joanna Newman is the chief executive and secretary general of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU). She is responsible for fostering and promoting the aims of the ACU in developing inter-Commonwealth relations in higher education. Before joining the ACU in April 2017, Newman was vice-principal (International) at King’s College London, where she was responsible for all international matters for the university. Prior to this, Newman represented the UK higher education sector as director of the UK Higher Education International Unit. For the last couple of years, she has been a programme director for South East Asia and Pacific countries in the NSF’s office of international science and engineering. Before coming to the NSF, Ortega was a research associate at the Duke University marine laboratory, where she conducted research on the ecology of oyster populations along the North Carolina coast.

From 1995-1999, she was a policy officer in the secretariat general in the unit responsible for relations with the Council-Coreper I. Between 2004-2010 she served within the secretariat general of the Commission as a head of unit, responsible for the units in charge of relations with the Council-Coreper I, co-decision, security and justice. S C H M I T T SENIOR DIRECTOR PFIZER VACCINES; HEAD (EUROPEAN UNION) VACCINES MEDICINES DEVELOPMENT GROUP AND SCIENTIFIC AFFAIRS, PFIZER Following a 3-year-fellowship at the infectious diseases service of the Memorial-Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, Heinz-Josef Schmitt passed his board-certifications in microbiology, pediatrics and infectious diseases. Schmitt served as chairman of the German Vaccination Advisory board (STIKO) from 1998 to 2007 and was an advisor to the World Health Organisation from 2003 to 2007. In 2006, he received the Helmut Stickl Award from the German Academy of Pediatrics for outstanding work in promoting the use of vaccination to prevent infectious diseases. Since May 2011, he has had roles as senior director for medical and scientific affairs for vaccines in Europe for Pfizer; he now heads Pfizer’s Medicines Development Group for vaccines in the EU.

M I C H A L S C H WA R T ZPROFESSOR FOR NEUROIMMUNOLOGY, WEIZMANN INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE Over the past two years, Michal Schwartz has worked to develop methodologies to manipulate the immune system to defend against the effects of acute injuries, chronic neurodegenerative conditions, mental dysfunction, and brain aging. Because of her pioneering work, she has received a variety of distinctions, including the NARSAD Distinguished Investigator Award (2007) and two advanced grants of the European Research Council (2008, 2017). In 2016, she published the book “Neuroimmunity: How Brain Science Will Revolutionize the Way We Live and Age”, which received accolades from the annual PROSE Awards for scholarly publishing. Schwartz received her PhD in immunology from the Weizmann Institute, Israel.

R O B E R T-J A N S M I T S DIRECTOR-GENERAL FOR RESEARCH AND INNOVATION, EUROPEAN COMMISSION Robert-Jan Smits is the director-general for Research and Innovation at the European Commission. In this capacity, he is responsible for defining and implementing EU policy and programmes in the field of research and innovation. Smits was one of the main architects and negotiators of Horizon 2020. He has also been instrumental in the development of several other policy initiatives in the field of European science and innovation such as the European Research Council (ERC) and the European Roadmap for large-scale facilities. Smits chairs several high-level committees such as the European Research Area Committee (ERAC) and the Steering Committee of the ERC.
