Pioneer Projects are collaboration projects formed, led and run by participant organisations of the New Plastics Economy Initiative.
Pioneer Projects bring together expertise from across the plastic packaging value chain to address questions that one organisation cannot solve in isolation.
The New Plastics Economy Initiative is a 3-year initiative led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, aiming to build momentum towards a plastics system that works. Applying the principles of the circular economy, it brings together key stakeholders to rethink and redesign the future of plastics, starting with packaging.
Verstraete IML is an active member of the New Plastics Economy Initiative

Pioneer Project Holy Grail
2 technology routes: Tracers and Digital Watermarks (DW)
Packaging industry needs NON-permanent technology
Public workshop (2017) to identify top 5 needs:
• Distinct food from non-food grade bottles (current PET need)
• Recyclable vs compostable packaging
• Shrink sleeved PET bottles identification
• New material introductions
• Mono vs multi material thermoform and film
Demo runs , proof of concept
White paper, May 2019

Publicly-known Tracer systems
Markers with UV fluorescence (UV Led excitation and visible detection)PRISM, Polymark, ErgisMark• Retrofit existing NIR sorter• Multiple codes possible (3 markers = 7 codes per plastic-PRISM)
Markers with UV fluorescence (UV Laser excitation (high energy) and visible detection)Polysecure and Tracing Technologies• New machines required• Permanent
DNA markers• Strong anti-fraud features with both systems• Not designed for MRF sorting

Digital Watermarks Results
All packaging successfully tested @ 3m/s
Both printed and engraved DW’s can be scanned
Yield up to 95% under perfect light conditions and single variable test
X/Y coordinates are logged
Verstraete in mould labels17
Digital Watermarks Next steps
• higher conveyer speed testing, 4m/s and blow out
• requires improved lighting conditions
• Mix with standard waste @ Tomra: sort out marked samples
• Industrial trials in commercial MRF (yield/purities/…)
• Final proof of concept April 2019

DW: the barcode of everything
Digital watermark V7= EAN code + Extra digits for sorting
Extra digits = E.g. recycling passport + Brand owner + converter + …
Digimarc watermark is a GS1-acknowledged symbology (standardization!)

Global Commitment
• Eliminate problematic or unnecessary plastic packaging and move from single-sue to reuse packaging models
• Innovate to ensure 100% of plastic packaging can be easily and safely reused, recycled or composted by 2025
• Circulate the plastic produced, by significantly increasing the amounts of plastic reused or recycled and made into new packaging or products

Global Commitment
Our commitment towards 2025
We will have a zero % of industrial plastic waste ending up in the environment or in landfills.
All our products, seen as part of the final packaging will not hinder the final package to be 100% recyclable, reusable or compostable.
We will allocate the necessary R&D resources towards even more sustainable and circular products
We continue to work collaboratively across the plastic value chain to ensure that plastic packaging is sorted and recycled in practice and at scale
