RICHARD THOMPSON
Thompson, a native Oregonian, grew up in the small
community of Dayton on his family’s farm. Like most small
town youth, Thompson was never introduced to “art”
through traditional schooling, he stumbled upon it during a
school trip up to the Seattle’s World Fair in 1962. That trip,
along with numerous coincidences, led Thompson into a
lifelong journey of painting, teaching and living throughout
America. His return to Oregon, with wife Kymberli, in 2011
led him to paint what had been engrained in his mind
since childhood, Oregon landscapes.
ART Elements Gallery was introduced to Thompson in 2012
and we were instantly drawn to his work. “We believe that
his contemporary landscapes will become an icon in the
history of Oregon art. Thompson’s vast art education,
cultural influences and personal construction of an
abstract/modern landscape of rural Oregon have led him
to develop a body of work that will leave a mark in history.
For collectors of Oregon art, his work is one you must have
in your collection,” says Loni Parrish, owner of ART Ele-
ments. Thompson’s 30 year academic career
includes teaching art and design at the prestigious Uni-
versity of Texas at Austin and dean of upstate New York’s
Alfred University. “My generation aspired to be artists and
university teachers. It allowed us to make art without bend-
ing to marketing needs or political agendas. It was a time
of increased funding for fine art education in American
universities and I was privileged and honored to be a part
of it,” says Thompson.
Thompson’s artwork has been exhibited and sold through-
out America including Texas, New Mexico, New York, Los
Angeles and has was selected for the Whitney Biennial
of American Art. Thompson is by far our most awarded
artist in the gallery, and we are proud to be exhibiting his
first solo show since his return to Oregon. We invite you to
meet Richard, see his new collection of work and join us
for an “art talk” on September 26 from 5-7 p.m. “Art Talks”
generally start around 6 p.m. at ART Elements. This is one
you certainly don’t want to miss, Richard is a wealth of art
knowledge and is happy to share his history.

ARTIST STATEMENT
In the world around me I may see a flash of color, a particular form of a tree, the sudden movement of a bird, the march of a squadron of clouds, or the pale blue vapor trail of a passing jet, and each moment or event may become the reason for a big brush stroke, the arch of a curve, a shape, a color, a line or the plan for a whole composition.
The world enters through my eye, travels back out through my hand, reformed by my brain and informed by my heart.
My paintings create the place where all this digesting comes to rest.
