New Publication Available for Subscription Correspondence Alban Berg – Helene Berg Complete Critical Edition with commentary From Music Collection of the Austrian National Library Edited by Herwig Knaus and Thomas Leibnitz Volume I 1900–1911 Volume II 1912–1922 Volume III 1923–1935 Date of publication: 2012/14 FLORIAN NOETZEL VERLAG HEINRICHSHOFEN-BÜCHER P.O.B. 1443 · · · D-26353 Wilhelmshaven, Germany Telefon 0[049]4421 · 43003 – Telefax 0[049]4421 · 42985 e-mail: [email protected] Alban Berg [9 February 1885, Vienna – 24 December 1935, Vienna] is well-known as an important representative of the Second Vienna-School, as well as for his creating of the Music of the 20 th Century. His works include compositions for music-theatre [Wozzeck, Berlin 1925 and Lulu, Zurich 1937], orchestra and chamber music as well as vocal music. While alive, his compositions met with controversy and were intensely discussed and reviewed. For example, the first performance of Five Songs for Orchestra (Fünf Orchesterlieder ), 1913, was no less than scandalous to the music world. However, for many years now, his music is still fascinating to listeners and his works are considered part of the Classical Modernism movement. This Critical Edition of three volumes contains, for the first time, an unabridged, urtext version of the composer’s correspondence with his wife Helene Berg [née Nahowski]. Numerous pull-outs of personal documents accompany the authentically reproduced original texts of the letters (as compared to the small edition of the Berg’s correspondence published in 1965, which Helene Berg extensively edited from the original texts) and shows several new insights into the life and work of Alban Berg. The editors’ important explanations and commentary give the reader a better understanding of the social and cultural situation in Vienna at the beginning of the 20 th century. Orderform I[We] hereby order set[s] of the complete edition Correspondence Alban Berg – Helene Berg Complete Critical edition with commentary Edited by Herwig Knaus and Thomas Leibnitz Volume I–III with retail price of 198 ($ ca. 258) for each volume BEFORE March 31, 2012 Please send the following separate volumes: Alban Berg, Handwritten Letters, Exposes and Notes – ISBN 3-7959-0839-6 Alban Berg, Correspondence written by Typewriter and Hand, Exposes, Sketches and Notes – ISBN 3-7959-0857-4 Alban Berg, Sketches of Correspondence, Notes and »The Bergwerk« – ISBN 3-7959-0873-6 Name/Institution: Address: Date: Signature This order can be canceled within one week with a written notice to the publisher. They then reproduced these documents into legible volumes, as original as possible, for Alban Berg’s personal style and form of writing included writing over already written words and deleting words. With the publication of these letters and personal documents, and for the first time, many important sources of musical life during the first half of the 20 th Century are now available for musical research.
