  • President's ReportRick Wilderman

Last year at this time, I discussed the meaning of change, as it relates to N.O.T.C. Well, we have come full circle and here we ar again, one year later with a new fiscal year and a new board. So, without further ruminations I’ll give you the facts.

The general membership meeting was held on June 20,1996 and you electeda new Board of Directors. The officers are: Tim Jeansonne— returning Secretary, Jim Garvey- returning Treasurer, Rick Montgomery— returning Vice-President/Editor and myself, Rick Wilderman— returning President. The Board Members at large are, Don Brinkman,(Past President) Kelly Eyster— returning, Rene DeLaTour- returning, Mario Lara-return- ing, Randy Silcio, John Wall- returning, and Lynn Wilderman. Congratulations to all of you for your dedication and commitment; especially to those returning. I look forward to working with you throughout the year. Several appointments will be made by myself as necessary and I will report those to you next month after they have been made.

Additionally, the attending membership voted on , and passed 2 by-laws changes. One on dues’ and the other on check signatures. In summary, the meeting was successful and everything is in place to have a good year.

Yes, good it will be. All of us are dedicated to the core to be the best running/walking organization in the South. This can only be accomplished by better production through higher visibility, innovative venues, development of sponsor relationships and improving related associations.

There is an old saying “the only thing that stays the same is change”. And change we will, some mundane, but yet some exciting. I’m excited about the upcoming year, and I think you, the members of the N.O.T.C., will be too. We all are looking forward to a very, very good year.

    Executive Directors ReportChuck George

Our September schedule begins on the 7th with the RUN FOR RYAN. This race is our only entry to the newly formed LOUISIANA RRCA GRAND PRIX SERIES.See listing of other La. RRCA Grand Prix Series events later.Sponsored by Kenner Regional Medical Center, the 1 mile and 5K at KRMC in Kenner is very easy to get to (exit I-10 at Loyola in Kenner). The race also offers $700.00 in prize money for top 5K division winners, plenty of random awards including a color tv,Westin Canal Place hotel stay, autographed boxing gloves from heavyweight Champion Riddick Bowe. Race proceeds benefit the Laura Ryan Scholarship Fund at the LSU Medical Center School of Nursing.

The September 14th “FINISH ON T tIE FIFTY" will benefit the Leukemia Society of Louisiana. All entrants will receive tickets to the Tulane football game. The excitment of finishing in the Superdome on the 50 yard line adds to the overall flavor of this race.On September 21st, the RADIOFONE BEEPER RUN returns to it’s traditional course (1 mile and 4 miles) in City Park. This 18th Annual event marks the beginning of the NO TC’s fall season. The Radiofone t-shirt is also one of best annually. The field of runners and walkers is the best in the New Orleans area. Team divisions will be offered with male, female and racewalk- er teams competing.

The Alzheimer’s Race is scheduled for September 28th in Audubon Park. N O TC’s Paul and Joyce Stall along with Gloria Reimherr did a fantastic job of planning a first class race that bene- fitted a very worthwhile cause. Plan to attend!!!!!More Club information:

Several members recently moved on....This is not usually “written” up except that in Sara Wagner’s case she’s heading to Nepal with the Peace Corps. She noted that she’s taking her running shoes. Sara, remember you only have to outrun the other people not the Abdominable Snowman. Heard there’s alot of hill work opportunity there.

Sue and Don Provo are now in Scottsdale, Arizona. Former (Sue) NOTC Grand Prix series winner sent her new address and said to let club members (upon request) have it if they’re heading out that way.

Current NO TC Grand Prix Open Division leader Andrea Legge came up with one of the best excuses I’ve ever been given for not being able to compete for the NOTC team at the recent West End -Lakeshore Dash. She was on her honeymoon that week.

Unless you had eyeglasses on, you may not have seen the following in the Times Picayune Sports section. New American records for 5K set for both men and women. Bob Kennedy ran a 12:58.75 and Amy Rudolph ran a 14:56.04At the Peachtree 10K in Atlanta a New World 10K Road record was set of 27:04 which will after over 10 years eclipse Mark Nenow’s (USA!!!) 27:22 at the Crescent City Classic.

The USATF’s Road Running Information Center publication “On the Roads” (May 96) lists the 1995 Runners with most National rankings by state. Two NOTC members lead the Louisiana and Mississippi rankings.Susan Molloy from Slidell has 5 rankings in the womens open division. Ocean Springs’ Michelle Jones has 12 national rankings in the girls 9/10 age bracket.

NOTC member Ross Barranco is the President of the Wolverine Pacers Athletic Club in Michigan. He’s also an officer with the Michigan USATF.

The NO TC would like to welcome Ephemera at 105 Metairie Heights Road (corner of Metairie Road) as a new registration location. Owner Adrienne Lusky in addition to providing a key area for registration in the Old Metairie area has a nice store that offers collectable items and antiques.

  • Editor's Report:Rick MontgomeryYou can tell the strength of any club by the number of volunteers at any given event. If we used that rule to judge the success of the New Orleans Track Club, we are truly successful. Thanks alone can not say how much your help is appreciated. Along with the list of regular volunteers, it’s good to see members that haven’t volunteered in the past, step forward. Thanks again, we need you.

  • RACEWALKING NEWSBy Rich Smith

    "IT'S HOT JUST A WALK IM THE PARK"Hi folks, I’m a new Board M em ber & W alking

Coordinaror. I would like to take a moment to thank Rick Wilderman, N O T C members and friends for their confidence in me. Also, I would like to thank the race walk judges who have volunteered their time and expertise to better our sport. M any o f you walkers know me; for the rest, I look forward to meeting you all. Let me tell you that I’m excited about the walker community in New Orleans and the prospects for continued growth in walker participation with N O T C events.

But, let me give you a little info on me. I began race walking almost 2 years ago because my wife Christina thought it might be fun. At the time I weighed about 238 lbs., had elevated cholesterol levels and borderline high blood pressure. One might guess I didn’t burn up the course; however, I liked the race environment, met some nice people and continued. Now I’m at the point where I’m a reasonably competent club level racer that has shed 64 lbs. and the other risk factors. W hat I have gained is a network o f friends that’s second to none and a sport that I respect and enjoy, and I can stare down a doughnut and walk away.

I have shared experiences with fitness walkers and race walkers with abilities that range from “tasmanian devil” speed to “the walker who could” speed. Some always win awards and some never win awards, but all are winners in my book. Each walker aspires to quicker times, occasionally sets a “PR” , and belongs as an equal to a unique group. An English professor once told me that the single most important criteria for fiction was enjoyment. I believe that this rule holds true for walking. Now, don’t get me wrong, I am a huge advocate for the health benefits, and when the “gun” sounds I feel that my job is to pass anyone in front o f me. That being said, i f it ain’t fun, I say toss in your cards, cash in your chips and head for the ranch. So.... the goal during my tenure is to serve the interests o f the N O T C and the walkers with a good measure o f proficiency and a cup o f fun.

“TOP TEN REASONS TO WALK”(versus car/bike/jog)

    10. I bought aYugo.9. My mother-in-law likes to ride.8. Jogging bunches up my shorts.

    7. People rarely ask me for a lift home.6. My ex- is a jogger.

    5. Not having gas isn’t a problem.4. Jogging gives me a bad case o f “prickly heat.”

    3. I understand the directions.2. Most moving parts aren’t greasy.

    1. Politicians are always running for something.

To be a successful walker is a challenge; race walking requires a great deal o f concentration and coordination. While fitness walkers don’t have the rules to consider, they must also be disciplined walkers if they have personal goals. There are a few critical steps in sticking with a program: 1) enjoy your exercise regimen, 2) make a reasonable regimen with attainable goals, 3) do your workouts, but listen to your body’s requests for rest and don’t feel guilty, 4) be patient, 5) keep a journal recording your workouts and races, and 6) don’t forget to warm up and stretch.

One has to learn how to train and how to race. They are different. Conditioning to become faster/fitter requires a foundation, the process is shaped like a pyramid. The base is technique. Bad habits are hard to break and good technique can beat good strength. The next block is endurance. Training for increased endurance is essential. As the first two blocks come together the walker can begin to work on speed, then flexibility and finally strength. If you are interested in a local race walking workshop to learn or refine technique consider Lisa Pitre-Guevara’s classes. Eight weeks cost only $29.00, You can ask for information by calling 349-5000, extension 130. This column will speak in greater depth about these issues to walkers trying to hone race walking times and to others trying to tone fitness body lines; if you have suggestions, just let me know.

The next Grand prix event will be a new race sponsored by Tenant Hospital Group to be held on the Westbank on August 24th. The Zephyrs Grand Slam Race which was to be held on August 18 has been cancelled. Walker teams will again be featured at the Radiophone Beeper Run, a Grand Prix event scheduled for September 21. I f you are interested in being on a team let me know and I will put the teams together. This avoids “fast” walkers from walking o ff with the award by averaging team times to reward consistency and ensure that all walkers can be competitive.

As with any sport walking has its lore, and rockers o f the 60 ’s sang to walkers. We heard Elvis’ “Blue Suede Shoes” , Rufus Thom as’ “Walking the d o g ”, Dion’s “The Wanderer” , The Four Seasons’ “Walk like a man” & Fats Dom ino’s “Walking to New Orleans” . All were good, but my favorite was from the Ventures..... ’’Walk don’t run.”

  • From Infantry man to Acclaimed Local Hero: Jerry Smithby Stacie M. Pierce, public affairs specialist at the VA MedicalCenter, New Orleans

He slips in a quick 21-minute 5K run, recreates furniture into community theater props, spends time working at Ozanam Inn, a shelter for the homeless, and lovingly takes the role of fill-in dad or big brother at the Dryades Boys Club — oh, and he leaves for work about 6:00 a.m. and returns about 6:30 p.m. almost every day!

“It’s all in a day’s work.” he says. For Jerry Smith, an avid runner and

police officer by day at the VA Outpatient Clinic in Baton Rouge, volunteering and contributing to his community is a welcomed respite. Smith, a Vietnam veteran who spent two years in combat, knows first-hand the destruction of war, its pain and its hurt. So for him, it simply feels good to give back to his community. “That’s safe; and it doesn’t hurt. It helps people, ” he said.

Smith says that we have to make a conscience decision to set aside time every week to do something for someone else.“Life is short; we should find the time, make the time, to help out, even though we have long days, ” he said. These volunteer efforts are a way of life for Smith and have been for nearly 15 years. Smith says that volunteering and creating the props for the community theater are a way to express himself. He says that it’s his way of contributing and of saying thanks.

Smith’s peers describe him as an “exceptionally capable, trustworthy and personable individual.” He is known for his “thoughtful and positive outlook on life.” Others say he is quite modest.

However characterized, to the veterans who know him by name, to the spectators who rejoice in his theater art or to colleagues in his running club, he is a role model. In fact, it was a result of all of these selfless acts which helped light his way to becoming one of the hundreds of thousands of individuals who would carry the Olympic Flame, the most sacred symbol of the Olympic Movement.

What began as a single gesture of recognizing a colleague ended in local celebrity. Honored as one of 5,500 individuals in the region, Smith carried the historic Olympic Flame after being selected as the community volunteer hero who would light the cauldron at its stop in Louisiana’s capital city - one of only 29 U.S. capital city stops

on its journey to Atlanta.Smith, never wavering in modesty

of humility, became a celebrity over night as he greeted cheering crowds and represented the thousands of local community heroes and the efforts of VA employees in the media. The afternoon of his historic day, May23, 1996, - one that he says he’s surely never to forget and one for which he would serve his country once more - an emotional Smith reflected on his life. “Some where along the way, this is what it (wartime experience) was all about. But to get his kind of honor is, well, just hard to put into words,” he said.

After hours of anticipation, greeted by fireworks, lasers, music and thousands of cheering spectators, the Olympic Torch arrived in front of the Centroplex in Baton Rouge. It was Smith who carried the torch the final one kilometer and lit the cauldron about 9:15 p.m.

After all of the festivities and still with crowds of onlookers lingering to catch a glimpse of him or an opportunity to touch the torch, Smith’s heartfelt words of his work at the VA, his experience as a veteran and his active community volunteerism were captured by the local media in celebration of this historic, once-in-a-lifetime Olympic Torch Relay, and broadcast to thousands who, through him, felt the excitement, ecstasy and pride of America as we anticipate Atlanta ‘96.

Smith was one of more that 10,000 torchbearers who would help transport the Olympic Flame across the United States through 42 states. Smith’s historic moment also will be remembered as a significant milestone for our country, our VA Medical Center and Baton Rouge Outpatient Clinic, and, of course, for our very own Olympic Torchbearer. Along its journey, the 1996 Olympic Torch Relay will be preserved historically as the largest, the longest and the most culturally diverse Olympic Torch Relay ever with the Flame travelling by runner, bicycle, horseback, boat, plane, a 19-car train and New Orleans own streetcar. This year’s Torch Relay continued a tradition that began with the 1936 Berlin games.
