Smart Appliances according to AHAM (USA) and CECED (Europe)
According to AHAM, a smart appliance is defined as: “appliances which monitor, control
and protect their electrical energy usage in response to customer needs”
Dalian, August 28-31, 2012 U – Homes - 2012
According to CECED, a smart appliance is defined as: “a household appliance that makes
use of an intelligent power management strategy to optimize the load on the power
distribution grid: it lowers energy cost (for consumer and utilities) and increases the overall
efficiency of the system”.
•AHAM Smart Grid White Paper (http://www.aham.org/ht/a/GetDocumentAction/i/44191)
smart%20appliances_rev1.pptx
Both agree that:
1. Pricing must provide incentives to manage energy use efficiently and enable
consumers to save money.
2. Communication Standards must be open, flexible, secure, and limited in number.
3. Consumer Choice & Privacy must be respected: the consumer is the decision maker!

But, the present uncertainty about standards is
slowing down the development of smart
appliances …

Smart Appliances & current Smart Plugs vs Smart Grid’s needs
benefits problems to solve
• Smart appliances contribute to
optimize the load on the power
distribution grid …
1. through a direct dialog with utilities
(Demand Side Management)
2. by reacting to grid frequency
variations (Dynamic Demand
Control)
• Smart appliances allow new
services (remote maintenance,
telecare, other web based services)
• lack of consolidated standards
• cost of connectivity
• products not yet available on the market
(uncertainty about standards and costs to
add )
• too much time (without incentives…) is
required for replacing the household
appliances present on the field
• necessity to find a way for promoting a
rapid spread of smart appliances
• Smart plugs allow energy companies to
control the power supply of household
appliances to avoid power consumption
peaks.
• Smart plugs allow consumers to
become aware of their energy use and
costs.
• Consumers and appliance manufacturers
do not like forced power interruptions for
their products.
• Most of the commercial smart plugs are
not controllable through a local network

Indesit approach to speed up the diffusion of smart appliances
Dalian, August 28-31, 2012 U – Homes - 2012
The Indesit approach is based on the following assumptions:
1. The concept of “smart appliance” must impact on the mass production
(avoid niche solutions)
2. The cost of connectivity must have a very low impact on the industrial
cost of the appliance
3. The appliance must be free from protocol constraints
According to these assumptions, Indesit has developed a
communication technology that:
1. can be used by any household appliance equipped with a digital control
system;
2. is based on the electronic resources already present in the appliance
(no cost added);
3. allows to move the “communication node” from the appliance to an
external adaptor (smart plug)

Power Modulation: a point-to-point bidirectional communication
PM = Power Modulation
Smart Plug
Smart Appliance
Wall Socket
The appliance transmits (to the
Smart Plug) 1 bit during each
mains cycle (50/60 bit/s) by
modulating the power absorbed
by one of its electric loads (lamp,
fan, motor, valve, defrosting
heaters ...).
The Smart Plug transmits (to the Appliance) 4 bits during
each mains cycle (200/240 bit/s) through small variations
(12 V pulses) of the mains voltage: the temporal distance
between such pulses and the zero-crossing point of
mains voltage contains the transmitted data.
HAN Home Local
Network
The “communication
node” is moved from the
Appliance to the Smart
Plug, which works as a
network interface.

Smart Appliances & DDC : PNNL approach
“The GFAC chip can temporarily shift
how smart appliances use power to
soften the blow for utilities during times
of peak demand on the grid.”
Pacific Northwest National Lab (PNNL) has
developed the GFA controller, a simple computer chip
that can be installed in various consumer (household)
appliances.
The GFA controller senses the grid condition by
monitoring the frequency of the system and provides
automatic response in the time of disruption.
Therefore, the GFA controller can provide demand
response capability to household appliances like
refrigerators, air conditioners, water heaters, etc.

SMART FRIDGES TO SAVE THE PLANET – DDC Technology
Indesit Company, RLtec and NPower roll out Europe’s biggest trial of smart fridges
The dynamic demand technology developed by RLtec (now Open Energi) and Indesit research
teams helps to maintain the balance between supply and demand across the national electricity grid.
From 2010 and through 2011, up to 1,200 UK NPower customers was supplied with Indesit Company
dynamic demand fridges and fridge freezers, free of charge, in what will be world’s first residential test
of the technology.
Please watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZBAi5id5h0
Dalian, August 28-31, 2012 U – Homes - 2012
Indesit does not use an
external device like the GFA
controller, but implements
the DDC function directly
inside the control system of
the fridge (no added cost!)
