Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are known to play a critical role in normal skin function and appearance

This is due to the fact that they give rise to potent signaling molecules, called eicosanoid, which influence

the inflammatory response in skin.

They are involved in the synthesis of the PGE3 prostaglandins which regulate the inflammatory response

and they are believed to help reduce several inflammatory related disorders from which the body suffers,

including skin rashes and redness.

That is why providing Omega 3 essential fatty acids to the skin is especially beneficial for skins suffering

from blemishes or redness.

Omega 6 Essential Fatty Acids

Omega-6 essential fatty acids are known to help to reduce TEWL (Trans Epidermal Water Loss) and are

required for skin barrier function and structural integrity of the skin.

Moreover, Linoleic Acid, an omega 6 fatty acid has be found to plays a significant role in the skin. It is the

most abundant fatty acid in the epidermis . It is also the precursor to ceramides a major component of the

extracellular lipid matrix that forms the stratum corneum permeability barrier.

Linoleic Acid and derivatives play a central role in the structure and function of the stratum corneum

permeability barrier, defects of which are most notable in atopic dermatitis.

In dry skin it strengthens the lipid barrier of epidermis, protects against trans epidermal loss of water and

normalizes the skin metabolism.

In persons with acne skin, a decrease in Linoleic Acid content in sebum is observed, which leads to

blocked pores and formation of comedos and eczemas.

The use of linoleic acid for oily skin and problematic skin care leads to improvement of the work of

sebaceous glands, unblocking of pores and decrease in the number of comedos.

Omega 9 Fatty Acids

Omega 9 fatty acids are known to restore suppleness and elasticity to the skin. More specifically, Oleic Acid

is reported as being a good skin softener.

That’s why the use of Omega 9 fatty acids on the skin is recommended for keeping normal skin healthy and

soft.

Phytosterols

Phytosterols, or plant sterols, are compounds that occur naturally and bear close structural resemblance to

cholesterol and sterols found in the skin.

Phytosterols are proposed to have a wide spectrum of biological effects including anti-inflammatory, anti-

oxidative, and anti-carcinogenic activities.

It has been reported, that a topical application of a cream containing phytosterols during 10 days showed

anti-aging benefits compared to placebo. It showed not only that phytosterols stopped the slow-down of

collagen production that can be caused by the sun, but that it also actually encouraged new collagen

production.

Phytosterols also exert positive results on skin repair. In fact, three days after tape stripping, the sites

treated with a formulation containing phytosterols showed an appreciable recovery of barrier function

compared to those treated with a vehicle control without phytosterols.

Olive Oil Unsaponifiables contain high amounts of squalene. This biomimetic ingredient is a natural
