Middle School News The junior high track team finally got to perform in a meet after sitting through several lightening delays at the North Col-lege Hill Invitational on April 16. Last Wednesday, the squad partici-pated in the Cincinnati Country Day Invita-tional, competing against about a dozen teams. “The CCD Invitational will be the largest meet they compete in all year, even larger than our Conference Meet,” said head coach Kevin Dunnette. Eighth grader Kyle Kellum fin-ished second in the discus with a throw of 90-0. This was the first meet he had ever competed in. Kellum also anchored the 400 meter relay which finished seventh overall. Other relay runners included seventh graders Matt Gault, Jacob Banfield, and Brody Honaker. The squad will run in the Seven Hills Invitational tomorrow (May 1) and the Mi-ami Valley Conference Meet on May 7-8 at Cincinnati Country Day.

Random Acts of Kindness The Random Acts of Kindness Award was begun three years ago to recognize those who go out of their way to do something nice for someone else. Our most recent recipients were Sen-iors Chris Kellum, Patrick Marcum, Savan-nah Marcum and Junior Clifford Butler. They were nominated by English teacher Kevin Dunnette. Students who are recognized have their photograph displayed on the bulletin board near the cafeteria entrance and can join in on the monthly pizza party.

The first of two spring Athletes of the Month were announced last week. On the varsity baseball squad, head coach Ralph Lunsford selected Junior Jacob Newton for the honor. “Jacob is a top-notch student who is always bettering himself in every way possi-ble,” said Coach Lunsford. “He is one of the finest young people I know.” On the reserve squad, head coach Fred Wilson nominated Freshman Tim Trent for the award. “Tim is a good student and has done everything asked of him,” said Coach Wilson. “He has been a versatile reserve player for us.” Head coach Amanda Mayer picked Freshman Morgan Rogers as her recipient from the varsity softball team. “Morgan’s positive attitude on and off the field allows her to continuously improve in the game of softball. She is willing to play dif-ferent positions on the field to help the team,” said Coach Mayer. “Morgan is leading the team in on-base percentage at .636 and has a batting average of .333, which is tops of any freshman on the team.” From the reserve softball team, head coach Kristen Yancey selected Freshman

Kacie Birchfield for the award. “Kacie is a very dedicated young woman. She has demonstrated this dedication through learning to pitch for our reserve team and playing any position she is asked to play for both the varsity and reserve teams,” said Coach Yancey. “Kacie practices extra hours every week in order to improve and strive for excel-lence.” Head track coach Kevin Dunnette’s recipients were Sophomore Brittany Shackelford (below) and seventh grader Brody Honaker. “The selection of Brittany and Brody was really simple,” said Coach Dunnette. “They have the best attendance at practice of all the participants on their respective teams.”

Vikings still in running for league title The boys’ varsity baseball squad has begun to play considerably better in recent weeks under head coach Ralph Lunsford and assistant coach Fred Wilson. The Vikings currently sit tied for sec-ond place in the Grey Division with a league record of 3-5. The squad is not out of the running for a second straight divisional champion-ship, but will probably need to win the re-mainder of its league games and hope that Cincinnati Country Day falters in one of its remaining league contests. The squad defeated Scarlet Division foes Cincinnati Country Day and Seven Hills this season, after going 0-5 against Scarlet teams the past two years. A second win against Seven Hills came in a non-league game as well. Seniors Nick Mellott and Chris Kellum, along with Junior Jacob Newton and Sophomore AJ Kellum, have been the

squad’s most consistent players this spring. The Vikes face a tough week, need-ing to register wins against Cincinnati Christian (Monday), Lockland (Wednesday), North College Hill (Thursday and Friday), and St. Bernard (Saturday) to keep any title hopes alive.

The Lady Vikings’ varsity softball squad, under the direction of head coach Amanda Mayer and assistant coach Kristen Yancey, continues to improve while competing in the upper tier (Scarlet Division) of the Miami Valley Confer-ence. The girls only have one senior on the squad in Shayla Hux and two juniors, Tarynn McIntyre and Poly Rosenberg. McIntyre is fighting a shoulder injury and may have to shut it down for the re-minder of the season, and Rosenberg is a foreign exchange student from Brazil who has never played softball before. Despite the lack of experienced players, the girls have worked hard in practice and it’s beginning to show in some of the girls’ most recent scores. The girls fell to Scarlet Division opponent Seven Hills 17-16 on April 15 and to Gray Division leader Lockland 25-

21 on April 22. Then last Friday, the girls were able to put it all together and pick up their first win of the season against visiting North College Hill 21-3. The girls faced Cincinnati Christian yesterday (Monday) and will play St. Ber-nard this afternoon, Seven Hills on Thurs-day, and Cincinnati Country Day on Fri-day.

Marcum trying to earn trip to State The 2013 track season is rapidly draw-ing to a close under head coach Kevin Dun-nette. The season began with Senior Patrick Marcum placing first in both the shot put (personal best 40-9 1/2) and the discus (121-9) at the Lockland Invitational on April 10. Mar-cum missed a trip to the State Meet in 2012 by six inches in the discus. Senior Clay Williams also placed sec-ond in the discus with a personal-best throw of 111-2. At the Cincinnati Country Day Invita-tional on April 13, Marcum again placed first in both the shot put (personal best 41-0 1/2) and discus (123-5). Senior Josh Bruce threw a personal best in the shot put (33-11) to finish fifth and Sophomore Brittany Shackelford

placed fourth in the discus (60-11). Marcum and Williams teamed up to finish first at the April 17 Lockland Night Re-lays, winning the event by more than forty feet at a combined 233-9 1/2. Marcum and Bruce paired up to place second in the shot put (73-6). At last Tuesday’s Seven Hills Invita-tional, Marcum placed second in the discus (134-11) and third in the shot put (personal best 41-7). Williams placed fifth in the discus (107-3), while Shackelford finished fourth in the discus (personal best 67-3). The squad is gearing up for the Clark Invitational this evening, the Miami Valley Conference Meet on May 14 and 16 at Cincin-nati Hills Christian Academy, and the District Meet May 23 and 25 at New Richmond High School.
