The Good ShepherdJohn 10:1–18

One time, Jesus wanted some people to know that He is the Savior God promised to send. So, He told them a story about a shepherd and some sheep.

He told them that when a shepherd goes to the sheep pen to get his flock, he stands at the gate and calls to them, “Come, sheep. Come with me.” The shepherd calls each sheep by name: “Come on, Suki. Let’s go, Stan.” The sheep recognize the shepherd’s voice, and they run to follow him. The shepherd leads the sheep to water and good grass to eat. He leads them back to the pen for a safe place to sleep. He watches over them and protects them from getting hurt.

Then Jesus said, “I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. I take good care of you the same way a good shepherd cares for his sheep. I love you so much that I will die for you.”

Jesus is our Good Shepherd too. He calls us by name in our Baptism and makes us His own. He talks to us in His Word. He takes care of us. He loves us so much that He died for us on the cross to pay for our sins. Jesus keeps us safe from our enemies—sin, death, and the devil. Someday, we will live with our Good Shepherd, Jesus, forever in heaven.

♦ Use the following times in your weekly routine to

talk about how our Good Shepherd, Jesus, pro-

vides for your family: at the grocery store, while

driving, while getting ready for bed, at school or

day care, in church.

♦ During family devotions, say the Lord’s Prayer.

Talk about how the Fourth Petition—“Give us this

day our daily bread”—is answered by our Good

Shepherd. Sing “I Am Jesus’ Little Lamb.”

♦ Put a picture of the Good Shepherd in your

child’s room. Discuss the Good Shepherd’s love

and care.

♦ Pray for those who do not know about Jesus the

Good Shepherd, that they will hear and believe.
