St. Catherine of Siena, a laywoman associated with the Dominican Order, was a Scholastic philosopher, and theologian who had a great influence on the Catholic Church. She is declared a saint and a doctor of the Church.

Pope Pius V, born Antonio Ghislieri, was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from January 8, 1566 to his death in 1572. He is venerated as a saint of the Catholic Church. He is chiefly notable for his role in the Council of Trent, the Counter-Reformation, and the standardization of the Roman rite within the Latin Church. Pius V declared Thomas Aquinas a Doctor of the Church.

St. Joseph the Worker: Joseph is a figure in the Gospels who was married to Mary, Jesus' mother, and was Jesus' legal father. Joseph is venerated as St. Joseph in the Catholic Church, Orthodox Church, Oriental Orthodox Church, Anglicanism, Lutheranism, and Methodism, and is also known as Joseph the carpenter. Some differing views are due to theological interpretations versus historical views.

St. Athanasius of Alexandria, also called Athanasius the Great, Athanasius the Confessor or, primarily in the Coptic Orthodox Church, Athanasius the Apostolic, was the 20th bishop of Alexandria. His intermittent episcopacy spanned 45 years, of which over 17 encompassed five exiles, when he was replaced on the order of four different Roman emperors. Athanasius was a Christian theologian, a Church Father, the chief defender of Trinitarianism against Arianism, and a noted Egyptian leader of the fourth century.

James, Son of Alphaeus: We know nothing of this man except his name, and, of course, the fact that Jesus chose him to be one of the 12 pillars of the New Israel, his Church. is also known as James the Lesser to avoid confusing him with James the son of Zebedee, Philip came from the same town as Peter and Andrew, Bethsaida in Galilee. Jesus called him directly, whereupon he sought out Nathanael and told him of the “one about whom Moses wrote” (Jn 1:45).

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY

Divine Mercy Sunday is celebrated on the Sunday after Easter, the Octave of Easter, observed by Roman Catholics as well as some Anglicans. It is originally based on the Catholic devotion to the Divine Mercy that Saint Faustina Kowalska reported as part of her encounter with Jesus, and is associated with special promises from Jesus and indulgences issued by the Church.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY REFLECTION April 28, 2019

While we are steeped in this natural life, it is difficult for us to come to terms with resurrected life. This was part of Thomas’ problem: he was seeking tangible proofs - seeing and touching - to come to belief, but the resurrected life of

Jesus is a new life is beyond tangible proofs. We receive this new life trough Jesus’ gift of the Holy Spirit. We know the fruit of this new life is peace and forgiveness. But how do we come to belief without seeing? Jesus’ ministry is continued in the disciples. Seeing these

works is seeing Jesus. Seeing these works brings us to belief. More importantly, our doing what Jesus did, brings us to belief. Believing isn’t seeing; it’s doing the good works of Jesus. (Living Liturgy, p.112)

OLA’S GOOD SHEPHERD MINISTRY Casserole cooking is a simple way to give of

your time and talent. This ministry provides good, hot meals to our community’s homeless and hungry men, women and children. Come to the Parish Office during

regular business hours to pick up recipes and containers. For more information contact the Parish Office.

HEALING SERVICE On the occasion of Divine Mercy Sunday, today there will be a healing service in the church at 3:00 pm. This healing service is for those who are seriously ill.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

When you feed the least of my people, you feed me - Jesus

The St. Vincent de Paul Society of OLA desperately needs volunteers 1 or 2 afternoons per month to load and stock the SVDP pantry. Please contact Deacon Maurice at 505-715-0056 if you are interested.

ATTENTION PARISHIONERS!

Please come and see the unveiling of your Church’s latest addition to her beauty - the actual full-size rendering of the original Divine Mercy portrait of Jesus. This represents the painting that was specifically dictated by our Lord to the Polish nun, Saint Faustina Kowalska. It was painted, under Sister Faustina’s direction, in Vilnius, Lithuania (at one time Poland) in 1934, hidden from the Soviets, and rediscovered in 1985. Time: 3:00 pm on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 28. Place: The gathering area, the east side of the Church.

LITURGY CORNER

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION An ancient title for this Sunday is Dominica in Albis, or “Sunday in White.” During the Easter Vigil, the newly baptized are invested with a white garment, a sign that they have put on Christ. At one time, the garments were worn for a full week of celebration and reflection, and on this Sunday the newly baptized would appear in their robes again in their new place among the faithful for Eucharist. In later centuries, the energy of new life at Easter was largely forgotten, and this Sunday was renamed “Quasimodo Sunday,” or “Low Sunday.” In recent years, with the recovery of the insight that Easter is the privileged time for celebrating and renewing baptism, there is nothing “Low” about this Sunday. At a week’s distance, the beauty and grace of our Easter celebration is sustained by joyful alleluias, the blessing and sprinkling of holy water, and the comfort of the Lord’s presence to us. He is risen, and he summons us together, opening up the scriptures for us, breaking the bread, filling us with new life.

SEEING IS BELIEVING Seeing is believing! Since cellphone screens connect us instantly to social media, live TV, and loved ones’ faces near and far, “Doubting Thomas” could be our patron saint: “Unless I see, I will not believe!” But how comforting for any of us who share Thomas’s doubt, or love “doubters” who do, to see how kindly Jesus responds. By offering the very evidence that Thomas demanded, Jesus doesn’t scold Thomas, but seems to understand such skepticism. Could Jesus have been thinking of us, who long to believe that “Jesus is risen!” but see so much suffering, and perhaps even cause some, that we wonder, how could something so wonderful be true? In today’s reading from the Acts of the Apostles, the risen Jesus’ healing love comforts through disciples who love others. In Revelation, “our brother John” doesn’t just claim he saw Jesus alive, but passes on Jesus’ life-giving words, “Do not be afraid.” Seeing Jesus in others is believing!
