First Sunday after the Epiphany—The Baptism of Our Lord January 12, 2020

A warm welcome to those who are visiting us today. You may hang your coat in the entry way of the church

or on the coat rack downstairs. The bathrooms are located in the basement of this building. Before you go home today, please sign our guest book located on the podium in the entry way. Also, refreshments are served in the basement after our service this morning. And we invite you to join us for something to eat and drink.

Our lower level is wired for sound. If you need to take your child out during the service, you won’t miss any of the sermon.

In the unlikely event of an emergency during this morning’s service, you can exit the building using the main entryway or the exit to the right of the chancel. Our building does have a fire alarm system which is wired directly to the fire department. Remember, we follow the “Run, Hide, Fight” response in an emergency. Before Service Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, You instituted the Sacrament of Holy Communion to seal to me the personal guarantee that all my sins are forgiven. Lead me to true sorrow and repentance for all my sins. Give me faith to believe Your body and blood, once given and shed on the cross, are present with the bread and wine which I receive in this sacrament. Fill my heart and mind with comfort, peace, and joy, knowing that all my sins are pardoned. Give me renewed zeal each day and lead me to live a godly life in loving obedience to Your commandments. I ask this in Your precious name, O Savior. Amen.

Today’s Service: Divine Service 3, NPH, reprinted under OneLicense.net #A-800156 and under CCLI license #11327771. Today’s Theme: Jesus appears as the Christ, the Anointed One. The titles “Christ” (Greek) and “Messiah” (Hebrew) both mean “The Anointed One,” and they describe how God prepared Jesus for His mission. Since the days of Othniel (Judges 3:10), the Spirit of the Lord empowered God’s heroes to do His saving work. At His baptism, God anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit and with power and declared this son of Mary to be the Son of God—the one anointed to be the Savior of mankind. Stand Confession of Sins P: People redeemed by the Lord, let us now make confession of our sins to God our heavenly Father. C: Merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We repent of having sinned against You in thought, word, and deed. We have left undone those things we ought to have done; we have done those things we ought not to have done. We have not lived our lives fully in the baptismal grace with which we have been blessed. We have not completely shared the bounty You have given us as stewards of Your creation. We sincerely repent of our sins and humbly ask Your grace and forgiveness in Jesus Christ. By the renewing work of the Holy Spirit, forgive what is sinful in our lives, and grant that each day we grow in righteousness and godly living to the glory of Your holy name. Lord, have mercy on us. The Kyrie

Absolution P: God has promised pardon, life, and salvation because of the atoning sacrifice of His beloved Son. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. As you believe, so may it be. C: Amen.

P: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. (Refrain sung by the congregation; Verses sung by the choir.)

The Prayer of the Day P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray.

Father in heaven, at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan You proclaimed Him Your beloved Son and anointed Him with the Holy Spirit. Keep us who are baptized into Christ faithful in our calling as Your children and make us heirs with Him of everlasting life; through Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. Sit The First Lesson: ISAIAH 42:1-7 (This Servant Song foretells the Messiah’s work: He will be God’s own servant sent to accomplish God’s mission. God will choose Him, uphold Him and delight in Him. God will also put His Spirit on Him that He might bring justice to the nations. His ministry is characterized by gentleness toward the weak, but also by an inexorable driving toward His goal. He will not falter in the work for which He was anointed until He brings forth the right verdict, the justice that comes from God and declares His people righteous in His sight because of Messiah’s work. He will be the Mediator of the new covenant (Jeremiah 31:31-34) based on His person that will bring the people and the Gentiles out of the darkness of sin’s prison. Matthew’s account of Jesus’ baptism shows how these prophesies were perfectly fulfilled in the person of Jesus of Nazareth.) “Here is My servant, whom I uphold, My chosen one in whom I delight;

Page 4: New Life Ev · 2020-02-19 · In the unlikely event of an emergency during this morning’s service, ... the days of Othniel (Judges 3:10), the Spirit of the Lord empowered God’s

I will put My Spirit on Him, and He will bring justice to the nations. 2 He will not shout or cry out, or raise His voice in the streets. 3 A bruised reed He will not break, and a smoldering wick He will not snuff out. In faithfulness He will bring forth justice; 4 He will not falter or be discouraged till He establishes justice on earth. In His teaching the islands will put their hope.” 5 This is what God the LORD says— the Creator of the heavens, who stretches them out, who spreads out the earth with all that springs from it, who gives breath to its people, and life to those who walk on it: 6 “I, the LORD, have called You in righteousness; I will take hold of Your hand. I will keep You and will make You to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, 7 to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness. Verse of the Day: (Sung by the Choir) Alleluia. You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased. Alleluia. (Mark 1:11b) Stand The Gospel Lesson: MATTHEW 3:13-17 (What kind of God gets baptized? The Baptist’s question confronts every Christian reading this account, and we join in John’s incredulity at Jesus’ intended condescension. Though John objected, Jesus encouraged him to allow this concession in order to fulfill their purpose there together. Their joint purpose was to fulfill all righteousness. Jesus would do that by being the Messiah and standing in the place of sinful man—first at the font and ultimately at the cross. John would play his part by fulfilling his role as forerunner: baptizing with water that the Messiah might be revealed (John 1:31). When John consented and baptized Jesus and Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit and with power. In this inauguration into His office as the Christ, God prepared the Messiah for His mission with an unlimited outpouring of the Spirit (John 3:34). In the very next verse after this reading, empowered and led by the Spirit, the hero of God immediately goes out to war against Satan on behalf of mankind (Matthew 4:1ff), fulfilling all righteousness and bringing us peace.) 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented. 16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on Him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is My Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.”

P: The Gospel of our Lord. C: Praise be to you, O Christ.

Nicene Creed We believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from

God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, of one being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, He came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin

Mary, and became fully human. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who

in unity with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Hymn of the Day: CWS 710 “Jesus, Once With Sinners Numbered” The Sermon After the sermon, the congregation sings:

The Offering Stand The Prayer of the Church The Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are Yours now and forever. Amen. The Sacrament P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. (spoken) P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. C: It is good and right so to do. P: It is truly good, right, and proper that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, who through Holy Baptism has connected us with Christ Jesus and bestowed on us baptismal grace. Mercifully grant that we live in that grace all of our lives and await with joy the eternity that is to come in Your glorious presence. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, forevermore praising You and saying:
