PART 1
1. THE PRODUCT
a. Use of the Product.
Medal ribbons are decorative woven ribbons. The different patterns distinguish the various awards and are worn on the left breast, in sequence, with the senior ribbon nearest the lapel.
Figure 1 shows the medal ribbons being worn in rows for normal duties and complete with medals for ceremonial duties.
“The object of giving medals, stars and ribbons is to give pride and pleasure to those who have deserved them.”
Winston Churchill (Prime Minister) – 22 March 1944

3. PRODUCT DESIGN
a. Product Description A medal ribbon is a woven narrow fabric with selvedges. Designs vary according to the award, but vertical stripes (warp direction) are the most common.
TABLE 4 – PRODUCT COMPONENTS
4.1 Yarns & Threads
1. Warp yarns - Unless otherwise defined in the data sheets, the ribbons shall be woven from continuous multi- filament viscose or nylon warp yarns. Type 1 Ribbons - Nominal 2 fold 67 decitex (2 fold 149Nm Metric), Type 2 Ribbons - Nominal 2 fold 110 decitex (2 fold 91Nm Metric).
2. Weft yarns may be continuous multi-filament viscose, 2 fold cotton or 2 fold cotton/viscose blend, or an approved alternative
3. Locking (catch) threads – continuous multi filament polyester, or an approved alternative
4. The contractor is responsible for using such counts or thicknesses of yarns as will produce a medal ribbon to match the standard patterns
5. All coloured yarns used in the manufacture of these items are to be of equal quality to those used in the standard pattern, and meet the test requirements of: Table 6 colour fastness. The warp and weft yarns are to be coloured, such that, when woven, they produce shades which closely match the standard pattern. In some cases it will be acceptable to use alternating pairs of warp threads of different shades in order to produce a good colour match.

TABLE 5 – PRODUCT CONSTRUCTION
5.1 Weaving 1. All ribbons for which the Standard Patterns lie within the range 30 – 34mm shall be woven at 32mm; other ribbons shall be manufactured to the width of the respective Standard Patterns
2. Use Type 1 or Type 2 ribbon to best match that of the finish required of the Standard Pattern.
3. The ribbons shall be uniformly woven, free from defects and identical in design and weave to the relevant Standard Pattern. Selvedges shall be firm, straight and constructed as in the Standard Pattern
4. The warp yarns shall adequately cover the weft and on handling the completed ribbon, there shall be no slippage of warp to expose the weft
5. If the ribbon is woven on a shuttleless loom, the number of picks per cm specified in Table 7 shall be doubled, with two picks weaving as one and with a corresponding halving of the mass per unit length of the weft yarns. The picks shall be interlocked at or near the selvedge by means of additional locking (catch) thread; the mode of interlacing these with the weft yarn shall be such that locking (catch) threads cannot be pulled out of the body of the ribbon and continuous unravelling of the selvedge cannot occur in the event of a breakdown of the locking (catch) threads
6. The physical properties of the ribbons shall conform to the requirements of Table 7
5.2 Plain Weave Structure

X denotes warp lifted
5.3 Finishing The shade, finish and overall appearance shall be uniform throughout to match the appropriate Standard Pattern, with colour fastness ratings as specified in Table 6
