http://www.city.yokohama.lg.jp/naka/english/ No. 106 August 1 - September 30, 2009 New landmarks have appeared in Naka Ward this year — Zou-no-Hana Park, Yokohama Marine Tower and America Hill Park. All are symbols of the history of Naka Ward, Yokohama and they have been established or refurbished for the 150th anniversary of the opening of Yokohama Port. Why not enjoy the atmosphere and history of the opening of Yokohama Port by visiting these locations during EXPO Y150? Of course, these sights are also great places to visit with friends and family and from which to enjoy the beautiful nightview of Yokohama. Zou-no-Hana Park The Zou-no-Hana district between the Red Brick Warehouse Park and Yamashita Park was reborn as the Zou-no-Hana Park, and the park opened on June 2 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Yokohama Port Opening. Zou-no-Hana is a breakwater that extends from the Osanbashi Yokohama International Passenger Terminal to the Red Brick Warehouse Park, and when viewed from above, the breakwater looks like the trunk of an elephant (Zou-no-Hana), hence its name. It was originally built as two breakwaters in a straight line when Yokohama Port was opened in 1859, with one being called the East Breakwater (England Breakwater) and the other the West Breakwater (Customs Breakwater), but in 1867 the shape of the East Break- water was changed into a curve and over time it came to be called the “Elephant’s Trunk” because of its shape. Yokohama City is utilizing the historic and symbolic value of the district to recount the history of the port opening and thus, established the Zou-no- Hana Park with a plaza and green areas to create a lively place for interact- ing. The park offers excellent views of the Bay Bridge and Marine Tower and also serves as a launching point for passenger ships and pleasure boats. Yokohama Marine Tower Yokohama Marine Tower was constructed in 1961 as a monument symbolizing Yokohama Port, in commemora- tion of the 100th anniversary of the Port Opening. It also functioned as a lighthouse and was popular as an observa- tion tower, but it was temporarily closed at the end of 2006 and then reopened on May 23 of this year after the exterior had been refurbished and the interior remodeled. The observation area is on the 29th and 30th floors, with part of the 29th floor being made of glass to enable people look down to the ground. There is also an “Images of Yokohama” exhibition featuring images and historic photographs and paintings of the city as seen from Marine Tower, that introduce the history of Yokohama, as well as a wedding hall, restaurant, café, bar and other facilities. The renovated Marine Tower with its new silver and brown-olive color scheme not only offers one of the best views of Yokohama but will become loved even more as a symbolic monument of the Port of Yokohama, conveying both the nostalgic past and fascinating future. CITYNET Yokohama Congress 2009– Harmonious Cities for Our Future –

Due to the hot and humid climate that bacteria thrive in, food poisoning is a common health issue during summer in Japan.Tips for preventing food poisoning at home: 1. When buying food ・Meat and sh should be packed in a plastic bag separately from other food. Keep

fresh food cool with ice or refrigerants.2. When keeping food at home ・Quickly put the food in a refrigerator or freezer keeping a proper storage capacity

at about 70%, a refrigerator temperature of 10°C or lower, and a freezer tempera-ture of –15°C or lower.

3. Preparation of food before cooking ・Wash your hands. ・Wash food if it is washable. ・Carefully wash and pour hot water over the cutting board after cutting fresh meat

or sh. ・Use a refrigerator or microwave to thaw frozen food. Thawing at room tempera-

ture may allow bacteria to grow.

4. Now, let’s start cooking! ・Cook thoroughly (through the center of the food). ・When heating in a microwave, use a container and lid specially made for

microwave ovens. If it seems to take time to transmit heat, stir the food.5. Let’s eat! ・Wash your hands again before eating. ・Children and the elderly are recommended to eat cooked food. Physically

weak people should avoid raw meat and sh.

◆Try not to leave cooked food overnight. ・If you still have leftovers, cool them right away in a refrigerator or freezer

using clean instruments or containers. ・If you suspect the food may not be fresh, throw it away.

If you think you might have food poisoning, consult a doctor of internal medicine or pediatrics as soon as possible.Inquiries: Food Sanitation Section, Tel: 224-8337 (in Japanese)
