IN HOUSE ART LESSON Kids love to create and what better way to do that than to hold an art lesson in your home. This is perfect for rainy days, school breaks, or summer holidays. Have an instructor come to your location with all the supplies and hold an art lesson for your children and their friends. The classes available range from painting and drawing to cartooning and fine art. This is perfect for a family day as everyone will have fun creating. You can then have your own art show later.

If you don’t want to spend money on an instructor another option are videos. There are a number of videos on different subjects that can be bought at low cost. You can play them on a DVD and fill the room with art lovers.

DRAW A COMIC BOOK It doesn’t matter how professional it is just get the kids to draw a comic book. Get them some art supplies and divide them into two teams. One team creates a villain and the other team creates a hero. There can be more than one if they choose. Have them make up a story based on their characters and let them draw it out from what interests them. Who cares if its stick figures, it helps them think which makes them more creative. Why not get the whole family involved. Assign one person to right the words, another to assemble the pages and so on. !The Creativity of Art is a great way to engage the whole family and have kids produce cool work from their imagination.

NATURE HIKE Do you or your kids ever really see nature. Why not take a family nature hike, but instead of just trotting through the forest imagine that you are in a fantasy land such as Harry Potter. Try to find places that would be used as homes for strange creatures. Take a along a camera and take pictures of cool looking hideouts in trees and more. You can then take the pictures and create a story based upon the pictures you took. It may be the best day in the woods you have ever spent.

ANIMAL ANTICS Animal Antics is a fun day for everyone in the family. Take the family to a place where you can find many animals, it could be a park, an animal shelter, a zoo, anywhere animals will be. Take a walk around and try to find as many animals that you can find doing humorous things. They may be just sleeping upside down and so on. Take a camera and when you return home create a small scrap book adding funny captions to the pictures. You’ll have something to laugh about later.

COMIC BOOK DAY Spend a day as a family visiting cool comic book shops. Many times they are

having Pokemon tournaments and other events that the family can get involved with. Let the kids browse at their own pace and teach them about comic books and where the different heroes came from.

SUPERHERO DAY A great addition to Comic Book Day is to have superhero day. Let the kids dress up as their favourite superhero and create their own movie. You can film them with a video camera as they act out their favourite story line. Can’t think of a story line? Why not buy a comic book and have them recreate it with their own voices. !

With kids imagination is the key to keeping them entertained.

FIND YOUR PASSION A great way to spend a day is to find something that interest the family as a whole. Let say you wanted to know how trains work? Then why not take a trip to a museum and check out trains or go to the local model train club and talk with the people working there and find out about trains.

CAMPING NIGHT IN A LOST LAND This certainly a summer idea but what if family went camping for an evening, even if it is in the backyard. In addition to just good old camping memories the kids can pretend they are in a lost land. They can do walks and trails for research, look for treasure and more. If you really want to hike it up a notch try burying something and have them find it like a traditional treasure hunt.

CREATE YOUR OWN BOARD GAME OR COLOURING BOOK

Get a large sheet of paper or cardboard and create your own board game. Buy some dice or and game men and create a board game based on your own experience. Make the game on things you like or know like school, hobbies etc. Draw out a game board based on your idea with crayons or markers and voila you have your own game. Make up rules that are fun for everyone and you will have an afternoon of fun. !

If you just like to colour then making your own colouring book is really cool. Find pictures you like or if you are good at drawing draw your own. Use tracing paper and trace the picture you like on to blank piece of paper. Outline the pictures with a marker and you will have created your own colouring book. Now you just have to get out your crayons and colour it in. !

The creativity is the part that matters.

VACATION SCRAP BOOK If you are getting ready to go on vacation then either create a family scrap book or have each person do their own. Buy a sketch book with blank pages and have each member collect things of interest to them such as tickets, postcards, photos and more. Each day have the kids create a comic page of the days events and then glue in any collectables they picked up. This turns out really cool. They can add anything they want and they will have a nice journal and memory of the family vacation. !!!

HIRE A CARICATURE ARTIST A caricature artist is great entertainment at any event that involves people. Having an outdoor birthday party for instance why not have a barbecue, let the kids play outside, and then have a caricature artist come over and draw the kids doing their favourite sport or hobby. To kick it up a notch why not theme the event so that the party is a whopping success.

ABOUT BRUCE Well, there you have it. Twelve things that are fairly low cost to do as a family. To give you a little insight about me, I am a caricature artist, cartoonist, and illustrator. I teach art at many institutions around Southern Ontario such as the public libraries and art societies. I do offer private and in-home lessons in cartooning, painting, and more.
