Global Project Restarts Exceed $120 Billion for First-Quarter 2016

Globally Industrial Info is tracking 286 projects worth $12177 billion that previously werecanceled or placed on hold but have returned to an active status since the beginning of theyear More than 90 of these project restarts can be found in four industries--Power Metalsamp Minerals Oil amp Gas Production and Oil amp Gas Pipelines--and include some of the mosthighly anticipated ( and frequently delayed) projects in those areas

More than half of the total investment value (TIV) for the restarts can be found in the PowerIndustry in which $6388 billion worth of projects have returned to active status sinceJanuary 1 Most of these are related to restarts at nuclear power facilities with the largestbeing Dominion Resources Incorporateds (NYSED) (Richmond Virginia) $11 billion unitaddition at the North Anna station in Mineral Virginia Plans call for a GE-Hitachi EconomicSimplified Boiling Water Reactor to power a 1500-megawatt (MW) General Electric(NYSEGE) steam turbine generator But like many nuclear power projects which can takemore than a decade to simply build the unit is still in its earliest design stage and is unlikelyto begin construction before 2020 For more information see Industrial Infos project report

Nuclear projects in the US have been especially slow to come to fruition as the low price ofnatural gas has forced a reexamination of other energy sources Most of the other nuclear-related restarts can be found in India where the state-owned Nuclear Power Corporation ofIndia Limited ( Mumbai India) plans to spend $475 billion apiece on unit-constructionprojects at the Haripur station in West Bengal the Kovvada station in Andhra Pradesh andthe Mithivirdi station in Gujarat These projects still are in their preliminary design stagesand the first phase of each is not expected to begin construction until at least mid-2018

India also is where most of the Metals amp Minerals Industry restarts are located with morethan three-quarters of the $2167 billion worth that have returned to active status Thebiggest by far is JK Lakshmi Cement Limiteds (New Delhi) $6 billion cement-grindingplant in Cuttack Odisha The 15 million-ton-per-year facility already is in the sitepreparation stage with construction kickoff expected in the third quarter Although Indiascement industry has been slow in recent years it is expected to pick up in the futurefollowing the governments aggressive push for infrastructure improvements For moreinformation see Industrial Infos project report

The Oil amp Gas Production Industrys $1865 billion in restarts are dominated by a singleproject INPEX Corporations (Tokyo Japan) $148 billion floating LNG plant in the Abadi GasField offshore Indonesia The project was put on hold last summer as INPEX sought abuyer for the produced gas and an extension of the contract to develop the gas field sincethen INPEX submitted a revised plan to Indonesian authorities to triple production to 7 5million tonnes per annum following the discovery of more gas reserves It has returned tothe early planning stages with construction still years away For more information seeIndustrial Infos project report

The Oil amp Gas Pipeline Industrys $843 billion in restarts is headed by South Asia GasEnterprise Private Limiteds (SAGE) (Delhi India) $4 billion subsea natural gas pipelinefrom Oman to India The proposed 1300-kilometer system will transport 11 billion cubicfeet per day Seen as an alternative to the Iran-Pakistan Peace Pipeline the SAGE pipelinehas moved in fits and starts with proposals dating back to the early 1990s But India isconsuming more natural gas than it can supply and calls for construction have only grownlouder For more information see Industrial Infos project report

More than 85 of the TIV for the project restarts--about $10494 billion--is related to 218projects that are now in the planning stages where plenty of factors could increasedecrease or eliminate the expected spending About 45 projects worth $154 billion are in

US Food amp Beverage Industry Whats Driving Investments

The outlook for the US Food amp Beverage Industry shows strong potential for capitalinvestments in the construction and expansion of manufacturing and distribution sites Theworld is growing and the industry is a leading provider and trading partner to globalmarkets It is estimated that by 2050 the world will need to produce an additional 70 of thefood produced today Food firms with an eye toward the future are investing in facilities in theUS and abroad that meet the changing demands of a diverse and rapidly growingconsumer base

The vehicles for growth in the industry over the next 12 months will come from foursegments agribusiness beverages poultry and foodservice The extent of the growth couldbe affected by the strength of the US dollar which could drag down exports

On the home front the agribusiness segment is being rallied by a call from the Middle Eastto supply grains amid regional concerns of water scarcity and food safetysecurity Theresulting action is an increase of more than $1 billion in new investments in grain storagefacilities (elevatorsexport terminals) and milling facilities to meet the increase in demand forcommodities Over the past two years US crop harvest levels were at record highs forgrains such as corn wheat and soy Food-processing firms saw a boost to their bottomlines as those commodities factored into lower input costs

The foodservice sector has been growing at a steady pace with companies like SyscoCorporation (NYSESYY) (Houston Texas) and US Foods (Rosemont Illinois) both reportingstrong results for 2015 despite a failed attempt to merge As an integral part of themanufacturer-to-end user supply chain in some aspects the performance of the sector canbe viewed as a barometer for the health of the overall industry The sector is a hugebenefactor of the protracted trend in falling oil prices which bodes well for consumers byspending less on fuel for their cars or homes and allowing them to spend more eatingaway from home

Beverage Business Blossoms

Also underpinning the bullish outlook is the growth of the beverage segment with sectorssuch as craft brewing and spirit distilleries delivering double-digit growth The craft segmentis now mainstream and has attracted attention from some of the larger traditional brewers

Acquisition activity is on the rise and is a catalyst for new investments in facilities andequipment as a way to expand the offering of the more seasoned brews On the heels of a$600 million-plus wave of expansion projects (2014-2015) wine and spirits distilleries haveopened another round of capital investments starting with a $140 million plan for 2016 byJack Daniels a subsidiary of Brown-Forman Corporation (NYSEBFA) More of Americaspremium spirits are gaining market share in international marketsbut Meats are Mixed

Investments in the meat and poultry sector continue to be a mix of feast and famine On thebeef side capital expenditures are lean due to issues ranging from cattle suppliesprices toreduced consumption in domestic and export markets

Meanwhile the poultry segment long the protein of choice for many consumers has seen arun up in project spending--at all levels from the feed mill growing facilities andslaughtering and processing Industrial Info is currently tracking more than $14 billion inproject expenditures for the segment

US Sees 10 Nuclear Plant Outages Planned for Second-Quarter2016

Industrial Info is currently tracking 10 planned nuclear refueling outages in the US valued at$222 million that are scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2016

The four market regions leading the nuclear maintenance in the US are the Great Lakeswith two projects worth $56 million the Northeast with two projects worth $32 million theRocky Mountains with one project worth $25 million and the West Coast with one projectworth $25 million

Nuclear outages typically begin every spring and fall and contract out an average of 700 to2000 additional personnel in order to complete thousands of maintenance tasks at eachplant The contracted nuclear maintenance workers must complete the required tasksduring the 4-8 week outage and work 12-hour shifts for the plant to be able to come back online in order to generate power to the grid during the summer months Maintenance workerstravel all over the country spending weeks and months away from their families and worklong hours during these refuel outages security requirements to do this type of work arerigorous due to the proximity to nuclear fuel and technology

Maintenance workers also must wear transmitting and extremity dosimeters that measurethe amount of radiation exposure received or cumulative dose this is monitored by adesignated radiation professional who is in constant radio contact with personnel

The main purpose of the refueling outage is to replace the older fuel rods in the reactor withnew fuel rods but during this time thousands of smaller maintenance tasks will beperformed such as replacement and testing of equipment like level and pressure gauges aswell as replacement or maintenance on pumps valves and controls that cannot be donewhen the unit is operational

In addition Industrial Info is tracking two nuclear outages in Canada scheduled to start in thesecond quarter of 2016 worth $35 million For more information on the nuclear situation inCanada see February 29 2016 article Canadian Nuclear Units will be Overhauled at aCost Approaching $20 Billion

The survey report indicates anxiety over the faltering global business climate according toa statement by NAM In fact more than 70 of respondents felt that the US FederalReserve should wait until the economy improves before considering additional rate hikesFederal Reserve officials are scheduled to meet this week to decide whether to raiseinterest rates

The expected 03 drop in capital investments over the next 12 months contrasts with anexpected increase of 01 in the associations survey results three months earlier This wasthe first negative reading for the measure since December 2012 according to theassociation

Smaller manufacturers were looking at reducing their capital spending plans more thanlarger manufacturers (those with 500 or more employees) Small and medium sizedcompanies predicted a decrease of 04 in capital investments while large entitiespredicted spending growth of 03 Among all firms almost 30 expect capitalexpenditures to decline over the next year with 141 predicting a decrease of more than10 according to the survey report

NAMs overall Manufacturing Outlook Index was 386 down from 407 in December In thesurvey 566 of manufacturers indicated they were either somewhat or very positive abouttheir own companys outlook representing the fifth consecutive lowering in quarterlysentiment down from 912 in the fourth-quarter of 2014 Larger manufacturers who aremore likely to be engaged in international trade were the least upbeat according to theassociation

The Institute for Supply Managements (ISM) latest Report on Business indicates economicactivity in the manufacturing sector contracted in February for the fifth consecutive month TheISMs Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) was 495 which is up by 13 percentage points fromthe January reading but still indicative of a contraction
