JEEP

Grand CherokeeOverall: A truly civilized Jeep that’s still comfortable breaking rocks; bad-boy SRT8 supertruck returns with mind-bending acceleration.Drivetrain: Base 3.6-liter V6 puts out 290 horsepower and optional 5.7-liter V8 has 360 horsepower, but the gutsy 470-horsepower SRT8 is back.

■ Along with a stiffer platform, many of the various suspension components are shared with the Mercedes-Benz ML-class sport ute (Chrysler used to be part of the Mercedes-Benz juggernaut). Jeep uses the corporate 290-horsepower 3.6-liter unit while the 5.7-liter “Hemi” V8 remains optional with 360 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. Both powerplants come with five-speed automatic transmissions. New for 2012 is the return of Jeep’s high-powered SRT8 monster. With an uprated 470-horsepower 6.4-liter Hemi, 20-inch wheels with sticker road-biased tires, upgraded brakes, active suspension and active limited-slip differentials, the ultimate Grand Cherokee promises to be just as fun through corners as it is at the drag strip. Jeep says the 4,500-pound beast will hit 60 mph in less than five seconds. All three “normal” GC

models — Laredo, Limited and Overland — are available in either rear- or four-wheel-drive. For Overland, you’ll have your choice of Quadra-Trac I with its single-speed transfer case (which is also standard on the SRT8), or the more off-road-capable Quadra Trac II and Quadra Drive II systems. Each features a two-speed transfer case with high and low gearset. Quadra Drive II includes an electronic limited-slip differential that will react to low-traction conditions quick enough to entirely prevent wheel spin. The Quadra Trac II or Quadra Drive II includes Jeep’s new Selec-Terrain control with four separate traction settings: Sand/Mud; Snow; and Rock for off-road terrain plus a Sport setting for dry pavement. Available is Jeep’s Quadra-Lift air-ride suspension that can be manually adjusted over a 4.5-inch range to provide a maximum 11.1 inches of ground clear-ance. The base Laredo’s equipment includes the usual comfort and power-operated niceties, while the top two trims include 18-inch wheels (17s are standard), remote starter and bright bi-xenon (high and low beam) head-lights that automatically adjust their intensity according to ambient light and oncoming traffic. The option list includes a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front and rear seats, 20-inch wheels, premium audio system and a power rear liftgate, to name just a few of the biggies.

Base price (incl. destination): $31,500 (2011)Type: Four-door sport-utility vehicleBase engine (hp): 3.6-liter DOHC V6 (290)Optional engine (hp): 5.7-liter OHV V8 (360); 6.7-liter OHV V8 (470, SRT8)Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheel-driveTransmissions: Five-speed automaticMPG (city/hwy): 16/23 (3.6, 4x2)Safety: Front airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control Weight (lb.): 4,470

CHEVROLET

CruzeOverall: Forget your grandmother’s old Cobalt; the Cruze sedan is modern, effi cient and stylish; engine tweaks garner two-mpg improvements in both regular turbo and Eco models.Drivetrain: Base 1.8-liter I4 and optional 1.4-liter I4 turbocharged both make 138 horsepower, but the turbo has way more load-speed spunk; both manual and optional automatic transmissions are of the six-speed variety.

■ Finally, Chevrolet has a global best-seller on its hands with the compact Cruze, and after only one year on sale in North America, Chevrolet is already improving the available technology and the car’s efficiency. The Cruze’s design closely emulates that of other Chevy sedans, especially the mid-size Malibu’s horizontally split front grille and short rear deck. Fortunately, some extra creases along each side plus more pronounced fender flares provide a welcome dose of character that distinguishes the Cruze from the rest of the stable. The interior reveals an attrac-tive seating area that wouldn’t look out of place in a more expensive sedan. There are plastic pieces to be sure, but they’re more than offset by plenty of soft-touch coverings

for the wrap-around dashboard and silvery painted trim for the steering column, door-mounted speaker surrounds, steering wheel and shifter. The base LS is equipped with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder that produces 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque. Move up to the LT and LTZ you’ll get and a smaller — less is more here — 1.4-liter turbo-charged four-cylinder that’s also rated at 138 horsepower but with 25 pound-feet more torque than the base engine. The 1.8 offers a choice of a six-speed manual transmis-sion, or optional six-speed automatic, while the 1.4 turbo is only available with the automatic. New for 2012 is an Eco model that uses the turbo engine with low-rolling-resistance tires, tweaks to the aerodynamics and other fuel-saving measures to squeeze fuel-economy ratings of 28/42 with taller ratios in the six-speed manual and a still-impressive 26/39 with the automatic. All Cruze models feature a class-leading total of 10 airbags, including driver and passenger-side knee airbags plus rear side-impact airbags. In addition, the standard stability control includes a rollover-sensing program that will deploy the airbags if it detects the car is about to tip over. Options include a premium Pioneer-brand sound package, Bluetooth short-range wireless networking, navigation system, leather-covered seats (heated in front) and 17- or 18-inch wheels (16-inchers are standard).

Base price (incl. destination): $17,200Type: Four-door sedanBase engine (hp): 1.8-liter DOHC I4 (138)Optional engine (hp): 1.4-liter DOHC I4, turbocharged (138)Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-driveTransmissions: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt.)MPG (city/hwy): 25/36(1.8, MT)Safety: Front, side-impact, front-knee, rear-side, side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability controlWeight (lb.): 3,100

DODGE

DurangoOverall: Seven-seat Dodge Durango is what the old Jeep Commander should have been; spacious, effi cient and great off the beaten path. Drivetrain: A 290-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 is the base engine, while a 360-horsepower 5.7-liter “Hemi” V8 is the obvious choice for developing maximum thrust.

■ One of the few nearly-new vehicles in Dodge’s stable, the big “D” has been designed off the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s unitized (frameless) platform. Also highly regarded is the 290-horsepower V6 (Chrysler’s newest powerplant effort) as well as the optional 360-horsepower 5.7-liter “Hemi” V8. The latter features a variable displacement system that attempts to reduce fuel consumption by shutting down half of the engine’s eight cylinders under light-load conditions. Although the V6 carries on with Dodge’s older five-speed automatic transmission, the V8 gets a brand-new six-speed automatic that can be Manually shifted. The Hemi-equipped Durango can tow heavy loads up to 7,400 pounds (6,200 pounds for the V6) and can also carry up to seven passengers when using all three rows of seats, although second-row

twin high-back bucket seats will make an appearance later in the 2012 model year. And since the same designers who penned the GC’s interior also created the Durango’s interior, comfort and roominess are also first rate. Along with four-wheel-drive, Durango options include a system that signals you when another vehicle is about to overtake you or is traveling in your blind spot(s). Another system alerts you when another vehicle is approaching from behind as you’re backing out of a parking stall. Dodge also brags that the Durango’s generous fuel tank will allow you to travel up to 500 miles without filling up.

Base price (incl. destination): $29,700Type: Four-door sport utility vehicleBase engine (hp): 3.6-liter DOHC V6 (290)Optional engine (hp): 5.7-liter OHV V8 (360)Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheel-driveTransmissions: Five-speed automatic (3.6); six-speed automatic (5.7)MPG (city/hwy): 16/23Safety: Front airbags; front and rear side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control.Weight (lb.): 4,760

RAM

1500Overall: Ram 1500 is the only light-duty pickup in the range since Dakota is done for 2012; other than a new transmission for V8 models, no big changes. Drivetrain: Carryover V6 and two optional V8 engines with up to 390 “Hemi” horsepower; V8 offerings now use six-speed automatic transmissions.

■ With the mid-sized Dakota leaving the lineup, the Ram 1500 will have to do double-duty for the 2012 model year. Last redesigned for the 2009 model year, the Ram is this year treated to only minor revisions, including a new steering wheel and paint colors. Last year’s popular Outdoorsman package continues unchanged; content includes an all-terrain tire and wheel package, additional exterior lights, special two-tone color combination, extra-large fuel tank and a trailer-towing package. You can order your Outdoorsman in rear- and four-wheel-drive and in regular, extended Quad and four-door Crew cab variants. Across the rest of the lineup, regular- cab models are available with 6’4” or eight-foot-long pickup beds, while Quad Cabs are attached to the shorter box only. The Ram Crew gets you a 5’7” bed. The Ram’s interior can be ordered with an

extra-wide floor console that can be configured to secure all sorts of bulky gear. Heated and ventilated front seats can also be selected as well as a heated steering wheel and dual-zone climate control. Ram Crew trucks feature two in-floor storage bins with removable liners that can store up to a dozen beverage cans each. There are also lockable storage compartments built into the rear fenders that can each hold up to 120 12-ounce cans. Engine choices include a base 215-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 offered as standard on rear-wheel-drive regular-cab and Quad Cabs, while all four-wheel-drive and Ram Crew trucks run with a 310-horse 4.7-liter V8. The optional 390-horsepower 5.7-liter “Hemi” engine returns as the most potent in Dodge’s light-truck arsenal. How potent, you ask? Dodge claims the Hemi will rocket the 4x2 Ram to 60 mph in slightly more than six seconds. The V6 comes with a four-speed automatic transmission while V8-equipped trucks come with a new six-speed automatic. When it comes to four-wheel-drive, buyers can choose between a part-time system and an on-demand setup that automatically engages when road conditions warrant. Along with the Outdoorsman, the Ram model designations now number 11: Tradesman, Express, ST, SLT, Sport, Sport R/T, Lone Star, Big Horn, Laramie and Laramie Longhorn with base content varying widely between each model.

Base price (incl. destination): $22,300Type: Two- /four-door pickupBase engine (hp): 3.7-liter SOHC V6 (215)Optional engines (hp): 4.7-liter SOHC V8 (310); 5.7-liter OHV V8 (390)Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheel-driveTransmissions: Four-speed automatic (3.7); six-speed automatic (V8)MPG (city/hwy): 14/20 (3.7)Safety: Front airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control.Weight (lb.): 4,550

CHRYSLER

300Overall: The performance-driven SRT is back with more muscle following a one-year absence; more model choices for buyers, from fl eet-rental friendly to a new living-large luxury edition.Drivetrain: SRT “Hemi” V8 produces 470 horses and 470 pound-feet of torque; 5.7-liter V8 and 3.6-liter V6 return, with the latter available with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

■ For 2011, the full-size sedan was significantly upgraded to include a new simplified front clip, integrated rear-deck spoiler, twin oval-shaped exhaust tips and a set of fast-acting and very bright LED taillights. Inside, the 300 received all new front seats and a redesigned dashboard with genuine wood and aluminum-look trim. A 292-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 base engine is connected to an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission that replaces the five-speed unit on all but the base 300. Not only are the eight-speed’s shifts supposed to be quicker and smoother, but the new unit helps improve fuel economy to 19 mpg city and 31 highway, compared to 18/27 for the five-speed V6. For extra thrust, Chrysler’s optional 370-horsepower 5.7-liter “Hemi”

V8 returns to save gas by running on only four of its eight cylinders under light load conditions. But the really big news for 2012 is the return of the SRT8 performance package, highlighted by a 470-horsepower 6.4-liter (392 cubic-inch) V8. Loud and proud, it rides on 20-inch wheels, tops out at 175 mph and burns to 60 mph in less than five seconds. Compared to the previous SRT8’s 6.1-liter V8, there’s an extra 80 pound-feet of torque at 2,900 revs per minute, which makes for spirited part-throttle around-town driving. A 21 percent fuel economy increase (up to 23 mpg) on the highway is achieved by use of a new active-valve exhaust system that allows the standard Fuel Saver Technology (four-cylinder mode) to engage over a wider rpm range. As a treat to the ears, the new exhaust system opens up under higher loads. Both strong and stronger Hemis operate through five-speed automatic transmissions, however only models using the 5.7 V8 or V6 can be ordered with an available all-wheel-drive setup that uncouples the front axle when it’s not needed, reducing drag on the engine. The 2012 model lineup is comprised of the base 300, 300 Limited and 300S V6-equipped models as well as the V8-powered 300C, 300S and 300C Luxury Series. The latter includes just about every luxury amenity in the Chrysler parts warehouse, including a premium leather interior and 12-way power-adjustable driver and front-passenger heated and ventilated seats.

Base price (incl. destination): $27,000Type: Four-door sedanBase engine (hp): 3.6-liter SOHC V6 (292)Optional engines (hp): 5.7-liter OHV V8 (370); 6.4-liter OHV V8 (470)Layout: Front-engine, rear- /all-wheel-driveTransmissions: Eight-speed automatic (V6); fi ve-speed automatic (base 300 V6, 5.7, 6.4)MPG (city/hwy): 19/31 (3.6 8AT)Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control

2012 FEATURE

2012 FEATURE

At long last, Chevrolet appears to be taking the small-car segment seriously. The company’s newest entry replaces the Korea-built Aveo that has been around since the 2004 model year. Like the Aveo, the Sonic is offered in both sedan and mini-wagon formats. However, these cars are constructed at GM’s Orion, Mich., Plant and not in Korea. Therefore, there’s plenty of North American style built into the Sonic, such as a stubbier-looking nose, more prominent grille and fancier headlight pods. In back, the sedan appears similar to the outgoing Aveo sedan, while the hatchback hides the rear door latches adjacent to the roof pillar. As well, the liftgate’s shape is one of the more stunning examples of this genre, with curved glass plus a set of really fancy taillamps that were apparently inspired by motorcycle headlights.

Inside, the dashboard and control panel exude an up-level quality rarely seen in the econo-car class. Both Sonic body styles are larger than their outgoing Aveo counterparts by nearly 3.5 inches in overall length. In the sub-compact class, this increase is signifi cant and helps provide a decent amount of passenger room. More is defi nitely better as far as performance is concerned.

The Sonic roars to life with a 138-horsepower 1.8-liter four-cylinder, or optional 138-horsepower 1.4-liter four-cylinder turbocharged unit. Although horsepower ratings are the same, the turbocharged engine makes 148 pound-feet of torque compared with 125 pound-feet for the base 1.8. A fi ve-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic comes on the 1.8, while the turbo is exclusively matched to a six-speed manual. Chevy says the extra-rigid body structure, wide stance and suspension components were tuned by the Corvette engineering team, which should ensure that the Sonic delivers a sporty driving experience.

Base models arrive as relatively stripped-down price leaders but include 10 standard airbags. That’s equal to the Cruze, but four airbags more than the rest of the sub-compact pack. Among a variety of options are leather-covered seats (heated in front), power sunroof, MyChevrolet hands-free phone, text and audio connectivity and larger (up to 17 inches from 15) wheels.

The Verano’s arrival constitutes a new direction for Buick … one that’s smaller and with cars that are sharper in just about every way. Already its compact Regal is making waves with its taut body, European-engineered suspension and standard and optional four-cylinder engine picks. The Regal’s only problem is that its $27,000 base price nudges up against that of the larger LaCrosse. The Verano starts at a much lower $23,500. It doesn’t come as well equipped as the loaded Regal, but its Chevrolet Cruze-based platform and basic body structure mean that it won’t be that much smaller than its sibling. For example, the Regal is only about two inches longer between the front and rear wheels, while passenger compartment volume is only two percent greater than on the Verano’s.

Although base models come with leatherette (vinyl) and cloth seats, premium versions feature plenty of wood trim and overstuffed leather-covered seat cushions. For any compact car, this is ground-breaking. The Verano’s designers say they’ve gone out of their way to make the cabin a place of exemplary peace and quiet. They’ve added fi ve layers of acoustic material within the headliner, sound-absorbing foam and other insulating materials stuffed into every possible nook and cranny, all door openings triple sealed and the use of thicker windshield and side glass for additional noise reduction.

Other sound-defeating measures include specially designed tires and alloy wheels plus “quiet-tuned” intake and exhaust systems for the standard 180-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine (also standard in both Regal and LaCrosse) that’s mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Other standard gear includes dual-zone climate control, 10 standard airbags and GM’s OnStar concierge and help line that can also activate various functions (open doors, check fuel level, etc.) from your smart phone.

A 220-horsepower four-cylinder turbocharged engine is on the option sheet and can be specifi ed with a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic. Also optional is a heated steering wheel, push-button start, electronic parking brake, premium Bose audio package and 18-inch alloy wheels (17-inchers are standard).

CHEVROLETSONIC

BUICKVERANO

2012 FEATURE

Over here is the new Focus. Over there is the old Focus. No … there is no resemblance. And parked alongside its Fiesta relation, the Focus looks positively aggressive with its wide-open-mouth air intake and more planted stance. But for those who just can’t get with the sleek-looking hatchback, the sedan offers a more conservative silhouette. It’s also the only style available if you order the price-leader “S” that comes with manual climate control, tilt and telescopic steering wheel and basic four-speaker audio system and 15-inch steel wheels.

The SE sedan and hatchback add Ford’s Sync voice-activated communications and entertainment system plus some minor interior/exterior upgrades, while SEL versions improve on the basics with a six-speed automated manual transmission, dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting and 16-inch alloy wheels.

The top-rung Titanium’s full-load content includes touch-screen audio and climate controls, push-button start, 10-speaker Sony sound system and a sport-tuned suspension with 17-inch wheels. On the options list are leather-covered seats, power sunroof, navigation system, rear-view camera and active park assist that will actually take over the parallel-parking chores for you.

For the fuel conscious, the optional SFE package - with its aero wheel covers, grille shutters, high-effi ciency tires, four-wheel disc brakes and a rear spoiler — will reportedly achieve a 40-mpg highway rating. The standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is rated at 160 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque, which is 20 more horses and 10 more pound-feet of torque than the 2011 2.0-liter Focus engine. A fi ve-speed manual transmission is standard on all models, while optional is a six-speed dual-clutch automated manual gearbox that conserves fuel by delivering lightning-quick gear changes. All models arrive with torque vectoring, which is a system that applies light braking pressure to slow down the inside wheel when the car is turning. This helps the Focus attack the corners with more precision by reducing the tendency to plow straight ahead (referred to as understeer).

In the works is an electric Focus that features a 93-kilowatt (123-horsepower) motor and lithium-ion battery pack. Ford claims that recharging takes just three to four hours from a 240-volt home station available for about $1,500 from electronics retailer Best Buy.

EquinoxOverall: Even into its third year, the Equinox has that combination of style and substance that keeps it looking fresh; even in a down economy, Chevrolet’s tall wagon continues to be hugely popular.Drivetrain: A 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine drives the front wheels, with an optional 3.0-liter DOHC V6 available in the mid-range and top-line models; optional all-wheel-drive is available across the range.

■ Popular nearly to the point of ubiquity, Chevrolet obvi-ously hit a homerun with its Equinox wagon. Sales have been brisk for three years, and it has been one of the company’s bright spots through all the financial turmoil. A massive upgrade over the model it replaced, it obvi-ously fits all the criteria asked for by buyers. Despite the large cabin, style won over substance as storage space with either the rear seat in place or folded flat decreased by close to 10 percent compared with the outgoing 2009 model. Clever touches abound, like the integrated rocker panels in the doors that reduce entry step-over height. (They also help keep pant legs from brushing up against the vehicle’s

lower body area.) The interior is likely the Equinox’s best asset. It’s simply gorgeous and includes dual gloveboxes, easy-to-read twin gauges set in large pods and plenty of handy storage bins. There’s also a versatile split folding rear seat that can be adjusted fore and aft over an eight-inch range to optimize legroom or cargo capacity. A 182-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder reigns as a base engine, with its 21/32 mpg city/highway fuel economy that embarrasses most of the competition. Optional is a 3.0-liter V6 with 255 horsepower that earns a 17/25 mpg rating and is now Flex Fuel capable, meaning it can burn E85 gasoline/ethanol blend. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard with either engine as is all-wheel-drive. A wide assortment of standard equipment (air condi-tioning, cruise control, keyless remote entry and power windows/locks/mirrors, etc.) comes in base versions, as does a new seven-inch touchscreen to work the standard audio system; moving up into the top-line models adds climate control, heated leather seats, 18-inch wheels, extra trim, and premium audio. With its friendly interior and thrifty power options, including a new navigation system for 2012, the Equinox projects a more fashionable presence and one that appears eager to pack up the gang and tackle the tasks at hand.

CHEVROLET

CamaroOverall: Camaro is fi nally winning the pony-car sales war over the Ford Mustang, but Chevrolet is keeping its foot to the fl oor with new powertrains, interior tweaks and the giant-killing ZL1.Drivetrain: The base LS and LT are motivated by an updated 3.6-liter V6 that now puts out 323 horsepower (take that, Mustang!); the mid-range SS gets a 6.2-liter V8 with 426 horsepower; ultra-powerful ZL1 gets a 580-horsepower version of the Corvette ZR1’s engine.

■ The Chevrolet Camaro returns in 2012 to play a little game of one-upmanship with the revised Ford Mustang. The base LS and LT are now motivated by an upgraded and lighter 323-horsepower (up from 312) 3.6-liter V6 fitted with either a six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic. The Camaro SS and its 6.2-liter V8 makes 426 horsepower with a six-speed manual transmission, or 400 with the six-speed automatic. The latter combo is equipped with a fuel-saving feature that shuts down half of its eight cylinders when coasting or under light load. SS models add beefier Brembo-brand brakes, lowered ride height, sport suspension, exclusive

20-inch wheels (18- and 19-inchers are standard) and a performance mode setting for the traction and stability control systems, which are vital to preventing this rear-drive machine from becoming too tail happy. Since the best Mustang is offered with a 550-horsepower supercharged V8, Chevrolet finally counters with a ZL1 Camaro that features a version of the 638-horsepower supercharged Corvette ZR1 engine, detuned slightly to 580 horsepower. While the Camaro’s general shape is retro-inspired, the lines on the ZL1 are bolder with more modern cues. It features a wide-front grille flanked by four fog lights, and a carbon-fiber hood vent. To handle all that power and torque, the ultimate Camaro gets the same Magnetic Ride Control found in the Corvette and CTS-V, and the clutch in the six-speed manual transmission is suitably beefed up (the six-speed automatic will remain an option). Expect it to hit dealers in early 2012. The “regular” convertible is available with the V6 or the 6.2-liter V8. It’s a great-looking shell for an interior that’s a mix of new and classic themes that will delight die-hard Camaro-istes; they’ll positively swoon over the revised twin center gauge pods and console-mounted dials like those found in early Camaros. Also new for 2012 is a new steering wheel, a more aggressive suspension package for the SS Coupe and a standard rear spoiler on all models.

Base price (incl. destination): $23,500Type: Two-door sports coupe/convertibleBase engine (hp): 3.6-liter DOHC V6 (323)Optional engine (hp): 6.2-liter OHV V8 (426-400, SS); 6.2-liter OHV V8, supercharged (580, ZL1)Layout: Front-engine, rear-wheel-driveTransmissions: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt.)MPG (city/hwy): 18/29 (V6, AT)Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control

BUICK

LaCrosseOverall: Buick’s big cruiser gains new technologies, fuel-saving engines and styling tweaks to stay competitive for 2012. Drivetrain: The base 2.4-liter four-cylinder now gets eAssist mild-hybrid system for added power and improved fuel effi -ciency; stout 3.6-liter V6 is now fl ex-fuel capable; all models have six-speed automatic transmissions.

■ Just two years into its life, the mid-sized LaCrosse keeps getting buffed like a favorite pair of shoes. For the 2012 model year, the entry-level model gets a new mild-hybrid electric system as standard equipment to help its 2.4-liter four-cylinder. Dubbed eAssist, the electric motor adds 15 horsepower and 79 pound-feet of torque to the 182-horsepower gasoline engine. It uses lithium-ion batteries that also allow the gasoline engine to shut off at stoplights, and regenerates electricity under braking. Fuel economy is improved too; Buick figures a 25-percent boost across the board. Top-line versions stick with the 3.6-liter V6 now with 303 horsepower, up from 280. All models use six-speed automatic transmissions, and there’s optional all-wheel-drive that sends torque to whichever wheel has the most grip.

The LaCrosse is perhaps most appreciated inside where its beautifully detailed dashboard, console and controls are the best Buick has ever built. Among the options are a power sliding sunroof, heated cloth or leather front seats, steering-wheel-mounted audio and climate controls and numerous audio-system upgrades, while decidedly non-Buick-like choices include heated and ventilated leather seats and dual rear DVD screens for passengers. The well-equipped base model uses 17-inch wheels, but both 18-inch and 19-inch alloy wheels can be had; the top-level Touring package ups the driving experience even more with a real-time-active-dampening suspension that improves ride and handling. The LaCrosse also boasts what Buick calls QuietTuning, which is a thorough effort to reduce unwanted noise, vibration and harshness. The result is an affordable family car with the refinement of a luxury car.

Base price (incl. destination): $28,200Type: Four-door sedanBase engine (hp): 2.4 liter DOHC I4 combined with 15-kilowatt electric motor (182)Optional engine (hp): 3.6-liter DOHC V6 (303)Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheel-driveTransmission: Six-speed automaticMPG (city/hwy): 25/36 (2.4)Safety: Front, side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction controlWeight (lb.): 3,830

MAZDA

Mazda6Overall: Hard to imagine a sculpted Mazda6 fl ying under the radar, but the sultry sedan has been overshadowed by recent reveals from Hyundai and Kia. Drivetrain: Base 2.5-liter four-cylinder is the economi-cal choice; the 3.7-liter V6 from the CX-9 tall wagon is optional.

■ Despite being styled to resemble the memorable RX-8 sports car, the Mazda6 is starting to feel overwhelmed by serious competition from the Hyundai Sonata and the especially striking Kia Optima. But despite their high-profile introductions, neither Korean company has come close to matching Mazda’s innately accurate steering and suspension tuning that complements the 6’s sporty nature while creating a comfortable ride. The base engine is a 170-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder. Optional is a 3.7-liter V6 borrowed from the CX-9 tall wagon that produces 272 horses. The four-cylinder can be had with a six-speed manual transmission or optional five-speed automatic, while the V6 works exclusively with a six-speed automatic. The lineup begins with the i SV that comes with air conditioning, power windows, locks and mirrors, tilt/telescoping steering

wheel, basic audio system, 16-inch wheels and six airbags. The Sport adds automatic speed control, keyless remote entry and audio input jack for the stereo (for your portable music player), while the Touring edition bumps up the content with a keyless push-button starter, eight-way power driver’s seat, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, fancier gauges, sliding floor console armrest and 17-inch wheels. The Grand Touring induces buyers with dual-zone climate control, heated leather seats and outside mirrors, power-adjustable passenger chair, rain-sensing wipers and xenon (very bright) headlights. Buyers also get a blind-spot monitoring system that detects traffic approaching from either side of the vehicle and cautions the driver by activating a warning buzzer and flashing lights on the exterior mirror. On the option list are 18-inch wheels, a moonroof, Bose-brand audio package and a navigation system that now comes with a rear-view camera and seven-inch touch screen, to name just a few of the goodies.

Base price (incl. destination): $21,000Type: Four-door sedanBase engine (hp): 2.5-liter DOHC I4 (170)Optional engine (hp): 3.7-liter DOHC V6 (272)Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-driveTransmissions: Six-speed manual (2.5 only); fi ve-speed automatic (opt. on 2.5); six-speed automatic (3.7)Mileage (city/hwy): 21/30 (MT)Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control.

MAZDA

CX-9Overall: Transporting up to seven people in a sleek package that’s also peppy and thrifty, the CX-9 has few enemies; after updates the last two models years, the CX-9 carries over for 2012.Drivetrain: Despite weighing nearly 850 pounds more than the base (and smaller) CX-7, the 9 is light on its feet with a 273-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 that’s more effi cient than ever.

■ Mazda’s pair of on-road wagons will become a trio later in 2012 when the compact CX-5 joins the party. It’ll be just like the Three Bears, and in this case, the seven-seat CX-9 is the full-on Poppa Bear. And we’re not talking occasional seating for seven, but a full third-row seat for real, live, adult earthlings. While it would have been easy enough for Mazda to graft extra length and wheelbase to the CX-7 to create the CX-9 (and probably ruin the vehicle’s near-perfect proportions in the process) Mazda stylists were careful to make the CX-9 its own vehicle. The lines are a little less abrupt and exaggerated than those of the CX-7, and the overall look is certainly more formal. The smaller CX-7 wears a base 2.5-liter four-cylinder and a five-speed automatic transmis-

sion. By contrast, the CX-9 comes with a 273-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 with decent fuel efficiency, as high as 17/24 mpg for front-drive models. While the CX-7 and 9 are visually similar, there’s not all that much — if anything, really — that interchanges, especially when it comes to the body. However, both are available in front or optional all-wheel-drive. The CX-9 is available in Sport, Touring and Grand Touring trims with a healthy base features list that includes air conditioning, new-design 18-inch wheels and most power features. Heading up the line adds leather, power liftgate, power seats, revised 20-inch wheels, bright xenon headlamps and rain-sensing wipers.

2012 FEATURE

Everyone loves a wide smile, but the Mazda3 is returning for 2012 with a revised look and front fascia that seems slightly less extreme than before. That’s small peanuts, though, compared to the all-new engine that’s new being offered. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder uses Mazda’s new “Skyactiv” direct-gasoline-injection technology to boost both power and effi ciency. Compared to the old 2.0-liter (which carries over in base models) the Skyactiv has 155 horsepower (versus 148) and 148 pound-feet of torque (versus 135). It also wins in fuel economy too, netting 28/40 mpg with the available six-speed automatic transmission, or 27/39 with the six-speed manual. Very impressive. But Skyactiv is really more than just a powertrain upgrade as the philosophy extends to lowering weight, improving chassis stiffness and steering response. Only the Skyactiv Mazda3 is upgraded in such a manner.

If you’re not getting into the Skyactiv game, your choices consist of carryover models from 2011. The sedan is offered in i SV, i Sport and i Touring trims and runs with the same 148-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that’s connected to the fi ve-speed manual transmission or optional fi ve-speed automatic. The Mazda3 “s” models, which include “s Sport” and “s Grand Touring” sedan and wagon, have the exclusive use of a 167-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder that’s derived from the larger Mazda6 sedan. Here, your transmission picks consist of a slick-shifting six-speed manual gearbox or an optional fi ve-speed automatic.

The Mazdaspeed3 wagon is also back sporting its 263-horsepower 2.3-liter turbocharged engine. Here, drivers are treated to sportier looks, wider front fenders, hood scoop, bigger wheels and tighter seats.

The price-leader Mazda3 i SV sedan is somewhat content starved, but does include power windows and locks, six airbags, tilt/telescopic steering column and a four-speaker stereo with steering-wheel-mounted audio controls. The i Sport includes a few more goodies, but you have to move up to the i Touring for a reasonably full complement of standard equipment.

The s Sport sedans and wagons feature a wealth of features and the s Grand Touring’s list of gear is highlighted by adaptive xenon headlights (they swivel left or right as the vehicle turns), rain-sensing wipers, a 265-watt 10-speaker surround sound system, moonroof, and eight-way power heated and leather-covered sport seats.

MAZDA32012 FEATURE

The original Mazda5 that was introduced for the 2006 model year delivered plenty of style, comfort for six people and exceptional fuel economy all wrapped up in a compact package. The newly updated 2012 edition promises more of the same.

The Mazda5’s platform is based on the same one that supports the Mazda3 sedan/hatchback, except that it has been stretched by fi ve inches between the front and rear wheels to accommodate three rows of seats. Interestingly, Mazda’s mini minivan is actually a hair shorter than the Mazda3 sedan, which restricts the amount gear you can cram into the back when all three rows of seats are in use. However the highly versatile interior allows you to fold fl at either or both of the sliding and reclining second-row buckets, or the 50:50 split folding rear bench to create the exact mix of passengers and cargo.

Along with its refreshed styling, the Mazda5 now comes with a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder powerplant that’s also employed in the Mazda3 and Mazda6 passenger cars as well as the CX-7 tall wagon. For its role in the Mazda5, the 2.5 produces a peak 157 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque, up from 153 horses and 148 pound-feet of torque that the outgoing 2.3-liter generated.

The Mazda5 continues to be the only vehicle in its class that’s available with a manual gearbox. A new six-speed unit is standard on base models, while a fi ve-speed automatic is optional. Fuel economy is rated at 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway with either transmission. Along with the manual trans, the base Sport features the usual air conditioning and power-operated accessories, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, six-speaker audio system and 16-inch alloy wheels.

The mid-grade Touring adds the automatic transmission plus fog lights, rear liftgate spoiler, Bluetooth short-range wireless networking and 17-inch wheels, while the premium Grand Touring is laden with a power moonroof, leather-covered seats (heated in front), premium audio package, high-intensity-discharge headlights, rain-sensing wipers and a premium audio package. In essence, the Mazda5 is the complete package, minus the size and capacity of its much bigger competitors, of course, but also without their much higher list prices and their bigger appetites at the gas pumps.
