ABOUT THE SONG:

It was a 1972 album-promoting film showing him performing the self-penned ‘Imagine’ at a white piano that provided the defining image of John Lennon’s post-Beatle solo career. ‘Imagine’ became a hit single, a legendary hymn of hope, and a lasting testament to the melodic power of simple,

rolling piano riffs linking heartfelt lyrics. ‘You may call me a dreamer’ Lennon sang - and many did - but for his generation this yearning musical fantasy came pretty close to becoming the alternative “national anthem” that co-producer Phil Spector thought it aspired to be.

HOW TO PLAY THIS SONG:

Read through these helpful tips before you begin playing to ensure smoother learning and a better performance:

1. This iconic piano part is instantly recognisable and arranged here for beginner pianists. The melody is written in a separate vocal stave so that you can sing along, or if you are feeling brave you can try to incorporate the melody into the right hand chords once you can play the song as it is written.

2. Suggested fingering has been laid out to ensure smooth ’legato’ movement between notes and to emphasise phrases. If you find the suggestions do not work well for your hands you can change them to a more comfortable option.

3. There are three verses in this song, three times through the same section. To add variety you might like to experiment with dynamics and the different feel you can create for each verse.

4. Bar 3 of the introduction has a slur to indicate that the chromatic run of beat 4 in the right hand needs to be connected through to the G of the next chord as one ‘phrase’.

5. The beginning of the score is marked with ‘con ped.’ this means ‘with pedal’ and indicates for you to use the pedal throughout as needed. The rule of thumb with pedalling is to change (take foot off the pedal and then press down again) for each new chord. This is usually once or twice a bar.

6. The pedal is particularly needed in bar 16 to hold the initial chord while your right hand plays the pattern of beats 3 and 4.

7. Bar 26 has a ‘ripple’ chord indicated with a squiggly, rippled line alongside the notes of the chord. This indicates for you to play the notes of the chord from top to bottom in succession as quick as you can. This technique imitates the rippling effect of a harp. Begin the ripple chord slightly before the beat so that the highest and last note is played on the beat. Use the sustain pedal to hold the ripple chord while your right hand continues to play the arpeggio. The same ripple chord is played again in the final bar.
