Each year, when theNew Hamburg Live!Festival of the Arts isover, we ask ourselves:“What do we do to topthis one?” The answer isalways, “We can’t; it wasterrific.”

And it always has beenterrific. None the less, we keep finding ways tomake it even more terrific.

For instance, this year we proudly presenttenor John McDermott. Months before theFestival, we heard of people coming thou-sands of miles for this concert.

We welcome the Canadian Brass, one of themost honoured ensembles in the world. We’vegot a full opera, performed in concert, withchamber orchestra. There’s Dixieland Jazz, the return of actor and storyteller BarryMacGregor, a fabulous string quartet, asuperb choral group with a love for pop music.

Plus, a knock-your-socks off gospel concert, and the premiere of avery exciting newly com-missioned work of songsabout our heritage. Don’tforget our popular andvery entertaining choralworkshop, plus a story-

telling workshop and the best art show yet, with many award-winning artists.

In 2012, we have added another day, extending the Festival to a full week, May 28-June 3.

And we’re thrilled that TD Canada Trusthas donated $2,500 so we can give free ticketsto all students, to all events. Just ask!

Can’t get any better? Hey, it just did. Enjoyevery minute of this exceptional week.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get better...

New Hamburg Live! is thrilled to welcomeinternationally acclaimed tenor JohnMcDermott, Friday evening, June 1, atSteinmann Mennonite Church (7:30 p.m.),with the John McDermott Trio, includingMichael Peter Smith and Jason Fowler.

John McDermott’s accomplishments havebecome legendary in recording industry lore.He is a long way from the man for whomsinging was a hobby less than ten years ago.John was discovered quite by chance, whenworking as a circulation sales representativefor the Toronto Sun, he belted out animpromptu rendition of Danny Boy at a com-pany party.

John’s first album, Danny Boy, was origi-nally recorded as a very private and personal50th anniversary tribute for his parents. Itsquality could not be ignored and it eventuallyfound its way into the hands of EMI MusicCanada. Danny Boy subsequently garneredstrong sales for a debut release in the U.S. andCanada. This success, in addition to a fastgrowing North American fan base, wonthrough a tireless touring schedule, led to hisparticipation in the PBS phenomenon, TheIrish Tenors. John’s presence helped generatea US gold record, three US tours, and a high-profile media schedule, which includedappearances on Good Morning America andThe Today Show. In November 2001, Johntaped John McDermott A Time to Rememberat the Living Arts Centre outside Toronto. This, his first solo television special, beganairing in March 2002 on PBS affiliates acrossNorth America.

The outcome of that performance has cata-pulted him into a musical career that includesthree Canadian platinum records, five Junonominations, a solid international touringschedule, and many more albums. His successhas allowed him to express his commitment toveterans causes, which have always been inte-gral to John and an important theme in hismusic. He is a recipient of one the UnitedStates’ highest honours the CongressionalMedal of Honor Society’s Bob Hope Award.

In 2010 John received a commendationfrom the Minister of Veterans Affairs for hiswork with veterans including his foundationMcDermott House Canada, which is commit-ted to creating an improved quality of care inthe final stages of a terminal illness, coupledwith a warm, welcoming place to stay inCanada for veterans, military, first respondersand their families.

It is with this spirit he recorded his currentCD entitled Journeys, which tells the story ofour Canadian heroes.

Long-time Stratford and Broadway starBarry MacGregor has become a great friendof the New Hamburg Live! Festival of theArts. In 2011, he premiered his one-man play,“Tales of the Theatre”, at the Festival.

In 2012, Barry is back, with Tales of theTheatre: Volume II, which opens theFestival, Monday, May 28, at 7:30 p.m., at St.George’s Anglican Church. His stories of lifeon the stage – and back stage – were a big hitlast year, and we are thrilled that he hasspent a good part of the time since honing anew set of stories, sure to delight theatrelovers as he tells of hijinks and hiccups.

Barry has an impressive resumé and anenormous reputation as an actor, for his workwith the Stratford Festival, the Shaw, onBroadway and in theatres around the world. One highlight was his performance as TheFool, opposite Christopher Plummer, in KingLear, both at Stratford and on Broadway.

The Canadian ensemble that has perfectedthe idea of a brass quintet performs at NewHamburg Live! Tuesday evening, May 29, at7:30 p.m. at Steinmann Mennonite Church.

Five tremendous brass musicians – each avirtuoso in his own right – form the legendaryCanadian Brass. With an international repu-tation as one of the most popular brassensembles today, Canadian Brass has trulyearned the distinction of the world’s mostfamous brass group.

Chuck Daellenbach and Gene Watts firstcame together in 1970 to form a brass quintet– a chamber music setting not entirely new,but never before having garnered the successand storied career Canadian Brass wouldachieve over the next 40 years. Three emptychairs were quickly filled and together, thegroup’s imagination and consummate musi-cianship elevated the art of the brass quintetto what it is today.

The varied Canadian Brass repertoire

features brass standards as well as a wide-ranging library of original arrangements created especially for them. These include theworks of Renaissance and Baroque masters,Classical works, marches, holiday favorites, ragtime, Dixieland, Latin, jazz, big band,Broadway and Christian music, as well aspopular songs and standards. Having startedwith a very limited base, Canadian Brass hascreated their own musical world by transcrib-ing, arranging and commissioning more than200 works. They have transformed a previ-ously neglected group of instruments with alimited repertoire into a versatile and vitalensemble that can play everything fromGabrieli to Gershwin!

With a discography of over 100 albums andan extensive world-wide touring schedule,Canadian Brass is an important pioneer inbringing brass music to mass audienceseverywhere. They have sold well over 2 mil-lion albums worldwide, most recently their

Two well-known Waterloo Region musicians and awriter have combined their talents to tell the story of theregion in a new and unique way. The three have collabo-rated to produce a “song cycle” – a collection of songslinked by narrative – rooted in the the heritage of theregion. The three collaborators are Charlene Nafzigerand Mike Erb, who composed the music, and PaulKnowles, who has written the lyrics.

The finished product, called “The River Rolls”,includes 14 original songs, and will be premiered at the2012 New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts, onSaturday, June 2, at 10:30 a.m., at St. George’s AnglicanChurch. The production will feature eight musicians anda narrator. Nafziger and Erb will perform, Knowles willdo the narration, and other musicians and singers, including soloist Erin Bardua, will take part.

The River Rolls is like a musical tapestry or patch-work quilt. The songs are set in different musical styles, but the entire work is one piece, an artistic expression ofthe story of local communities. The production is staged

in concert format. The River Rolls is story-telling in musical

form, a unique artistic opportunity for peoplewho experience this creation to consider theirheritage from several different points of view.

The River Rolls focuses on individualsand themes that are representative of keydevelopments in the region’s history. Itincludes songs about the artist HomerWatson, pioneer Barbara Schneider, politicianMackenzie King, innovator Sir Adam Beck, and ex-slave Levi Carroll. Other songs in thesong cycle celebrate Native Canadian her-itage, the mills of the region, quilting, and

early hotels, among other themes. The songsare full of humour and vitality; those whohave previewed the production have ravedabout the quality of the music.

The project has been made possiblebecause of a grant from the Region ofWaterloo Arts Fund, and the support of NewHamburg Live!

After the Festival premiere, the intentionis to do a number of performances throughoutthe region, especially in schools and muse-ums. For more information about “The RiverRolls”, contact any of the three collaborators,or email [email protected].

New Hamburg Live! is proud of the choraltradition that has become an important partof this Festival. Each year, at least one per-formance has included choral music – Lisztanthems, in 2011; the Elmer Iseler Singers in2010; gospel in 2009 and 2010.

This season, our choral concert takes a turnfor the Pops, as we welcome the very accom-plished group, the Peterborough PopEnsemble, in concert Saturday, June 2, 7:30p.m. at Steinmann Church.

Under the direction of Barbara Monahan,The Peterborough Pop Ensemble has devel-oped a reputation over the past decade for itsvivid musical interpretations of a broad spec-

trum of music including jazz, pop, Broadwayand gospel. With its seamless blend of voices, rich choral harmonies, and energetic perform-ances, this vocal ensemble strives to provideits audiences with memorable musical experi-ences.

Critics have praised the Ensemble’s eclecticrepertoire, “whether it's a solemn rendition oftraditional pieces, a cappella, or for the greatfun of a rollicking pop performance with fullband and outrageous costumes.”

In September 2011 the Pop Ensemble wasmost proud to be designated Ambassadors tothe City of Peterborough, in acknowledgementof its continued support of many local chari-
