The following is incomplete and needs some revision, but, in conjunction with library sources suchas Wikipedia.com and books and articles on the subject, it can be useful for the student and practitionerof the esoteric Arts and Sciences, especially astrology.

Adjectives and qualifiers:

Cytherial: of or pertaining to Venus (same as Venereal or Venerean, but to modernssounds more, ahem, polite)

Jovial: of or pertaining to Jupiter as a psychospiritual influenceJovian: of or pertaining to Jupiter as a physical Planetary entityTerrestrial: of or pertaining to Terra, i.e., Mother Earth

Aeon, Changes of(esoteric theory): The average length of an Aeon is 2,160 years, one-twelfth of theperiod over which the precession of the Earths axis of rotation goes through one complete cycle. This isbecause an Aeon corresponds to the length of time during which the Vernal Coleur the celestiallongitude, as measured against the backdrop of the heavens, of the Suns position on the first moment ofSpring each year, when He crosses the celestial equator going North on His apparent yearly round of

Earthly skies remains within one of the twelve Zodiacal Constellations. This, too, may have ageophysiological basis. According to astronomers Sallie Baliunas and Willie Soon,

. . . [Strictly] speaking, the period of the sunspot cycle is not 11 years; it variesfrom eight to 15 years. Other periods are also present, for instance the 80- to 90-yearGleissberg Cycle and a 200-year cycle. A period of roughly 2,200 years is suggested

by records of solar magnetism from the radiocarbon abundance in bristlecone-pine tree

rings that can be traced over several millenniums.

Obviously living things, e.g., bristlecone pines, react metabolically to changing strengths of the Sunselectromagnetic field. There is no reason to assume that the reaction might not also be exhibit as gross

behavior among non-sessile beings such as animals, including ourselves, on both individual andcollective levels. Therefore there is a possibility that the progression of the Aeons may be tied to thecycles of waxing and waning strength of Sols electromagnetic field and His cycles brightness associatedwith them.

Ages (astrological):

Albedo (astronomy, planetary science): See Planets, physical measures (astronomy)

Alchemy: Decomposition, recomposition (integration); mercury, salte, sulfur; the four Elements;the Black Dragon of Putrefaction; etc.

Algebra, Boolean: A notation number system which, like our normal decimal or base-10 system,employs representation of a given number by the vector sum of scalar multiples of exponential powers ofa given numerical base, of the following form:

where x is some base number, e.g., 10 (which we normally use), and the ai are members of a set ofscalars, in this case, the set of digits {0,1,. . .,9}.

But in Boolean algebra, x is equal to 2, and the ai can only take on the values {0,1}. So, asrepresented in Boolean notation, a number is a string of 1s and 0s. This is now numbers and, for thatmatter, any other kind of information are presented in a computer.

Appulse (astronomy): The near approach of one orbital body to another during a conjunction, whenthe declinations of the two are not close enough for them to form an occultation; the culmination at orcrossing of the meridian. Applied particularly to the appulse of the Moon to the Earths shadow. SeeEclipse.

Apsis, apsides (pl.) (astronomy): The points of greatest and least distance of a planet, moon, orcompanion star revolving about a primary to the latter. Perihelia, aphelia of a member of the SolarSystem; perigee, apogee

Ascendant(astrology): See entry underCusp, cusps.

Aspects: The angles which, as viewed from the surface of one or another planet, moon, or othercelestial body, the celestial bodies in its environment appear to form with one another and the body onwhose surface the observer is located. In particular, the term refers to the geometric interrelationship of

the Earth and any two other celestial bodies, as observed from the Earths surface, as these relate to ahoroscope cast for the observers position, the date, and the time of the observation.

Suppose an astrological chart has been erected to answer a question (a horary chart); to predict theoutcomes of an event (an electional chart, for timing a ceremony, ritual, etc.); or to analyze the possibleramifications of some unpredictable event, such as an earthquake, outbreak of war, etc. (an event chart).The Significator or ruler of that chart, i.e., the Planet ruling the Sign on that charts Ascendant,determines the answer to the question, consequences of the ceremony, or implications of the event

represented by that chart according to the aspects which it makes by progression to the Planets or othersensitive points in the chart. If the Significator in a horary chart makes no applying aspects to anythingof significance in that chart before leaving its Sign (or, in some cases, taking its station and goingretrograde within that Sign), or isnt within orb of application to any other body in the chart during thattime, then the Moon becomes the charts Significator.* Like transiting Saturn, the progressed Moonmoves through the sky at an average of about one degree per month. By Her progressed motion and themajor aspects She makes as long as She is still in the Sign of Her original placement in that chart, She

brings all things into manifestation.**

*In event charts, separating aspects can also be of significance.

**For horary charts, major aspects to other Planets, the Part of Fortune, and other applicable points in thechart include the conjunction, sextile, square, trine, opposition, and parallels of declination. Forevent charts, this list is expanded to include the quincunx or 150 aspect. The quincunx, sometimescalled the inconjunct (a term also used for semisextiles), isnt considered to be a major aspect inhorary charts, but as a secondary influence it is considered to be of great importance, since itsappearance in a chart is often indicative of grave illness or a disaster such as an earthquake.Quincunxes usually abound in event charts erected for disasters such as earthquakes and the outbreakof war. The geometric supplement of the quincunx, the semisextile, an angle of 30, may be ofsignificance with respect to the inception of conditions leading to injuries, disasters, ill-health, etc.See the Glossary in the Appendices to Volume I of this work for complete definitions of types ofaspects as well as separating vs. applying aspects., etc.

Major aspects are those which have major astrological effects upon the celestial bodies and the

astrological chart under consideration. They include the conjunction (0); sextile (60); square (90);trine 120); quincunx (also sometimes called inconjunct, an angle of 150); opposition (180), parallel(same declination, or distance from the celestial equator, on the same side of it), contraparallel (samedeclination, on opposite sides of the celestial equator), and occultation (conjunct and parallel each otherat the same time, so that the body nearer to the Earth eclipses the observers view of the farther one).

Minor aspects, whose effects tend to modify other things in the chart but arent themselves majorinfluences, include thesemisextile (30; sometimes also called an inconjunct),semisquare (45), quintile(72),sesquisquare (135), and others.

The aspects of significance in a horary chart, one erected to answer a question, include the parallel,*the conjunction, the sextile, the square, the trine, the opposition, and the occultation.

*The two bodies involved in a parallel may both be on the same side of the celestial equator, or onopposite sides. In either case, in horary and event charts the aspect is considered to be a parallel, andinterpreted as such.

Apartile aspect is one that is exact.Platic aspect:

If the ruler of the chart makes any major aspects by application to anything else of significance in thechart, then, should it also make any of the following aspects to other Planets or sensitive points in the

chart, the answer or testimony of the chart is modified in kind. These aspects include the semisextile (seefootnote, above), semisquare (45), and sesquisquare (135). The semisextile indicates opportunities,

potentials that can be profitably exploited, and the semisquare and sesquisquare generally indicatesources of irritations or even serious problems.

Conjunctions: Lunas conjunctions with the Sun Her New Moon phase occur only when She isbetween Earth and the Sun, on the straight line determined by the other two bodies. The conjunctions ofVenus and Mercury with the Sun are of two types: inferior conjunction, when they are between the Earthand the Sun; and superior conjunction, when the Sun is between one of them and the Earth. All other

planetary conjunctions with the Sun those of Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto takeplace only when the Sun is between the Earth and one of Them. See Light, Increasing and Decreasingin, on the geometry and astrology of those two types of conjunctions. Conjunctions and parallels signifymarriages of the influences of the two bodies involved in the aspect. Such a melding is normally benignand desirable if the Planets or points involved are benign or neutral, such as those involving Luna(neutral), Venus (benefic), Sol (usually benefic), or Jupiter (benefic), but generally malefic and harmfulwhen the Malefic Planets Mars, Saturn, Uranus, or Neptune are involved.

The influence of conjunctions and parallels (including contraparallels) depends upon the Planets orLights (Sun and Moon) involved. A conjunction or parallel with the any of the Benefics (Venus, Jupiter,the Moons North Node, the Part of Fortune, etc.) signifies favorable conditions, pleasant things, orharmony. A conjunction with any of the Malefics (Mars, Saturn, Uranus, or Neptune) signifies hardship,obstacles, unfavorable conditions, and is an ill omen. And a conjunction with the Sun, Moon, Mercury,or Pluto, the neutral bodies, has effects dependent on the chart as a whole. Finally, occultations arealways signs of ill-omen.

Sextiles and trines are soft, easy, or flowing aspects. Usually their influence is benign,signifying harmony, pleasure, ease, and favorable conditions. However, when the involve the applicationof a Malefic or a neutral Planet to a Malefic, especially when trines to Neptune are involved, they cansignify inexorable, unmitigatable doom. Trines to Neptune are often found in the charts of long-termaddicts and alcoholics, the accident-prone, masochists, and people who are frequently victimized in

certain ways. Trines make it easy to get into a pattern or cycle which is then very hard to break out of.An analogy is driving a swift, powerful car on an icy road getting onto the ice is easy, but the hard partis getting off again in one piece.

Squares, inconjuncts, oppositions, semisquares, and sesquisquares are hard aspects that frequentlyindicate irritation, friction, hindrance, barriers, disasters, failures, and hope destroyed. But sometimesthey indicate barriers that act as shields, giving protection from evil. Squares and oppositions canrepresent major obstacles to becoming addicted to some vicious drug, such as alcohol or cocaine, or mayact to protect someone from major injury or disaster by throwing up obstacles in the way of potentialcauses of the latter. These hard aspects can act like sand thrown on an icy road, preventing disastrousskids. As for oppositions, they can signify partnership instead of hostile confrontation. Their basicmeaning is that of face-to-face relationships. Such relationships are characteristic of everything fromoutright war to sex, marriage, or a good business relationship. So the effect of an opposition depends onthe context in which it operates.

The quincunx is usually prominent in charts erected for real-world events such as earthquakes and

other disasters; it is also common in charts having to do with illness or injury.Semisextiles indicate opportunities and possibilities, though without major aspects to key those inand make them readily useful, they usually come to nothing. They add momentum to whatever else is inthe chart. They can thus be very helpful to the success of the question in that way.

Partile Exact. An exact aspect.Major, minor (complete list from Donath)Applying, separating; waxing, waning (see also Luna, phases of).Superior and inferior conjunction (special case: Mercury and Venus). Inferior conjunctions of

Mercury and Venus with the Sun are interpreted as combust conditions, which are made doubly weak orunfortunate because of Their retrograde motion at such times. On the other hand, Their superior

conjunctions, when Sol is on the line determined by Her position and that of Earth, between the twoPlanets, are interpreted as fortunate conditions; They are in direct motion then, and Their influence isvery strong, the opposite of the case for Their combustion.

Full = superior conjunction = direct motion = most ritual powerNew - inferior conjunction = retrograde motion = least ritual powerInferior (new) vs. superior (full) conjunction and retrogrades, greatest elongation East (third quarter)

and West (first quarter)

Waxing -- moving from inferior to superior conjunction (not necessarily equivalent to growing inbrightness)

Waning -- moving from superior to inferior conjunction (not necessarily equivalent to lesseningbrightness)

gibbous: about halfway between superior conjunction from Sol, when He is full, and greatestelongation from Sol, at His first or third quarter

Asteroids and planetoids: the Goddess Asteroids (Pallas, Ceres, Juno, Vesta), Chiron and the otherCentaurs, Earth-crossing, Apollo asteroids, the Kuyper Belt, trans-Neptunian bodies, etc.

Astrology: Elective, mundane, horary

Astronomical Unit, or AU: Formally speaking, the distance from the Sun to a massless object in anunperturbed circular orbit that has an orbital period of 365.2568983 days, equal to 1.4959787066 x 1011m or ~ 93 million miles. Commonly the AU is taken to be the average distance of the Earth from theSun, and is the unit of distance used by planetary astronomers.

Calendars: In the West, the Gregorian calendar was substituted for the Julian calendar in 1582, toaccount for leap-years and other factors not accounted for by the latter. Great Britain, however, waiteduntil 1750 to adopt the Gregorian calendar, and put it into effect in 1752. At the same time, the

beginning of the legal year was changed from March 25 to January 1. At that time, in England as well asher colonies in America and elsewhere, 11 days were dropped from the calendar, i.e., were added toevery date in the year, so that, e.g., January 1 became January 12, etc. Subtracting this number of daysfor the calendrical ascriptions given by Crowley, the Golden Dawn, et al. for the Court Cards, which runsfrom about the 10th or 11th of one month to around the same day on the next, changes them to about the 1 stof one month to the 1st of the next i.e., to a given calendrical month, in the usual sense of the term.Thus the Knight of Wands would rule November; the Knight of Cups would rule February; the Knightof Swords rules May; and the Knight of Disks rules August.

Celestial Equator:

Centaurs, the (astronomy, astrology): Chiron, Pholus, other Centauroids

Co-rulers (astrology): Before the invention of the telescope, when only the Sun, Moon, and fiveplanets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn were known to exist by European and Near andMiddle Eastern cultures, every one of the twelve Signs of the Zodiac had only one ruler, and the five

planets each ruled two Signs (with the Sun ruling only Leo and the Moon ruling only Cancer).

When European astronomers began to discover new planets, since none of the Signs was without aruler, in order to fit the new planets in, astrologically speaking, they had to share dominion over signsalready ruled by the traditional planets. Thus Uranus became the ruler of Aquarius, the traditionaldominion of Saturn; Neptune became Lord of Pisces, the traditional dominion of Jupiter; and Pluto

became the ruler of Scorpio, the traditional dominion of Mars.Many astrologers believe that these Outer Planets have dignities in the other Signs ruled by the

planets with which they share dominion over given Signs, i.e., that Uranus also rules Capricorn,

traditionally ruled by Saturn; Neptune rules Sagittarius, traditionally ruled by Jupiter; and Pluto rulesAries, traditionally ruled by Mars. In this system, Saturn and Uranus are thus said to co-rule Capricornand Aquarius; Jupiter and Neptune co-rule Sagittarius and Pisces; and Mars and Pluto co-rule Aries andScorpio. As an added refinement to the system, Saturn rules Capricorn by day and Aquarius by night, thereverse being true for Uranus; Jupiter is the diurnal lord (see dignity (astrological)) of Sagittarius andthe nocturnal lord (see dignity (astrological)) of Pisces, the reverse being the case for Neptune; andMars is the diurnal lord of Aries and the nocturnal lord of Scorpio, the reverse of the case for Pluto.*

*In a variant of that system, Mars is the diurnal lord of Scorpio and the nocturnal lord of Aries, whilePluto rules Aries by day and Scorpio by night. There is a rather nice symmetry to this variant,assigning the diurnal dominion of Aquarius, Pisces, and Aries, and of Scorpio, Sagittarius, andCapricorn respectively to Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, and to Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, so that each setof three planets are assigned consecutive dominions in the same order as their relative distancesoutward from Sol.

More generally speaking, this system can be extended to include all the dignities, both diurnal andnocturnal, such that each pair of planets co-ruling each-others rulerships are also exalted and have theiresoteric dignities in the same Signs. For example, Mars is exalted in Sagittarius by day and in Virgo bynight, falls in Gemini by day and Pisces by night, is esoteric Lord of Capricorn by day and of Leo bynight, and has His esoteric detriment in Cancer by day and Aquarius by night; while Pluto is diurnallyexalted in Virgo and nocturnally exalted in Sagittarius, has His diurnal fall in Pisces and His nocturnalfall in Gemini, is diurnal esoteric lord of Leo and nocturnal esoteric lord of Capricorn, and has Hisdiurnal esoteric detriment in Aquarius and His nocturnal esoteric detriment in Cancer.*

In this same system, the Sun and Moon become co-rulers of Cancer and Leo, and each has its otherdignities in the same signs the other does, e.g., Luna has Her diurnal exaltation and Sol His nocturnalexaltation together in the sign Taurus, and Their corresponding fall by respectively day and night inScorpio (see previous footnote).

Finally, to date Venus, ruler of Taurus and Libra, and Mercury, ruler of Gemini and Virgo, have noco-rulers. However, to fill out the system of the astrological dignities I have postulated two hypotheticalnew planets, Persephone and Hera (see Planets (astrological)), assigning Persephone as co-ruler ofMercurys traditional dominion of Gemini and Virgo, and Hera as co-ruler of Venuss dominion ofTaurus and Libra. It is just possible that appropriate candidates for those hypothetical worlds really existamong the recently discovered trans-Neptunian bodies found in the Kuyper Belt beyond Pluto; oramong the family of asteroid/comets with highly irregular orbits lying between those of Jupiter and

Neptune, the type and first-discovered member of which is the planetoid Chiron (see Centaur(astronomical)), or in some other part of the Solar System. That, however, still remains to be seen.

Combust(astrology): A planet or the Moon is combust when it is within 8 of the Sun. Such closeproximity to Sol has an effect on the influences of Luna and the planets very similar to that of Theirplacement in the Via Combusta.

This may not apply to Mars and Pluto: some authorities find that the strength of these two planets ismarkedly increased by close proximity to the Sun, as long as They and He are within the same Sign.

Since Mars rules fiery conditions of various kinds, while Pluto rules extreme, raw power, including thethermonuclear reactions that power the Suns heart, this seems logical.

Also, in the cases of Venus and Mercury, this doesnt apply when these two planets are in superiorconjunction with Sol (see Light, increasing and decreasing in).

Cusps, House and Sign (astrology): (a) The imaginary line which separates an astrological Sign froman adjoining Sign, or a House from an adjoining one in a horoscope. (b) An indeterminate but finite,

small arc contiguous to the boundary-line between adjacent Signs or Houses, wherein there is uncertaintyas to a Planets orLights location at a particular moment, and thus ambiguity as to its influence in a

borderline relationship.The most important cusps are the Angles (see Houses), the four cardinal points in a horoscope. The

most important of these is theAscendant, the point at which the First House joins to the Twelfth House ofa horoscope, the point rising due East at the time and for the place for which that horoscope is erected;and the Midheaven (sometimes abbreviated as M.C., short for Medium Coeli), the point joining the

Ninth and Tenth Houses, which is due South. The other two Angles are the Seventh House cusp, thepoint of joining of the Sixth and Seventh Houses, orDescendant, just setting at the moment for which thechart is cast; and the Fourth House cusp, or due North point, the join of the Third and Fourth Houses. Anatal Planet is stronger when it is on a cusp than when it is in the first degree of a House; the angularcusps are the sharpest in their effects on a planetary placement. Another term for the Ascendant is theOriens; the Fourth-House cusp is sometimes called the Imum Coeli (I.C.) orNadir; the Descendant isalso referred to as the Occidens.

The Ascendant, Midheaven, Descendant, and Nadir are also called the East Horizon, the NorthVertical, the West Horizon, and the South Vertical. Aside from Sun and Moon, they are the most

powerful and important points in the horoscope. Any planets on the Angles, or within the Houses theyrepresent (the First, Fourth, Seventh, and Tenth), become immensely powerful for good or evil, accordingto Their natures and aspects to other bodies and points in the chart.

Dignity, dignities: Sign of a Planets strength. A Planet or Light is dignified in Signs over which ithas mundane or esoteric dominion, or in which it is exalted. The anti-dignities of a Planet or Light arethe Signs of its weakness, i.e., its mundane and esoteric detriments and its falls.

Hydrogen has one neutron and one electron andthus an atomic weight of a little over 1; deuterium is a form of hydrogen having one protonand one neutron (atomic weight slightly more than that of a proton) and thus an atomicweight of a little over 2; tritium, an isotope of hydrogen with two neutrons, has an atomicweight of a little over 3.

The elements

Sub-atomic particles: neutron, electron, boson, meson, photon, anti-particles, quark, etc. Theproton is the unit of atomic number and thus the chemical identity and behavior of anelement (see Quantum Mechanics)

Heliacal rising (of Stars) (astronomy, astrology):

Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram: A plot of the absolute magnitude of stars against their spectral class.Equivalently, a plot of the luminosity of stars against their surface temperature.

In the early 1900s, Ejnar Hertzsprung in Denmark and Henry Norris Russell in the United Statesindependently began to consider how the brightness of stars might be related to their spectra. In 1911,Hertzsprung plotted the apparent magnitudes of stars in several clusters against their spectral class. In1913, Russell plotted the absolute magnitudes of stars in the solar neighborhood against their spectralclass. Both astronomers were quick to emphasize the non-random patterns they saw in the arrangementof the data on these graphs. Such graphs have become extremely important in modern astronomy and aretoday called Hertzsprung-Russell diagrams.

A Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, or H-R diagram, is any graph on which a parameter measuringstellar brightness is plotted against a parameter related to a stars surface temperature. For example, theordinate of the graph may be apparent magnitude, absolute magnitude, absolute bolometric magnitude, orluminosity, the abscissa spectral class, color index, or surface temperature.

Consider the following two equivalent H-R diagrams, A and B:

A resembles Russells original graph. Each dot on it represents a star whose absolute magnitude andspectral class have been determined from observations. Most of the data lie along a broad line called theMain Sequence (cv.) that extends diagonally across the diagram. The Sun (absolute magnitude +5,spectral type G2) is a typical main sequence star. A second prominent grouping of data points representsvery large, cool stars called red giants. In the lower left corner, a third grouping identifies compact, hotstars called white dwarfs.

An H-R diagram can also be drawn by plotting the luminosity of stars against their surfacetemperatures, as shown in diagram B. Notice that temperature increases toward the left. The spectral

classes OBAFGKIM constitute a temperature sequence and the first H-R diagrams were drawn with thehot O stars on the left and the cool M stars on the right.These H-R diagrams show that the total range in stellar brightness is 27 magnitudes, corresponding

to a factor of 1011 in luminosity, and the range in the surface temperature of stars is from 2,200 K to50,000 K. The size of a star is related to both its luminosity and its surface temperature, as indicated bythe dashed lines. Most main sequence stars are roughly the same size as the sun. White dwarfs are aboutthe same size as the Earth, while red giants and supergiants can be as big as Earths orbit around the Sun.

The statistical distribution of data on an H-R diagram demonstrates that stars fainter than the Sun arefar more numerous than those brighter than the Sun. In a given volume in the solar neighborhood, about90% of the stars are main sequence stars, about 10% are white dwarfs, and about 1% are red giants orsupergiants.

The existence of three main groupings on the H-R diagram means that a typical star passes throughthree very different stages during its life. The temperature of a star changes as it evolves, enabling us to

plot the path followed by an evolving star on an H-R diagram.

The evolutionary tracks of contracting protostars show that they change rapidly as gravitationalcontraction compresses and heats their cores. When a protostars central temperature reaches severalmillion degrees, hydrogen burning begins, and the evolutionary track stops at the main sequence.Consequently, main sequence stars are comparatively young, and have hydrogen only recently ignited

burning at their cores.Pre-main sequence evolutionary tracks deposit new-born stars along the main sequence in agreement

with the mass-luminosity relation (the more massive a star is, the brighter it is). Thus the main sequenceis a sequence in mass, as well as temperature and luminosity. These tracks also show that the moremassive a star is, the more rapidly it evolves.

As a star consumes its store of hydrogen, it gradually brightens and cooler. When its supply ofhydrogen is exhausted, the stars core contracts, its atmosphere expands, and it becomes a red giant.Ageing stars spend their final years as bloated red giants.

Massive stars can end their lives with supernova explosions that leave behind neutron stars and blackholes. These are detected at non-visible wavelengths, so the H-R diagram has no relevance to the post-red giant evolution of massive stars.

A star less massive than about three solar masses can eject as much as half its mass at the end of its

life, producing a planetary nebula, i.e., a halo of gas and dust surrounding the star in question. Theexposed, burnt-out core of the star then contracts to become a white dwarf. Detailed calculations of this

process produce evolutionary tracks that rapidly take low-mass stars from the red giant region in theupper right of the H-R diagram to the white dwarf region in the lower left.

Stellar evolution calculations relate the H-R diagram to time, so that these graphs can provideinformation about the ages of stars. Such age dating is especially applicable to star clusters.

A very young cluster, such as NGC2362, consists primarily of main sequence stars. However, themore massive a star is, the more rapidly it consumes its core supply of hydrogen and becomes a red giant.Since the main sequence is a progression in stellar mass, the stars are the upper end of the main sequenceare the first to leave. As the cluster ages, its main sequence burns down like a candle as stars of

progressively decreasing mass and luminosity become red giants. For example, M67 is an old clusterbecause only those stars less massive and luminous than the Sun still remain on its main sequence.

Horizontal branch stars, stars aligned along horizontal branches jutting out from the right side of theH-R diagram, are believed to be low-mass stars that have recently ignited helium in their cores via thehelium flash. In an asymptotic red giant, helium burning occurs in a thin shell surrounding the starscenter.

Between the horizontal branch stars and the red giants is a gap. When the evolutionary track of alow-mass star takes it across this region, the star pulsates as an RR Lyrae variable.** This gap is at thelower end of the so-called instability strip, a vertical region in the middle of the H-R diagram where starsare unstable against radical oscillations. When a massive star passes through this region, it pulsates, andis called a Cepheid variable.

*A theoretically predicted event in the evolution of a lower-mass star. After the hydrogen in its core hasbeen exhausted and the star has become a red giant, the central temperature will rise to the point atwhich helium fusion suddenly begins. It is unlikely that the explosion will reach the surface of sucha star. In a more massive star, helium fusion begins gradually because of different conditions in its

core.**RR Lyrae variables are often called short-period Cepheids or cluster-type variables, which have

Cepheid-like variations in luminosity but with extremely short periods of a fraction of a day. Theserapidly pulsating stars have light curves that differ from the classical Cepheids. Most rise veryquickly to maximum brightness in only a tenth or less of their total period. Their minima arecomparatively prolonged, so that for a few hours their light remains constant. Their spectral typesrange from A to F. They are giants; those in our galaxy belong to spherical clusters

Hypernova: An exceptionally powerful supernova, possibly as the result of the collapse of anextremely large young star. Explosions a hundred times more energetic than supernovae and the possiblesource of powerful gamma ray bursts (GRB), making them the most energetic events known in theUniverse other than the Big Bang. Hypernovae were first proposed by Bohdan Paczynski of PrincetonUniversity in 1998 as a way to explain GRBs, which were initially discovered by U.S. military Velasatellites in the 1960s. With an explosion energy orders of magnitude greater than a canonical supernova,hypernovae are likely related to the formation of black holes, possibly due to the collapse of massive

stars and/or their mergers with dense, or compact, objects. This scenario has become particularlyattractive because of the evidence that GRBs appear close to massive star-forming regions where suchactivity is likely to occur. But astronomers still know little about the true nature of GRBs or hypernovae.I suspect GRBs may well be just a tip of an iceberg, as we have no clue why some explosions generateso much gamma-ray emission, Paczynski said. For example, the brightest GRB known, the recentlyobserved GRB 990123, represents more energy than any one star could produce, assuming the radiationastronomers saw left its source in all directions. One explanation for all this energy is that the radiationwas actually confined into a beam during the explosion. This concentration of energy is known as the

beaming effect, which may significantly affect the energy estimate of a GRB. For example, the brightestGRB known, the recently observed GRB 990123, represents more energy than any one star could

produce, assuming the radiation astronomers saw left its source in all directions. One explanation for allthis energy is that the radiation was actually confined into a beam during the explosion. Thisconcentration of energy is known as the beaming effect, which may significantly affect the energyestimate of a GRB. By studying remnants of GRBs or hypernovae in nearby galaxies, we can calculatetheir explosion energies without the beaming effect, Wang said. We can also examine the environmentof the explosions to infer their true nature. The environment of NGC5471B is a star-forming region.The event that produced NGC5471B, Wang said, was therefore most likely the collapse of a massive star.Indeed, M101 is one of a few nearby galaxies with vigorous ongoing star formation. This explains whyone single galaxy could contain two relatively rare hypernova remnants with ages less than about amillion years. Although a hypernova remnant may last tens of million years, it does not shine asgloriously as the initial explosion. In fact, the two hypernova remnants cannot be seen in a typical visual

picture in optical light. But they are visible in X-ray and in emission lines from some specific atomictransitions. We have used a combination of tools to uncover these remnants, said Wang, just likedoing archaeology. Wang's observations were based primarily on data from the German/US/UK jointmission ROSAT X-ray satellite, while Chu's observations were from the Hubble Space Telescope and the4-m telescope at Kitt Peak National Optical Astronomical Observatory. Hypersea: The sum total of plant, animal, protoctistan, and fungal life on land, plus any viral orbacterial symbionts or parasites living in intimate association with the tissues of these organisms. Itdoesnt include the bacterial component of the terrestrial biota that was able to survive on land before thefirst land plants appeared, and therefore doesnt include the sort of bacterial communities that flourishedthere before the invasion of their habitat by plants, animals and fungi, such as microbial mats and rockvarnish microbes.

Land biota has had to find ways to carry the sea within it and, in addition, to construct wateryconduits from point to point. To do so, this biota has evolved one entirely new kingdom of life oftremendous importance: the fungi. Without the web of fungal hyphae in forest soils there would likely

be no trees. The anastomosing (merging) habits of fungi and their unique enzymatic capabilities enablethem to surround the surfaces of tiny particles of rock, extracting crucial nutrients, and then to probe orinfest the tissues of tree rootlets to deliver those nutrients to them in exchange for carbohydratesmanufactured by the partner tree. Land organisms have necessarily evolved together as part of a greater

interconnected mass of living cells. In moving out of marine waters, complex life has taken the seabeyond the sea and folded it back inside itself to form Hypersea.Land biota may then be regarded in a new way: as an interaction of cells that is far more than just an

aggregation of organisms that succeeded independently in finding ways to live on land rather than in thesea. This concept of the Hypersea encourages us to view the mass of terrestrial organisms as ageophysical phenomenon with unique properties of mass and velocity. Hypersea, more dispersed than,say, the Alps, is far more geochemically important, for it has a far greater affect on the distribution andmovement of molecules on Earths surface. Ort-pik Cloud: The Dutch astronomer Jan Ort hypothesized that there is a more or less sphericalcloud of comets orbiting the Sun at a distance of between 30,000 and 100,000 AU. If a comet in thiscloud is perturbed for any reason, perhaps by a passing star or even a remote planetary body, it maymove in toward the Sun. If it is then perturbed by a planet usually Jupiter it may be captured and putinto a short-period orbit. Alternatively it may be expelled from the Solar System altogether, or elsesimply returns to the Ort Cloud, not to return to the inner Solar System for an immensely long span oftime. As yet, there is only rather sparse supporting evidence that such a cometary cloud exists in our

Solar System, but the theory does seem to fit the facts as we know them at present.Indeed, as our Solar System bobs up and down through the plane of the galaxy on its long, longrevolution around the galactic center, from which it lies about 20,000 light-years out, it must from time totime pass through the giant clouds of cold molecular gas that fill some areas of our galaxy, especially inits outer arms, where our own Solar System lies. In addition, it must occasionally come near enough toother stellar systems to perturb the bodies in the outer reaches of those systems, including any cometsthey might harbor there. It is therefore likely that occasionally our Sun captures comets from otherstellar systems, or from swarms of them lying within cold molecular clouds, and that these comets wouldthen join the population of comets in the Suns Ort-pik Cloud. At such times, the capture of newcomets would likely involve the jostling of comets already in orbit around the Sun by the newcomers. As

a result, some older comets would either be kicked out of the Solar System entirely by such chanceencounters, while others would thereby be batted into the inner parts of the Solar System. Progressions: Primary, secondary, others see also list given in Halloran software, other sources. Aprogression of a chart is a chart erected for a date that is as many days, months, or other time-unit (andfractions thereof) after a given birth-date and time as the age in years (and fractions thereof) of thesubject of the original chart. There are several types of progressions, the two basic ones being the

primary andsecondary.In the primary progression, first the angular distance the Sun will have moved through the Signs in

that number of days after the original time and date is calculated; then that arc is added to (or subtracted

from) every point in the chart. In effect, a primary progression is a rotation backwards or forwards of thechart relative to itself by an amount equal to the number of degrees the Sun will have moved along theEcliptic from His original position to the one on which He stood as many days (and fractions thereof)after the original date & time as actual years (and fractions thereof) have elapsed since then. The aspectswhich significant points in the progressed chart make to those in the original are then analyzed to seewhat is likely to occur within the next 12 months after the time for which the progressed chart is erected.

In the secondary progression, for a given number of years (and fractions thereof) after the originaltime and date of a given birth or event, a transit chart (what is going on in the sky at the time) for thesame number of days (and fractions thereof) after the time and date of the original chart is erected.Aspects of points in it to those in the original are then analyzed to see what they portend for the future.

Planets and points in secondary progressions are not all the same arc-length from their originalpositions, as they are in primary progressions. Both types of progression work, but a given astrologerusually finds it easier to work with one technique than with the other.

Other useful types of progression include the Lunar progression, especially useful for working withcharts pertaining to women as well as meteorological (weather) and earthquake charts, the 4 minutes onthe Midheaven per year technique of erecting a chart for a time equal to the original time and date plusthe number of years (and fractions) after it under consideration, times four minutes; and several others.If you like, I can go into each of them, their pros and cons and various uses at length some other time, butto save space now Ill just say that there are three types of Lunar progression: in the first, for every yearafter birth, a chart is calculated for that many calendrical months after the original time and date; in thesecond, for ever year after the original time and date, a chart is calculated for that many synodicalmonths, based on the time it takes for the Moon to go from a given phase back to that phase (e.g., full-to-full, new-to-new); in the third, theLunar-sidereal month -- the time it takes for Luna, as seen from Earthagainst the background of the Fixed Stars, to go once completely around the Zodiac and return to Herstarting point -- is used rather than the Synodical month, but otherwise the two techniques are identical.
