MEMBER OF THE YEAR
Name placed on the New Mexico Garden Clubs, Inc., plaque and
“Member of the Year” award presented by NMGC, Inc.
2016 Member of the Year
JoAnn Layden
JoAnn Layden is in garden club with both feet and then some!! She has held
offices in her local club in Angel Fire, chairmanship positions on the state level
and is the current Bird and Butterfly Chair. She has been chair or co-chair of
the Ponderosa Pines Youth Club since it began. She has a knack for
publications and authored a SCR winning membership brochure for her club, in
addition to a brochure , “Butterflies in New Mexico”, that won 1st Place at
National Garden Clubs’ convention in 2015. JoAnn and her husband have been
chairs of the Butterfly Garden at the Shuter Library in Angel Fire where they
spend tireless hours working and weeding. At last year’s dedication of the
Butterfly Garden, the Ponderosa Pines Youth Club read poems they had written
about butterflies and did an exhibit inside the library. At the Annual Angel Fire
Garden Tour, JoAnn hosted the Butterfly Garden and the youth club gave
educational tours and had a lemonade stand. And, under her guidance, they
helped with seating guests at the luncheon! Last fall, she and her husband
attended the National Butterfly Convention to further her knowledge. Due to
health issues, she built a nature trail up the small mountain behind her house,
which she shares with her community and recently did a floral arrangement for
an Angel Fire music event. If all this were not enough, she will be the District 3
Director for 2017-2018! Her club president says “it is a real pleasure to serve
with such a caring, compassionate and knowledgeable person!”

member”, according to one of her fellow garden clubbers. She celebrated her
50th year as a garden club member earlier this year!!She has a positive,
roll-with-the –punches attitude that encourages those around her, even when
mistakes are made. She knows the job description and duties of every officer in
Garden Club—from the club level up through District and State. She is very
knowledgeable and is always willing to help. She has served tirelessly,
numerous times, on the boards of her local club, as well as for district and state .
She is thoughtful and generous , not only with her time but, also, with her great
hugs and her warm, friendly smile. Above all, she is a great friend and a role

SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Recipient is chosen by the standing NMGC President
AWARD: Silver Medallion, depicting the NMGC, Inc., Seal.
This award was begun in 1990 at the 41st State Convention. Twenty-three
Silver Medallions were a gift from Dr. Thomas Todson, and were
presented to members who had made special contributions to NMGC, Inc., in
the past. Medallions for the continuation of this Special Achievement Award
from 1991 - 1999 were given by June Wood. One Gold Medallion (also donated
by Mrs. Wood) was presented at the 51st Anniversary Convention in the year
2000 to the member deemed to have done the most for NMGC, Inc., during the
years 1991 - 2000. The winner was chosen by a committee consisting of the
NMGC, Inc., President, 1st Vice President and the NMGC, Inc., Awards
Chairman.
This award continued from 2001 to 2010 through the generosity of Sue
Graves with one Silver Medallion awarded each year to a member who has
made special contributions to NMGC, Inc. Colleen Hinker has generously
continued the tradition of the Silver Medallion Award into the year 2020. This
Special Achievement Award is given at the Annual Convention.
The 2016 Silver Medallion Winner
Becky Fuller
This year’s silver medallion recipient has been a New Mexico Garden Club
member for many years. She has been involved in her club, her district and the
state for more than 17 years. She is active, dedicated and passionate about New
Mexico Garden Clubs. She has held many positions in her club, including
president. She is a past District Director, and has held positions on the state
board in the past, currently and will continue for the next board. She always
comes to the rescue of people who need help and things that need to be done.
She is always there to smile, support her fellow club district and state members
in all endeavors! She willing gives her time and experience to anyone in
need. She is generous to a fault and a large supporter of our awards. She just
can’t seem to say “No” to anyone or anything! I believe she is following in her
mother footsteps! This year’s New Mexico Garden Clubs Silver Medallion
recipient is Becky Fuller.
SCHOLARSHIP
New Mexico Garden Clubs, Inc. provides one scholarship of $2500 each
year to encourage the study of Botany, Horticulture, or related fields in a New
Mexico college/university. Approval for Scholarship to be given by the District
Directors, Scholarship Chairman, and President of NMGC, Inc.
2016 Scholarship Recipient
Katelyn Steen
Katelyn Steen is a sophomore Biology major with a minor in International
Studies at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. She hopes to pursue
a career in wildlife research and conservation in a National Park. She has
traveled or lived abroad for much of her life. These international experiences
have helped to shape her worldview on the importance of environmental
conservation. She lived in India as a child and participated in an eight week
study on health and sustainability in Peru as a high school student. As a
member of the Honors College at UNM, she has studied in Ecuador and Chili.
Fortunately, Katelyn is fluent in Spanish. She has applied for another study
abroad opportunity in the next school year which would take her to Japan. She
is a member of the Chi Omega Women’s Fraternity, is on the Dean’s list and
volunteers at the Albuquerque BioPark. Each of her recommendation letters
stressed her leadership, extreme enthusiasm and her unique insights on
whatever topic she is studying.

Sue Ferguson
Morning Garden Club
Roswell, NM
Sue has been a member of Garden Club for many years. She has been active
in all facets of Garden Club for those years. This year she has filled in, in many
areas whereever she was needed. She is knowledgeable, and readily shares her
knowledge, and physical help, in so many things. This year due to unforeseen
problems, Sue pitched in and helped with our yearbook. Sue is always active in
keeping up our many community gardens at the museum, nursing homes, and
the park gardens. In addition to being our awards chairman, Sue oversees
collections of all our recyclables. She is the chair, and the "go to" person for the
Flower Show at the Eastern New Mexico State Fair. Each year for this event she
works tirelessly, making sure everything is in the right category, tagged right,
and judged correctly.
In everything she does she takes a no nonsense approach, making sure things
are done according to the rules and regulations and right by the book. Sue has
served as an officer, both now, and in the past from the state level down to our
club. She excels in any position she holds. Sue is
soft-spoken, kind, always willing to help, but never taking any credit for the
tireless work she does. Whether, as a club member, or as a friend, as she is to
many, Sue is cherished, and indispensable.
For all the above reasons, and more, I would like to nominate Sue Ferguson
for this Member of Distinction Citation.
