PART 1 ACKNOWLEDGMENT

The engaged and awarded Contractor acknowledges that they have read and understood the specifications outlined herein, and will do their best to comply accordingly. The Contractor will inform the Consultant (WMW PUBLIC COMMUNICATION) and Owner (NEW WESTMINSTER PUBLIC LIBRARY) of any inquiries about the specifications prior the acceptance of the contract.

PART 2 PROCESS

1.0 SITE VISITPrior to submitting a bid, visit the site, examine all existing conditions, confirm measurements, examine all drawings and specifications to ensure there are no conflicts and ensure proper coordination of all parts of the work. It will be understood that any bids received will comply in de-tail, quantity, level of finish and design intent with these drawings and specifications.

2.0 QUALITY ASSURANCE2.1 Provide first class workmanship, detailing and installation.2.2 The Contractor shall allow the Owner and the Consultant full access

to plants and shops to view and inspect all processes and methods employed in the fabrication and assembly of deliverables.

2.3 The Consultant, on behalf of the Owner may reject any and all com-ponents which, in his opinion are not in strict conformance with the contract documents and reviewed shop drawings, approved mock-ups and samples. All quality control procedures are the responsibility of the Contractor.

2.4 If during a site visit or review of the provided documents the Contractor identifies a potential for compromised performance in the specified materials and methods outlined by the Consultant, the Contractor will inform the Consultant/Owner, and will advise of an improved alternative fabrication method.

3.0 SUBMITTALS3.1 Do not proceed with fabrication of graphics and signs until all below list-

ed reviews and approvals have been completed in the following order:.1 Shop drawings, product data and graphic layouts have been

reviewed and returned..2 Samples have been reviewed..3 Mock-ups have been reviewed..4 Site locations and measurements of signs and graphics verified.

3.2 Shop Drawings and Graphic Proofs: .1 Consultant retains the copyright for electronic drawing files made

available to the Contractor.

.2 Use of the supplied electronic drawing files for any subsequent Project is strictly forbidden without the express written consent of the Consultant.

.3 The drawings in this document are issued for tender only and are not for construction. A final set of construction drawings and electronic files will be delivered to the awarded Contractor upon contract initiation with the Owner.

.4 The Contractor will submit shop drawings or graphic proofs for all manufactured items and all graphic layouts included in this docu-ment.

.5 Consultant reserves the right to reject shop drawings prepared from electronic drawing files submitted to them by the Contrac-tor that have not been substantially altered from the electronic drawing files provided.

.6 Contractor shall provide all shop drawings and graphic proofs for all printed and manufactured items as hard copy in duplicate and PDF format for review and processing by the Consultant and Owner.

.7 Show complete details of the construction of all exterior and interior graphics or sign types, including the sign construction and assembly and graphics portion of each sign.

.8 All graphics shop drawings shall be minimum 1:10 scale. Graphic layouts for large-scale signs (full size sign larger than 1200 mm in length or height dimension) shall be minimum 1:5 scale.

.9 Samples of graphics must be submitted at 1:1 and of a swatch size of at least 300 mm x 300 mm. All graphic layout drawings submit-ted shall be produced using graphics application software, such as Adobe Illustrator. Graphic layouts produced using architectural drawing programs such as “AutoCAD” or raster-based programs like “Photoshop” will not be accepted.

.10 Assembly and construction drawings shall include drawings of complete assemblies; large scale details of members and ma-terials; anchoring and anchors, all dimensions, descriptions and finishing specifications for all materials and product components. Indicate access and disassembly procedures required to access items requiring replacement. Detail drawings shall be full size. Indicate all mounting details and components.

.11 Clearly identify all shop drawings by title and number and reference to applicable contract drawings. Identify all proposed deviations from contract drawings.

3.3 Samples:.1 Provide all samples in duplicate for approval by the Owner. Provide

all samples as specified herein and noted on the drawings..2 Samples to be consistent with contract drawings and colour and

finish specifications. Artwork for the samples to be from the draw-ing package.

.3 Provide 300 x 300 mm samples, except where noted, of all specified finishes for all sign components and materials identified on the drawings. Complete assembly samples may be used for installation if approved for production. Below are the requested samples:

Colour swatch for each of P1-P4 S1.1: Full spec end of stack sign ID1.2: Sample painted metal letter ID1.3: Sample routed and infilled wood with graphic ID1.4: Sample acrylic icon DL1.4: Sample painted wood letter SD1.1 Full spec Shelf Divider ST1.1 Standing Sign template

4.0 PROJECT CLOSEOUT SUBMITTAL4.1 Provide operations and maintenance information:4.2 Supply a sign maintenance manual for all sign types, as well as any

manuals for operations of LED, lighting, computer-controlled equip-ment, as part of the sign fabrication contract.

5.0 GUARANTEE5.1 All items shall be guaranteed by the hardware manufacturer, by written

certification, for a period of one (1) year from Substantial Performance of the Work against any defects in the design, materials, finish, function and workmanship and that any defects will be made good by the manu-facturer at no additional cost to the Owner.

PART 3 PRODUCTS

1.0 GRAPHIC TECHNIQUES1.1 Use only artwork provided by the Consultant. No other symbols or

artwork may be used on the project unless by prior approval by the Consultant or Owner. Samples or mock-ups produced using substitute symbols, typography or graphics will be rejected.

1.2 Artwork will be provided by the Consultant in digital format (PDF and/or Adobe Illustrator “.ai” formats). Vector-format drawings will be supplied except where raster images are required. All raster images will be high resolution as required for the individual media or application unless scanning is listed as a requirement of Contract. The Contractor is responsible for all computer platform conversions. All disks and copies made by the Contractor and/or subcontractors, of all disks with the Owner’s original artwork shall be returned to the Consultant/Owner at the completion of the work.

1.3 Copies of all digital and analogue files shall be archived by the Contrac-tor for future reprints as required by the Owner.

1.4 Original artwork shall not be harmed in any way, writing, cutting, etc, and shall be stored for future return or reproduction at the Owner’s request.

1.5 Where possible, all artwork will be supplied with fonts saved as out-lines. If fonts are required, they will not be supplied with artwork files and are the responsibility of the Contractor to supply.

2.0 REPRODUCTION METHODS

2.1 All letters, numbers, symbols and other graphic devices on sign faces indicated on the drawings to be precisely formed, incised forms with no flaws, burrs or cross cuts and ready for prime and finish as specified in the contract drawings. Corners of stencils and letters must be precise to electronic artwork within tolerance of 0.5mm or will be rejected. Router-cut letters may be rejected if not be precise. Hand cut materials will not be approved.

2.2 Finished graphics shall resist casual removal or tampering.2.3 Vinyl, laminates and reflective sheeting shall be defect free and finished

graphics shall be bubble and wrinkle free. 3.0 ACRYLIC AND METAL SUBSTRATES AND GRAPHIC FILMS3.1 All acrylic and metal substrates shall match the drawing specified by

the Consultant. The Contractor shall seek a review from the Consultant and Owner for recommend alternative manufacturer or fabrication methods

3.2 Exposed edges and corners to be eased or lightly bevelled so they are not sharp to touch. Cut panels to be free of scratches or imperfections.

3.3 Premium pressure sensitive film prepared and applied to the manufac-turer’s specifications for high tack adhesion.

3.4 Vinyl and reflective sheeting shall be defect free and finished graphics shall be bubble and wrinkle free.

3.5 Finished graphics shall resist casual removal or tampering.3.6 Large vinyl and applications using tiling shall have seamless clean

joints. Joints should not cut through text or other delicate graphics. 3.7 Use automated cutting or processing systems; photo-mechanical (pan-

tograph-guided router with rigid masters) or computer-driven blade. Hand cut vinyl graphics will not be accepted.

4.0 WOOD4.1 All wood shll match the type and grain specified in the drawings and

finish schedule.4.2 Select wood substrate that is straight, true and without knots.4.3 Clean sand and smooth finish all visible surfaces.

5.0 FASTENERS5.1 All fasteners shall be stainless steel, selected for each application.

All bolts shall have lock washers or nuts with integral anti-loosening feature. Screws shall be self-drilling, self-tapping, head configuration to suit application.

5.2 Separate dissimilar metals with isolation membrane.

6.0 OTHER PRODUCTS6.1 As detailed on the drawings.

7.0 FABRICATION7.1 Fabricate sign assemblies to drawing requirements, shop drawings and

to match approved mock-ups.7.2 All aluminum and steel fabrication and welding shall be to CSA stan-

dards and as detailed.

Specifications



PART 4 EXECUTION

1.0 PREPARATION1.1 Verify exact location and orientation of sign on site with Owner’s repre-

sentative prior to installation. Fabricator may be required to move and re-install even if conditions do not permit typical install location.

2.0 COORDINATION2.1 Sign(s) to fit within existing and new-built frames and millwork. All mea-

surements to be site-verified by Contractor.2.2 Coordinate all construction activities as required to ensure efficient and

orderly installation of each part of the Work. Coordinate Work with Own-er’s representative for the site access and installation scheduling.

2.3 Where installation of one part of the work is dependent on installation of other components, either before or after its own installation, schedule and coordinate construction activities in the sequence required to obtain the best results.

2.4 Where availability of space is limited, coordinate installation of different components to assure maximum accessibility for required maintenance, service and repair.

2.5 Make adequate provisions to accommodate items scheduled for later installation under separate contract or by Owner’s own forces.

2.6 Coordinate the installation of data and power cabling from locations within existing buildings.

2.7 The installer of each major component shall inspect both the substrate and conditions under which work is to be performed. Notify the Owner of unacceptable conditions.

3.0 CUTTING AND PATCHING3.1 Protect all remaining existing site works from damage during

installation.3.2 Execute cutting, fitting and patching required to complete the Work. All

cutting and patching shall be performed by skilled tradesmen specializ-ing in trade of material or surface being cut.

3.3 Remove and replace defective and non-conforming Work.3.4 Restore work with new products in accordance with requirements of

Contract Documents.3.5 Provide openings in non-structural elements of Work for penetrations of

mechanical and electrical work.3.6 Execute work by methods to avoid damage to other work, and which will

provide proper surfaces to receive patching and finishing.3.7 Cut rigid materials using appropriate saw or core drill. Pneumatic or

impact tools are not allowed without prior approval of the Consultant.3.8 Refinish surfaces to match adjacent finishes; for continuous surfaces,

refinish to nearest intersection; for an assembly, refinish entire unit.

7.3 Provide elevations and details of all internal structures; diagonal truss pattern and clip connections to ensure consistency and avoid conflict between connection details.

7.4 Any certification labels, manufacturer’s name plates shall be placed on final assembled sign as required by safety codes and be as unobtrusive as possible. Final locations are subject to approval by the Consultant/Owner.

8.0 FINISHES8.1 References herein are to the Master Painters Institute (MP I)

“Architectural Painting Manual”, 2004 edition, Approved Products List.8.2 All paint products shall be from one manufacturer.8.3 Comply with manufacturer’s installation instructions, including

substrate preparation, coating thickness, and curing time between coats.

9.0 COLOURS.1 Colours are as noted on the drawings..2 Each colour used, regardless of medium, method of application or

material or fabrication /manufacturing techniques shall match exactly throughout.

4.0 INSTALLATION4.1 Install signs and graphics plumb, square, free from warp, and straight to

correct orientation in accordance with pre-approved shop drawings and recommendations of component manufacturer.

4.2 Where vinyl or laminate application should be butt joined not overlap.4.3 Secure all work adequately and accurately to structure with concealed

non-corrosive fastenings, using backing, or anchor straps as required, or welded.

4.4 Make good all damage caused during construction to adjacent surfaces.

5.0 CLEANING AND PROTECTION5.1 Verify that accessories required have been furnished and installed.5.2 Clean and protect all exposed surfaces after installation with the manu-

facturer’s recommended cleaners.
