Online registration All participants who wish to attend the conference must register via the webshop in advance. Since the capacity of the conference is limited, registrations will be handled by order of receipt. Please note that registrations are only deemed official after receipt of the registration fee.

Registration fee The registration fee for participation of the ASTP-Proton conference is €1145 for ASTP-Proton members and €1540 for non-ASTP-Proton members. The fee includes admission to the conference and the conference dinner as well as extended conference documents, lunches and refreshments. The fee must be paid in advance to participate. Please visit our website www.astp-proton.eu for special offers for participants from Turkey & CEE countries, students and group discounts. All fees are exempted from VAT.

Payment All payments must be made in euros, free from all bank and other charges. No personal or company cheques will be accepted. The online credit card payments will be handled by PaySquare and does not incur any extra charges. If you prefer to receive a hard copy of the invoice and pay by bank wire, an administrative fee of €25 will be calculated.

Cancellation In case you are unable to attend the conference, a substitute delegate is welcome to take your place without any extra costs, if he/she carries a letter of authorisation from the original participant. If you cancel before 23 April 2015, an administrative fee of €95 will be charged. Please note that no refunds are possible after this date.

ASTP-Proton membership If you are currently not an ASTP-Proton member, you can apply for membership via our webshop and register to the conference at the same time as ASTP-Proton member. You will receive a confirmation letter upon approval of membership.

Accommodation We have several hotel suggestions in Istanbul. Visit the events website for an overview of the selected hotels. It is advisable to book your hotel room as soon as possible!

Researchers from academia are the hidden champions for innovation in Europe. If motivated, they will be major drivers of innovation. However, there is still a high potential of inventions in academia which are not being utilized. What do researchers really want – money or fame? How are they motivated towards commercialization?

Moreover, the current environment for academic inventors is diverse, because there is no har-monized employees’ invention law in Europe. This session will look into the current trends and some typical regulations in selected European countries and highlight important issues to be considered for transnational collaborations and licensing.

“Copy pasting” is not the right thing to do in tech transfer. You can only deliver results if your of-fice is modelled to your local situation: do you have sufficient volume to work with and to build up expertise, how does the legal situation look like (who owns the inventions?), what is the local culture, how can your operations be financed... Find out how tech transfer offices and operati-ons are set up in quite different environments and take home what can be useful to yourself.

Providing consultancy on innovation internationally is a growing function of well-established commercialisation offices. Many well established Technology Transfer Offices are now working in this way with academic and governmental organisations with less developed technology transfer and commercialisation functions potentially building capacity in technology transfer, globally (very much in line with the goals of the H2020 CBTT programme). This session will exa-mine strategies and operational models for doing this. What are the challenges? What are the overarching benefits of Technology Transfer Offices providing this? What funding streams are there for such consultancy?

During the KSE session, you can navigate through the different options and create your own personal programme! Within the last 10-15 years, most universities in Europe have established Technology Transfer Centres and started the typical TT activities like patenting, licencing and spin out formation. However, there is so much more about TT, which one could do, if only the resources would be there. So the idea of this session is to learn more about funding opportunities, which enable TTOs to expand their activities and thus to become an important player in their regional innova-tion landscape.

Track II: The evolving role of IP in China - barrier or catalyst for technology transfer? Moderator: Marta Catarino | Room: TBA

In this session, an overview of how IP protection and management has been evolving in China, including the latest developments announced by the Chinese Patent Office (SIPO) and how it affects technology transfer will be the starting point to a lively discussion with the audience. What are the current experiences, future challenges and opportunities in technology transfer both from the perspective of European Tech Transfer offices licensing to Chinese companies and Chinese universities doing business in Europe? Join us and share your experiences.

Inter- or cross-cultural issues do play a role in technology transfer being a global business. This session introduces the major pitfalls when negotiating a deal with a partner from a different culture. Specific business cases e.g. from European consortia will be presented to highlight cultural differences and get some practical insight on how to deal with them. The session will look at these issues from a psychological and business point of view.

It is hard enough to create university spin-outs. It is even harder to create spin-outs with a true international potential. In this session, we will hear the stories of two very different spin-outs, one German and one Norwegian, who have both managed to take their businesses to an inter-national level. Ganymed Pharmaceuticals AG is a spin-out from the Universities of Mainz and Zurich. The company develops highly selective Ideal Monoclonal Antibodies for the treatment of cancer. Kahout is a spin-out from the Norwegian University of Science & Technology (NTNU) and is a game-based learning platform aimed at schools, universities and businesses. It would be hard to find two more different companies in terms of spin-out route, challenges, markets and customers. Join us to hear these two extraordinary stories of spin-outs going global.

Industry and TTOs of universities/public research organisations (PROs) choose to work together in a number of different ways (for example, through collaborations, licensing or consultancy). Do universities and PROs’ TTOs really understand the needs and culture of industry when it comes to agreeing suitable terms and building strong relationships? What issues should TTOs be aware of when working with industry? What does industry want to see from TTOs in order to make their interactions more effective. This session will provide an industry perspective.

For many years, there was no such thing like a standardised technology transfer education- one simply had to figure out on, who offers education and training on relevant subjects and put together his own curriculum. But as technology transfer transformed into a profession the rele-vance of standardisation became evident. In this session we want to discuss this relevance, the power of recognition, the various approaches and elucidate the options for the ones interested in getting a professional education.

One of the most challenging tasks in technology transfer is the evaluation of early stage inven-tion disclosures. Since most TTOs cannot afford to have a specialist for every field, There are several good reasons to use external advice in the evaluation procedure from time to time. First of all, most TTOs cannot afford to have a specialist in every field. Secondly, getting an expert opinion of colleagues from industry can help a lot to get a more realistic view on the new cases. Finally, many TTOs do not have the resources to cope with all the invention disclosures on their own.

In this session we will hear about the experience of both sides: the TTO hiring external advice and the TTO helping others by providing advice.
