My Dream Is YoursThis collection is aimed firmly at “DreamyRomantics”, and that might have been a better titlebecause it is probably an accurate description ofmost, if not all, of the music. There are times whenall of us just want to relax and allow pleasant,tuneful and relaxing melodies to soothe away thecares of the day: to use the current parlance – to‘chill out’. Hopefully the orchestras of light musicmasters such as Percy Faith, Robert Farnon, DavidRose, Mantovani, Paul Weston and GeorgeMelachrino will apply their usual magic. But somenew names to the ‘Guild family of conductors’ canbe spotted this time, and it is good to welcomeAmericans Archie Bleyer and Carl Cotner, plusParisian Armand Bernard and that British LightMusic Master Max Jaffa, whose famous Trio (withcellist Reginald Kilbey and pianist Jack Byfield)was a permanent feature of the music scene in theUK for over 30 years. Irving Berlin wrote “they saythat falling in love is wonderful” and it is to behoped that these lyrics havebeen reflected throughout all themusic on this CD. GLCD 5209

Invitation To The DanceEric Coates, the famous English composer of LightMusic, once observed: “my marches aren’tintended for marching and my waltzes aren’t meantfor waltzing”. This oft repeated quote is not anentirely accurate description of everything hecomposed, but it does indicate that marches andwaltzes (especially the latter) have providedinspiration for many composers who simplydecided that they should be listened to rather thandanced. This applies to a good number of the titleson this CD, although there are also many where theintention is definitely in favour of activeparticipation, rather than purely passive listening. Itwill also be noted that a few numbers are notstrictly dances, but somewhere in their titles theword ‘dance’ or ‘dancing’ appears, clearlysuggesting what the composer had in mind.Tripping the ‘light fantastic’ are some of theworld’s finest light orchestras, such as Dolf van derLinden, Morton Gould, David Rose, Percy Faith,Werner Müller and - playing thetitle music - Mantovani.
