Letter from the PresidentFollowing on from the importance of literacy, April is “Magazine” month on the R o t a r y C a l e n d a r . Subscriptions to Rotary magazines such as the Rotary Down Under are a compulsory part of Rotary membership, as they serve some very important purposes.

Firstly, Rotary magazines provide the official channel of communication from the Board of Rotary International to Rotarians.

Secondly, the letters and

articles in official Rotary publications share many examples of ideas that work – s u c c e s s f u l p r o j e c t s , fundraisers and other events – that can be adopted by other clubs.

I encourage you to take some time to read through the Rotary Down Under magazine every month. It is an excellent way to learn more about what is going on in the wider Rotary world.

Yours in Rotary,Simone

Last Week's Meeting

Our District Literacy C o o r d i n a t o r, M a r i e Kormandy, addressed our club on our final literacy topic for the month. Although she spoke primarily about the Computer Assisted Learning Solution (CALS) project that many Rotary districts (including ours) have adopted, that we could take on if we wished, she also discussed her own career in education, especially with both hearing impaired and vision impaired students.

Marie's presentation was participatory, where she gave us a first hand taste of what it was like to have learning difficulties. One exercise involved spelling words

backwards out loud, w i t h o u t w r i t i n g t h e m down, and a n o t h e r was to decipher a page of text that w a s j u m b l e d up. Both tasks were a little t r i c k y even for our very w e l l educated

membership, which certainly brought home the point that there is more to education than simply sending everyone along to the same class.

This Week's MeetingCalum Foulner, whom we sponsored to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Award camp in January, will tell us about his experiences at the camp. Calum was recommended to us by Debbie Cash; Calum has participated in the Pilgrimage of Hope, and has subsequently set up his own non profit, the Communities Moving Forward project, to benefit children in Nepal.

Magnifying MicroscopesRob Rohrlach has now handed the project over to Toni James, and much work has been done since then to work out exactly where things are at.

Previously, 15 clubs had been involved with 77 schools, distributing a total of 1600 microscopes. We're still trying to get a listing of exactly which schools and Photo (L-R): Marie Kormandy, Wilma McBain, Simone Carot Collins

clubs have been involved.

Numerous requests for more microscopes have come in in recent months, and an order for 600 more microscopes has now been placed. The new requests from Rotary Clubs are:

A request has also been received from a school in Hobart (from a young science teacher who is from WA), and we are trying to source a local club there to take it on.

We are now asking Rotary Clubs to pay for their microscopes in advance.

Interact At their most recent meeting on March 29th, our Interact Club elected their inaugural board:

We have now completed the paperwork required to have the club officially certified. They are chartering with 20 members, a fairly even mix of boys and girls from 4 schools in our local area.

RYDAWe'll be conducting our own Rotary Youth Driver Awareness seminar on 16th August, which Hamish M a c k i e i s coordinating.

We need 6 volunteers who are able to attend for the whole day, and they must all have Working With Children cards since we'll be

working with Year 11s.

The Rotary Club of Matilda Bay are hosting a RYDA event on June 23rd, so if anyone would like to observe to see what it involves prior to commiting to attending as a volunteer, that is the pefect opportunity to do so.

TED: Ideas Worth Spreading

Hamish Mackie has recommended www.ted.com as a “must see website”. With a headline “Riveting talks by remarkable people, free to the world”, it offers videos of recorded speeches across a wide variety of topics.

Crawley Quiz NightThe Rotary Club of Crawley is hosting a Quiz Night to improve burn patient care in Nepal. The funds raise will support a new international project of The McComb Foundation headed by Professor Fiona Wood in collaboration with the Burns Service of WA and the Burn Injury Research Unit at UWA.

Cost is $160 for a table of 8, or $20 for individual tickets. Book your table on www.rotarycrawley.org.au

Help save lives this EasterThe need for blood never takes a holiday, and with many regular donors away over the Easter / ANZAC Day long weekend, blood donations are more vital than ever at this time of year.

Your donation can help unborn babies, burns and

trauma victims, people with cancer, leukaemia and other serious illnesses.

If you are able to donate between 21 – 27 April, please make an appointment to give blood and save lives this Easter. Call the Australian Red Cross Blood Service on 13 14 95 or visit:donateblood.com.au

New Horizons: Winner of the District 9450 Bulletin Award for 2009/10

Humanitarian AwardRobert Pearce provided an update on the progress of the humanitarian award that he proposed to the club previously.

Pictured (left) is the mock-up of the plaque with the RI logo and the medallion mounted.

The award criteria is still

undergoing development.

There was some discussion regarding using a similarly designed plaque to be issued to the heads of government during this year’s CHOGM event in Perth. However, the cost of such an undertaking will need to be assessed once we have more details of how many would be required for such a presentation.
