Wyoming’s run defense is probably better than those teams’ but not as good as that of Fresno State, which held the Lobos to 109 yards and a 2.9-yard average per carry. If UNM can break the 300-yard barrier tonight, or come close, they’ll have a great chance to win. Defensively, the strong arm, fleet feet and improvi- sational skills of Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen could have Lobo tongues dragging in Laramie’s 7,200-foot elevation. Senior strong safety Jacob Girgle, in the absence of injured free safety Bijon Parker, will need to make good and quick decisions on whether to come up to make a tackle or stay back in coverage. Allen has been sacked 16 times, and Wyoming has had 41 tackles for loss. UNM defense (12 sacks, 36 TFLs), take note. New Mexico’s longest win streak in the series is seven (1969-75). The Lobos’ longest loss streak is also seven (1986-92). >>> UNM offensive coordinator Bob DeBesse and Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl are well acquainted. DeBesse was the O-coordinator at Sam Houston State in 2011 when Bohl’s North Dakota State Bison beat the Bearkats 17-6 for the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision national titlle. But DeBesse’s Lobos have put up 130 points the past three years in UNM victories over Bohl’s Cowboys. >>> Going back to an 8-0 loss to Albuquerque High in 1892, UNM is 7-7 in games played Oct. 28. Most recent was a 20-19 win over Colorado State in 2006. >>> Something new has been added since the last time the Lobos came to Laramie — the $44 million Mick and Susie McMurry High Altitude Performance Center, highly visible at the north end of War Memorial Stadium. The facility is still under construction, but when finished will house an expanded academic and sports- medicine centers as well as a new locker room, meeting rooms, kitchen and dining room, etc. The entire project is scheduled to be finished by summer 2018. >>> In December, Wyoming coach Craig Bohl signed a contract that would keep him in Laramie through the 2023 season. >>> Cowboys linebacker Jalen Ortiz, a transfer from UCLA, played high school football in Peoria, Ariz., but was born in Alamogordo and lived there as a child. COWBOY NOTES SCOUTING THE COWBOYS The script has been flipped in Laramie. Last season, the offense was prolific and the defense suspect. This year, the defense has been solid and the offensive anemic. On offense, most of the skill players that surrounded quarterback Josh Allen in 2016 are gone. Allen isn’t the whole show, but the offense begins and ends with him. “The quarter- back’s a bother,” said UNM safety Michael Sewell Jr. “He’s a nice, big physical body, and he’s gonna bring his ‘A’ game.” After last season, Cowboys coach Craig Bohl fired his defensive coordinator and hired Scottie Hazelton, who had worked for Bohl at North Dakota State. Lobos coach Bob Davie said he doesn’t see much difference in scheme, but said, “They really play fast, and they run to the ball. That’s not just coach speak. When you put on the tape, you see that.” DE Carl Grand- erson leads the MWC in sacks with seven. In three of their last four games, against Tulsa, Air Force and Colorado State, the Lobos have rushed for more than 300 yards. Wyoming’s run defense is probably better than those teams’ but not as good as that of Fresno State, which held the Lobos to 109 yards and a 2.9-yard average per carry. If UNM can break the 300-yard barrier tonight, or come close, they’ll have a great chance to win. Defensively, the strong arm, fleet feet and improvi-sational skills of Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen could have Lobo tongues dragging in Laramie’s 7,200-foot elevation.

SCOUTING THE LOBOS

LOBO NOTES>>> New Mexico and Wyoming first

met in football in 1930, with the Cowboys winning 19-6.

The facility is still under construction, but when finished will house an expanded academic and sports-medicine centers as well as a new locker room, meeting rooms, kitchen and dining room, etc. The entire project is scheduled to be finished by summer 2018.

>>> In December, Wyoming coach

Craig Bohl signed a contract that would keep him in Laramie through the 2023 season.

>>> Cowboys linebacker Jalen Ortiz, a transfer from UCLA, played high school football in Peoria, Ariz., but was born in Alamogordo and lived there as a child.

COWBOY NOTES

SCOUTING THE COWBOYS

The script has been flipped in Laramie. Last season, the offense was prolific and the defense suspect. This year, the defense has been solid and the offensive anemic. On offense, most of the skill players that surrounded quarterback Josh Allen in 2016 are gone. Allen isn’t the whole show, but the offense begins and ends with him. “The quarter-back’s a bother,” said UNM safety Michael Sewell Jr. When you put on the tape, you see that.” DE Carl Grand-erson leads the MWC in sacks with seven.
