A wide variety of cathinones has appeared in ‘legal highs’ for use as recreational stimulants.

They are closely related to phenethylamines, such asmethamphetamine and Ecstasy, and can produce many of

the same psychoactive effects.

The cathinones are being sold either as named chemicals or as unnamed ingredients of products purporting to be bath salts or plant food. To avoid consumer protectionlegislation, such products are typically labelled as being ‘not for human consumption’.Analysis has shown that the active ingredients of particular products can vary over time,so users cannot predict what effects they may encounter. In addition, the potency of thedifferent cathinones varies considerably, so overdosing can easily occur. Psychoticepisodes and fatalities have been reported.

Many different, but closely related, cathinones has been identified as ingredients oflegal high products. Their nomenclature is confusing, with similar sounding trivial namesbeing used for different chemicals (mephedrone, methedrone, methylone, etc) and manycathinones being referred to by initials (MDPV, MPPP, MEC, etc). Users may employmore general terms for stimulant powders, such as ‘bath salts’ or ‘bubble’.

The examples shown below, grouped by chemical structure, have all been reported beingsold as stimulants, and reference materials for most of these cathinones are available.

New ‘legal high’ chemicals continue to appear; check our website or follow us on Twitter for news of the latest reference standards.

Unopened glass ampoules are ideal for storing volatile standards, but once opened they are no longer suitable for storage. The alternative use of screw cap bottles can result in evaporation through the thread. There is also a risk of contamination from the cap. The CERTAN® bottle is a sample container with a capillary-opening. It has been specifically developed for use with organic reference solutions. Using the CERTAN® bottle makes the concerns of storing volatile solutions a thing of the past. The bottles are available in the following sizes: 1.5 ml, 4.5 ml and 10 ml.
