EAST SIDE ATHLETIC AND ACADEMIC STUDY
• District has embarked on a study to maintain and improve the community’s investment in our facility for the benefit of our students on the east side of the Winnetka Campus
• This work will strengthen our academic, athletic and wellness programs to meet current and future needs
• Continue the successful approach, design, and functionality that has occurred on the west side of the campus and through the 15-Year Plan
• Will address significant underinvestment over many years in this area of the campus, and allow us to provide our students comparable facilities and experiences to our peer high schools
• Will invest the funds the taxpayers have provided to us to improve the student experience, rather than on escalating maintenance costs

ANALYSIS PROCESS
FINDINGSFACILITY INADEQUATELY SIZED FOR STUDENTSDue to the age (1928), the limited size and aging systems and the fixed nature of the spaces, it is not possible to adapt and re-use most of the spaces.
LACK OF FLEXIBILITY AND ADAPTABILITYDoes not support multiple simultaneous practices. Stage and PESO gyms do not support high school level practices and events and are unsuitable for KW. Other spaces are not flexibile and adaptable to changing programmatic and educational needs.
ACADEMIC SPACES INADEQUATE AND ANTIQUATEDLimited classroom space is antiquated, cramped, and does not support current technology and furniture.
GATES SUPPORTS ONLY SINGLE EVENTSSpace was constructed in 1928 when the school had 1/4 of the students cur-rently enrolled. Participation at that time in KW and extracurriculars was a frac-tion of that and primarily used by boys.

FINDINGSFACILITY DOES NOT ADEQUATELY SUPPORT STRENGTH AND CONDITIONINGStrong interest in KW and 35 sports programs and the over-crowded space only supports a fraction of the students that need to use the space each day.
CRAMPED AND UNSAFE INDOOR TRACKNon-standard 4 lane track interrupted by structural columns, wall and weight cages.
SPACE NOT OPTIMAL FOR VISITORS AND THE COMMUNITYCramped and dilapidated bathrooms, corridors and hallways not suitable for 3,000 students who use the space during the school day and thousands of students and visitors during athletic events. Many areas are not accessible for those with disabilities.
MAINTENANCE COSTS SUBSTANTIALLY INCREASING10-year maintenance cost projected to total $9.2MM; improvements will not provide any direct benefits to students or programs; last area with steam boilers and no air-conditioning. Improvements must be made immediately if project does not move forward. Many have been delayed for over 25 years.

We recently completed a facility and participation survey among all CSL schools and additional comparable schools with the Chicago suburban area.
