Letter from the President The value of teamwork and delegation becomes most evident when one becomes unable to carry out their regular responsibilities.

I have been putting the bulletin together in Daniel's absence, and it is quite a time consuming task to lay out and attempt to format all the information and images. I am all the more appreciative of those that do contribute to the finished product you read each week: Di Collins in particular for news items and the

photos, Rob Rohrlach for his news contributions, and Daniel's time in collating it all and sourcing international news.

The bulletin is just one example of great teamwork ending in a seamless result – be it a project, event, or even a well-run meeting, many hands to indeed make light work, and I thank all of you who do regularly contribute to helping our club run smoothly.

It was wonderful to formally welcome our newest member last

week. We are delighted to have you as a member Jenny and look forward to a long and happy association with you.

Yours in Rotary service,Simone

This Week's Meeting

This week's meeting will be a dinner meeting when District Governor Ian and Jan Hutton do their Official Visit to our club.

The members of the Board are required to meet with DG Ian at 5.30 pm for a Club Assembly, where the Board members report on what is happening in the club. Fellowship commences at 6.30 pm for a 7.00pm dinner. The cost is $40 per person and it is BYO drinks. Your attendance is vital as the club is obliged to pay for 30 and to cover the cost we need at last 30 to attend so please bring partners and encourage friends to also come along to hear this year’s message from the District Governor.

With so many members away or working, a committed effort is required by everyone to make it a successful function.

Fancy a Great Night Away?

The raffle prize at the DG Visit Dinner this week is worth a serious flutter: a night accommodation in a Classic King Room at the InterContinental at Burswood with full buffet breakfast for two guests. Thank you to Jen and Hamish for this generous donation!

Last Week's Meeting

Jenny Gill was inducted as a member of the Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay last Wednesday. Jenny holds the classification Aged Care – Projects Manager. Her email is [email protected] and mobile is 0419 910 681. She has elected to join the Community & Vocational Projects committee.

Our guests last meeting were Phil and Nancy Sherwood, visiting from California.

Phil Sherwood was a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar to Western Australia in1976 and 77. Phil was a member of the Rotary Club of Rossmoyne during his stay in Perth

in the mid 1970s and rejoined Rotary when he retired in 2006. Now a member of the Rotary Club of Arden-Arcade in District 5180, California, Phil kindly supported our Matching Grant for the Manna Industries Kids in the Kitchen project. Phil and Nancy will be visiting the project on Tuesday (12th) at 8.00am so they can take back first hand information on the project.

He has become passionate about International Service and has taken up, amongst other projects, the distribution of wheelchairs through Ken Berring’s Wheelchair Foundation in California. The chairs are manufactured in China and come in a flat pack which take around 15 mins to assemble.

Rotarians from the USA travel to countries where quantities of wheelchairs are sent (mainly funded through Rotary Foundation Matching Grants) and assist Rotary Clubs in the recipient countries to assemble and distribute the chairs.

Phil has discovered our own WA ‘Wheelchairs for Kids’ in Malaga, a project of the Rotary Club of Scarborough, which manufactures

high quality wheelchairs for a cost of $100, sent anywhere in the world. He is now going to look at working with ‘Wheelchairs for Kids’ on his return to Sacramento.

GSE Team for 2011

Our applicant Nana Kurosaki was not successful. She was well prepared as far as knowledge was concerned, however, she presented extremely nervously. It is recommended she reapply next year.

The team that has been selected to go to Germany in 2011 is:

Franziska Forrer – (Midland) - Team LeaderAmanda Mulcahy – (Mt Lawley) Physio and policy officer - Health DepartmentDianne Meredith – (Swan Valley) Media Advisor for CentrelinkRebecca Pickering – (Kununurra) Metallurgical Superintendent Argyle Diamonds Rio TintoPaul Channon – (Corrigin) Team Leader CBHReserve Janelle Veitch –(Subiaco) Engagement Officer for Dept for Communities

The German Team will visit WA in 2012 and in early 2011 the District Committee will be contacting clubs regarding their willingness to be involved.

Due to the expansion of the District the GSE program will be reviewed over the next three months.

Ambassadorial Scholarship

The completed application endorsed by the District has been received by the appropriate Rotary Foundation staff member at Rotary Headquarters in Evanston.Justin is heading towards his final law exams and we wish him every success.

Rohallah Haidari

Rohallah was sponsored last year by our club for a Rotary Foundation Peace Fellowship, unfortunately unsuccessfully. Bill and Sue Hassell, who where his counsellors, have continued to assist Rohallah.

Rohallah married Sima when he was in Afghanistan last year and just two months ago she has been able to come to Australia to live from Moscow, where she has been studying for five years.

For several months Rohallah has been working for the Government in Christmas Island as an interpreter with the Boat people. He will be going to Curtin Detention Centre to continue his work, however, would like to study law with an aim to assist refugees with their immigration issues.

Good to see Rohallah happy and with such positive direction in his life.

Charity Fund

Having been provided with a new ABN for the Charity Fund and our old ABN restored for the Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay Inc, we have received word from Maryanne McKenzie, the solicitor acting on our behalf from Talbot and Olivier, that we have received endorsement as a deductible gift recipient, however, this is just for projects within Australia.

It has been quite a process getting this far. The DGR status has been backdated to the date of the allocation of our ABN which is 3rd September 2010.

Step one has been achieved. Hopefully, step two will commence

shortly, for an application to be put in process to receive deductible gift recipient status for International projects.

A reminder that outstanding Club dues are overdue

Would all members who have not yet paid their dues please do so immediately. The Club has paid your District and Rotary International Dues along with your magazine subscription and we require your dues to cover these costs.

Pre Halloween Social Function

Saturday 30th October at 7.00pm at Toni and Bill James home, 4 Archdeacon Street, Nedlands is the date and venue for our next social activity.

It will be a pre Halloween dinner with members requested to bring a bottle of drink and a dish to share. There will be no cost involved and those who wish to dress up please do so, however, those who prefer not to, there is no pressure to attend in fancy dress.

Conservation Week

October 23rd - 30th is Conservation Week, and our speaker that week will be Professor Jorg Imberger, talking about sustainability. Our meeting has been registered as a Conservation Week event, to raise our profile in our local community.
