What are some of the business benefits that United Technologies will gain from the consolidation of its computer systems, data centers, software, and help centers? What limitations there might be?

The business benefits that UTC will gain due toConsolidation of total IT systems are as follows-

1. Lower maintenance cost due lesser number of systems.2. Higher operational efficiency due to standardized and integrated systems.3. Data redundancy is greatly reduced.4. Lesser number of software requirement.

The limitations of the consolidation process might be as follows-1. The cost incurred to consolidate the whole IT system is high.

2. The replacement of older systems will take time.

3. Business process may have to changed to support consolidation.

4. Employees may have to trained to work on the new consolidated system.

What are the business benefits of standardizing on selected

models from one manufacturer of desktop and laptop PCs as

UTC did with Dell and Kodak did with IBM? What limitations

might there be?The business benefits of standardizing on selected models from one manufacturer are-1. The cost of change over from old PCs and laptops are low.2. Strategic alliance with the manufacturer is possible.3. Discounts due to bulk ordering can be availed.4. Standardized PCs and Laptops contribute in reduced labour costs and training costs.

The limitations of such moves are1. The business may loose its bargaining

power with time.

2. The advantages offered by other PCs and Laptops are lost.

3. The Manufacturer may take the advantage of being the sole supplier of the PCs and Laptops.

4. if there is conflict with the manufacturer, the change over cost is high.

What are the business benefits of UTC’s policy of “Locking

Down” its new Dell PCs so employees cant download other

software from the internet? Do you agree with this policy? Why

or why not?

The business opportunities of UTC’s “Locking down” policy are-1. The IT systems are more secure.2. The employees will not waste time downloading

irrelevant software.3. The wastage of company resources is being avoided.4. The resources like power, infrastructure, time will not

be wasted.

We do agree with the policy because of the policy has the above mentioned business benefits.

When the large corporations like United technologies Corp. go for complete

consolidation of its IT systems, there are a host of business opportunities

and benefits

The process of standardizing the IT hardware from one manufacturer on

selected model will help in increasing the productivity and reduces the

operational cost.
