Το a/an είναι αόριστο άρθρο και σημαίνει ένας, μία, ένα.

• Χρησιμοποιούμε an μπροστά από λέξεις που αρχίζουν από φωνήεν, δηλ. a, e, i, o και u. an actor, anelephant, an idea, an old man, an umbrella

• Χρησιμοποιούμε a μπροστά από λέξεις που αρχίζουν από σύμφωνο. ateacher, abook, achair, κλπ.

Αλλά: an hour εδώ το γράμμα h δεν προφέρεται, επομένως η λέξη αρχίζει με ήχο φωνηέντου οπότε

παίρνει ana hair εδώ το γράμμα h προφέρεται, επομένως η λέξη αρχίζει με ήχο συμφώνου οπότε παίρνει

Plurals

• Σχηματίζουμε τον πληθυντικό των περισσoτέρων ουσιαστικών προσθέτοντας απλώς ένα -s στο τέλος της λέξης. ideas, oranges, books, apples, κλπ.

• Σχηματίζουμε τον πληθυντικό των ουσιαστικών που λήγουν σε -s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x και -o, προσθέτοντας την κατάληξη -es.

bus – buses class – classes

brush – brushes sandwich – sandwiches

box – boxes potato - potatoes

Αλλά:piano – pianosradio – radios

• Σχηματίζουμε τον πληθυντικό των ουσιαστικών που λήγουν σε -y διαγράφοντας το -y και προσθέτοντας την κατάληξη -ies. baby – babies party – parties lorry – lorries

• Σχηματίζουμε τον πληθυντικό των ουσιαστικών που λήγουν σε -f/-fe διαγράφοντας το -f /-fe και προσθέτοντας την κατάληξη -ves. wolf – wolves knife – knives

Αλλά:giraffe – giraffes

Υπάρχουν όμως και κάποια ουσιαστικά που δεν ακολουθούν κανένα από αυτούς τους κανόνες αλλά σχηματίζουν τον πληθυντικό τους εντελώς διαφορετικά. Μερικά από αυτά είναι:

4Countable/uncountablenouns

Υπάρχουν δύο είδη ουσιαστικών στα αγγλικά, τα μετρήσιμα (countable) και τα μη μετρήσιμα (uncountable) ουσιαστικά.

• Τα μετρήσιμα ουσιαστικά είναι αυτά που μπορούν να μετρηθούν και έχουν πληθυντικό αριθμό. one chair – two chairs, one cat – three cats, κλπ. The cats are grey. There is one chair in the room.

• Χρησιμοποιούμε a/an με μετρήσιμα ουσιαστικά ενικού αριθμού. a dog, an elephant There is a mouse in the garden.

• Τα μη μετρήσιμα ουσιαστικά είναι αυτά που δεν μπορούν να μετρηθούν (1, �, �, κλπ.) και δεν έχουν πληθυντικό αριθμό. Το ρήμα που τα συνοδεύει είναι πάντα ενικού αριθμού. Μερικά μη μετρήσιμα ουσιαστικά είναι:

φαγητά: food, sugar, chocolate, butter, salt, pepper, spaghetti, cheese, rice, bread, fruit, κλπ.

υγρά: oil, water, milk, juice, κλπ.διάφορα: furniture, money, time, hair, weather, information

The furniture is modern. The money is in the bag.

Χρησιμοποιούμε την προστακτική (imperative) όταν θέλουμε να πούμε σε κάποιον να κάνει κάτι ή όταν θέλουμε να δώσουμε μια διαταγή, ή όταν εξηγούμε σε κάποιον πώς να κάνει κάτι, δηλαδή όταν δίνουμε οδηγίες.

• Σχηματίζουμε την προστακτική πάρα πολύ απλά χρησιμοποιώντας μόνο το ρήμα στη βασική του μορφή. Ο τύπος είναι ο ίδιος είτε απευθυνόμαστε σε έναν άνθρωπο είτε σε πολλούς. Open your books. Be quiet! Give me the money.
