A Surrey woman is appealing for assis-tance in locating a memorial stone that hasdisappeared from its yearlong home inQueen’s Park.

Karline Wishart visited Queen’s Parkon Monday, May 24, the one-year anniver-sary of the death of her good friend MikeOxtoby. After he died suddenly of a heartattack, Wishart painted a memory stone inhis honour and placed it in Queen’s Park.

“I stood there for a few seconds. I didn’tknow what to do,” she said about discover-ing the rock was missing. “I felt like I lostmy friend all over again.”

While Wishart and Oxtoby both live inSurrey, they often stopped in Queen’s Parkto have coffee. The memory stone had beenlocated near a picnic table at the north endof the park, near Sixth Avenue and FirstStreet.

“It’s about the size of a football. It washeavy,” she said. “It has got a HondaGoldwing motorcycle painted on it withwhite and purple flowers, his name on topof it, his date of birth and the date of hispassing.”

Wishart and Oxtoby were riding part-ners. They’d often go for motorcycle rides, stopping at Queen’s Park to have a coffee.

“We used to go there all the time,” shesaid of the local park. “We would even gothere in the wintertime and sit there andhave our coffee.”

Wishart said she isn’t an artist but wasinspired to paint the memory stone in herfriend’s memory.

“I just wanted to do this. I thoughtmaybe to have a memory place, if hisfriends wanted to have a place where theycould have coffee,” she said about the stonethat was tucked into an out-of-the-wayspace. “There is really only four or five of uswho know where it is. It was in the hollowof a tree. You have to walk right up to thetree to see it.”

Workers in the city’s parks departmentwere aware of the stone but didn’t move itas it didn’t get in the way of equipment usedfor mowing or maintaining the grounds.

“He (Mike) made a joke about the tree,”she recalled.

“He had new shoes with a weird print. He put his footprint there and said, I havemarked my place.”

Wishart asks anyone who finds the stoneor knows of its whereabouts to call her, noquestions asked, at 604-314-2897 or return itto the park.

“It’s heartbreaking for me,” she said of itsloss. “Mike’s friends would like it back.”

Cough medicines, vitamins, Band-Aids … and cigarettes? B.C. residentsmay be used to seeing one of the mosttoxic legal substances for sale in phar-macies where they buy products toimprove their health, but thatdoesn’t make it right.

With World No TobaccoDay having just passed onMonday, Physicians for aSmoke-Free Canada is calling on B.C.and Manitoba – the only two Canadianprovinces that still allow pharmaciesto sell cigarettes – to join the rest of the

country and stop this unhealthy practice.“Tobacco kills. Selling tobacco in

pharmacies gives false and dangerouscredibility to cigarettes,” says Dr. MilanKhara, clinical director of the Vancouver

Coastal Health tobacco depen-dence clinic and member ofPhysicians for a Smoke-FreeCanada. “Tobacco is not com-patible with health, and the

role of the pharmacist is not compatiblewith that of tobacco vendor.”

The reason stores with pharmaciescontinue to sell cigarettes seems obvi-

ous: profit. Of course, not all of thefoods sold in drug stores or grocerystores are healthy, and the argumentcould be made that pop and chips doas much damage to some people ascigarettes do to others. The difference, though, is that people who damage theirhealth through overconsumption of fat-and sugar-laden foods don’t harm oth-ers, at least directly.

Smokers, however, impact other peo-ple’s health, no matter how consideratethey try to be of non-smokers. Even newrules banning smoking within three

metres of doorways to public buildingsjust mean that smokers huddle on side-walks, where non-smokers have to holdtheir breath as they walk by.

How can we, as a society, justifyallowing pharmacies to continue sell-ing cigarettes? They’re still visible tochildren, since the covers put in place tohide them from view have to be openedeach time a clerk takes a package out.

What kind of message does sellingcigarettes in the same place as medicinesend to kids?

The wrong one.

Public may endup voting on HST

John Slater. Richard Lee.Terry Lake. Pat Pimm. DaveHayer. Eric Foster.

Recognize any of thosenames? I didn’t think so.

They are all MLAs, all mem-bers of the B.C. Liberal govern-ment backbench (a status thatvirtually guarantees a cloak ofanonymity). And they all sit onan obscure legislative committeethat has never actually met butwhich is about to play a pivotalrole in determining the fate ofthe harmonized sales tax in thisprovince. The select standingcommittee on legislative initia-tives will be given the task ofwhat to do with that anti-HSTpetition that continues to collectsignatures.

I’ve written in this spacebefore that despite the obvi-ous unpopularity of the HST,the B.C. Liberal government isunlikely to repeal the tax on itsown, even as it tumbles off a cliffin public opinion.

Last week, Premier GordonCampbell said he will “followthe law” and hand the petitionoff to the committee, which willbe faced with two avenues ofpossible action.

The committee will eitherturn the petition’s language intoa piece of legislation to be tabledin the legislature, or it will sub-mit the petition to a general ref-erendum across the province.

Recently, I speculated the ref-erendum route was unlikely, butnow I’m not so sure. The reasonfor rethinking this possibility isthat like many other people, Ineglected to go back and reviewthe legislation governing referen-dums in this province.

The law states that 50 percent of all voters in this provincemust vote in favour in order fora referendum question to passand become legislation. Not 50per cent of those who bother tovote – but 50 per cent of the nearthree million registered votersin B.C.

Will 1.5 million people voteto repeal the HST? That’s thenumber that is required, andwhile it’s certainly possible, itmay prove too high a number toattain.

To put this in context, remem-ber that in the 2009 election, only1.6 million people even botheredto vote. In other words, almostevery single person who votedlast time – for whatever party– would have to vote yes in areferendum to repeal the HST inorder for it to pass.

To put it another way, theanti-HST petition, while verysuccessful (much to my surprise,I admit) is still a long way fromattracting 1.5 million signatures.

OUR VIEWTHE RECORD

Government line on HST bafflingDear Editor:Re: Liberals Never Promised Not to Bring in HST:Hansen, Letters to the editor, The Record, May 22

Let me see if I understand the (finance) minister’suse of an HST quotation correctly. He claims that theHST “is not something that is contemplated in theB.C. Liberal platform.” Was this supposed to leadthe voters to believe that the HST was not ruled outin the B.C. Liberal platform?

Is the reader expected to presume that the HSTmay be considered or planned or getting organizedsomewhere in secret, but that it’s not the public’sright to know in advance, and if HST is announcedjust after an election, nothing has been said, prom-ised or broken? How can anyone interpret it thisway?

The main question is: What is to stop any reader

from presuming that the quote means there will beno HST in the foreseeable future? If this presump-tion is wrong, what does the quote mean? To assertthat “such is the case” is to deny that “such is notthe case.”

If the quote does not deny anything, it does notreally say anything. What, then, is it supposed tomean? The letter’s answer is raising more questionsthan explanations, and I have yet to see what senseit is supposed to make for the readers.

West, would use the same expression“dump-off” in relation to the body foundin the apartment parking lot on RoyalAvenue if the victim were a relative of his.

I find it a very poorly chosen and offen-sive description for a suspected murdervictim. It is likely the fellow was a distantrelative of mine. I have not seen any ofthe family for almost 40 years. Calling theending of someone’s life a “dump-off” isappalling. Show at least some sensitivity,Mr. Mayor.

Pier park is over budgetDear Editor:

In recent editorials, the media wasespousing the virtues of this wonderful(Westminster Pier Park) project. Our elect-ed mayor and council support this project;the provincial and federal governmentsupplied money for this project, but whatabout the taxpayer? Did anyone ask usif we wanted to spend more than $1,033for every man, woman and child livingin New Westminster on a park? This isbased on the reported cost of $54 millionto complete the park, adding $8 millionto purchase the park and divided by the60,000 residents of New Westminster.

When the mayor announced the landpurchase for $8 million and a completepark for $25 million in 2009, did he dohis homework? Or did he rush into thisannouncement as an election goodie forthe people of New Westminster?

I cringed when I read the city admin-istrator quoted as saying, “It’s not going

over budget.”Mr. Daminato, the park is over bud-

get! We are only getting half the park!Followed by, and I quote, “We’re manag-ing the project in such a way that we con-trol the money.” Yes, you certainly do, withthe recent mayor’s and council’s approvalof a $17-million loan bylaw for the park, thus providing the city an option to bor-row an additional $9 million if they needto. Was this bylaw passed knowing it wasgoing over budget? Is this the control thecity is talking about? Is the cost to borrowthis money included in the estimated $62million for the park?

A promise of a complete park for $25million by March 2011 is now simply justnot true. The pier is not the first projectto go over budget and likely won’t be thelast. However, considering the multimil-lions of dollars at stake, this could be thebiggest in New Westminster’s history.

James Crosty, New Westminster

Thanks for HST coverageDear Editor:

First, I would like to commend TheRecord for the coverage of the HST. It ismedia such as yours that can help citizensof our communities make positive resultsin our province.

I would also like to thank all the citizensof New Westminster for their dedicationand commitment to fighting the HST. Weare all volunteers fighting for our right tohave honesty in government, no matterwhat political party is in charge. It doesnot matter what (the premier) throws atus after July 5. We have won and willremember.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

The New Westminster Record is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing

the province’s newspaper industry. The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member

newspapers. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you

may contact the B.C. Press Council. For information, phone 888-687-2213 or go to www.bcpresscouncil.org.

Bill Vander Zalm, whohas organized the petitiondrive, thinks he may get amillion signatures by thetime his sign-up periodexpires in early July. Thatwould be a very impres-sive accomplishment, buthe’d still be a half-millionsignatures short of what’srequired in a referendum.

Another importantfactor to consider is thetiming of the referendum.By law, it’s not to hap-pen until Sept. 24, 2011.After more than one yearactually living with thefull impact – negative andpositive – of the HST, will1.5 million people still turnout to vote to repeal it?

For these reasons, thereferendum appears to be

the most enticing optionopen to a government hell-bent on keeping the tax.The B.C. Liberals are likelyto bet that when all is saidand done 16 months fromnow, not enough peoplewill get out and vote to getrid of the HST.

But, then again, manypeople discounted thechances of the anti-HSTpetition succeeding andwere proven dead wrong.History shows that taxrevolts don’t last verylong, but we may be inuncharted waters with theHST. The prospects of arecall campaign againstone or more Liberal MLAsis still a real possibility, even if a referendum ispromised.

In any event, the white-

hot issue will soon behanded off to that groupof anonymous B.C. Liberalbackbenchers (one has towonder whether Campbellwill alter the makeup ofthe committee to give hisside more experience).

Of course, the premierwill be telling his back-benchers what to do (theNDP has four members aswell).

Nevertheless, it seemsodd that the fate of theB.C. Liberal governmentis about to be turned overto six people with verylittle political experiencebetween them.

But, as the premiersays, that’s the law.

When Stephanie Howell got the callfrom husband Gary Hepting on Fridaymorning, she thought it was a joke goneterribly wrong.

“When Gary told me somebody had sto-len our copper wiring, I didn’t think it hadhappened at all,” said Howell, the fundrais-ing and sponsorship coordinator for NewWestminster Baseball. “But when he toldme it was no joke, I think I swore more thatmorning than I ever have in my life.”

Howell and Hepting, along with twoother electricians, had spent more than 12hours on Thursday completing the wiringfor the newly installed scoreboard at JustinMorneau Field in Moody Park. When therain came late Thursday, the crew packedup their things at 10 p.m., with the plan toreturn in the morning to get the last hour ofwork done.

When Hepting arrived Friday at 9 a.m.,he found the surprise that had his wife

swearing up a storm.“It’s unbelievable in that short time

frame that somebody tried to undo all thegood work we had done,” said Howell.Howell said it appears someone tried to tugmore of the wire out, leaving plier marks onthe wiring left behind.

The thieves made off with seven strandsof wire, each only about three feet inlength.

Hepting and Howell got to work splicingnew wires together, and they got everythingfunctional in time for the 6 p.m. start of thetournament on Friday.

“We got the lights working with a tempo-rary fix,” said Howell. “When the weathergets better, we’ll do a more permanent fix.”

While the tournament got started ontime, the rain meant only four of 12 gameson Saturday got completed. Organizerscaught up on Sunday, completing the final18 games by 9 p.m.

The scoreboard was purchased by theNew Westminster Baseball Association withfunds from its many sponsors.

Watt said trustees dotheir best to serve the par-ent advisory councils.

“We do what we can, buta lot us still have jobs thatcan conflict as well,” shesaid. “Last year, the particu-lar school in question wasthe only school that hadn’tsubmitted their PAC datesto the school district officein advance. A number ofrequests were then put infor them to change theirdates, but they refused.

“The first thing I didwhen I went to the HumePAC was give them mye-mail and my cellphonenumber if they ever needto reach me. I’m not an

unavailable person, butI might not necessarilyattend every PAC meetingthere is.”

Both trustees pointed outthat the New Westminsterschool board is one of theonly ones in the provincewhere trustees even attendPAC meetings.

“It’s not common,” saidWatt. “There is this kindof expectation with NewWestminster, but usuallytrustees will only attend ifthere is something reallybig.”

Barton agreed the tim-ing of meetings can be anissue.

“If they happen to coin-cide, obviously it is a prob-

lem for the trustee,” shesaid. “Mr. Atkinson said hehoped they would choosea night other than Tuesdaynext year, although the com-ment from Robson was thathe had only shown up oncein three years, and that wasjust before the election.”

‘Shredathon’ setThe New Westminster Firefighters

Charitable Society hopes its upcomingshredathon could become as popular asits annual Christmas tree chipping event.

Each January, the charitable societyruns a two-day Christmas tree chippingevent to raise funds that it disperses to awide variety of charities in the commu-nity. Instead of chipping trees, the societywill soon be shredding paper to raisefunds.

“Everything is 100 per cent by dona-tion,” said Glen Bailey, vice-president ofthe charitable society. “It all goes to thefirefighters’ charitable society.”

Individuals and businesses are wel-come to bring any sensitive material orpaperwork to the June 19 event, where itwill be immediately shredded by a pro-fessional shredding company and thenrecycled. The shredathon takes place onSaturday, June 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. inthe Canada Games Pool parking lot.

“It’s pretty much unlimited paper aslong as it is in a container the average

person can carry,” Bailey said. “If we canlift it and dump it in the shredder, we’lltake it.”

Like the tree chipping event, peoplewill be able to buy a hotdog or enjoysome free entertainment. All activities atthe event will be by donation.

“G&F Financial is going to be therewith their popcorn (machine),” Baileysaid. “BCAA is going to have a littlebooth with information about their prod-ucts. Their manager, Marguerite Murray, approached us with this idea.”

Bailey said several environmentalgroups are expected to attend and pro-vide information about their efforts.

KNIGHTS 4-3 AT ULTIMATE CHAMPIONSHIPS ’Bellies useovertime towin again

For a second straightweek, the New WestminsterSalmonbellies needed over-time at home to keep theirundefeated record intact.

In a similar scorelineto a 17-14 extra-time winover Langley in its WesternLacrosse Association homeopener, New Westminstergot by a game NanaimoTimbermen side 15-11 fol-lowing a 10-minute over-time at Queen’s Park ArenaMay 27.

Two weeks ago, theSalmonbellies allowedLangley to take control ofa 12-goal opening periodwith six straight goals.

Last week, NewWestminster were cruis-ing along on a 7-4 clip inthe middle period beforeNanaimo replied with fiveunanswered goals.

In both games it tooka late third-period surge, sparked by lefthanderJordan Hall to position thehome side for the overtimecomeback.

Player of the gameMartin Cummings witha career-high four goalsgot things started with hissecond goal of the gamemidway through the thirdperiod.

Hall and team scoringleader Cliff Smith then tal-lied to tie the game at 11apiece.

In OT, New Westminsterwas again perfect, outscor-ing the T-Men 4-0, includ-ing the game-winner on

Cummings’ first of a back-to-back pair to start theperiod.

“We’re waiting untilthe last 10 minutes of thegame before we elevate ourgame,” said Cummings, who has 10 points in hisfirst four games and is scor-ing on a .412 per cent clip.

The team’s last two homewins have been a double-edged sword for last sea-son’s Mann Cup finalists, added Cummings.

“We’ve played better onthe road and we have tocarry our road game backhome,” Cummings said.“In the second period wewere slow on our feet. Wehave to push the tempoand push the transition upthe floor.”

Tyler Richards, who wasyanked early in the secondperiod in the home opener, went the distance againstNanaimo making 48 stopsfor the ’Bellies.

Ilija Gajic played his firstgame for the Salmonbelliesagainst Nanaimo and con-tributed five points, includ-ing a pair of goals to thewin.

First-round draft pickCorbyn Tao tallied hisfirst senior A hat trick in afive-point outing for NewWestminster.
