FUTURA ROUND URW++ LIBRARY

Futura is THE prototype of a geometric or constructed linear sans serif and the font most commonly font of its kind used to date. Futura, very much influenced by the Bauhaus movement in Germany, was designed in 1927 by Paul Renner. Although being around for almost 90 years, Futura seems eternally young and fresh which also explains its continuous popularity with designers and typographers. Futura simply means efficiency and functionality documented by both its many usages as corpo-rate type (e.g. Volkswagen, formerly IKEA, Vuitton, Shell, formerly HP, SMA and many more) as well as in various famous film projects (e.g. Kubrick, Anderson etc.). Futura’s iconic status was probably established when it walked on the moon with the Apollo 11 crew in 1969. It was used for the lettering of the plaque that was left up there.Now, URW++ has expanded its range of Futura styles by Futura Round with 14 addi-tional styles.

The new typeface from the URW++ designers is called URW Urban and follows the trend of the pattern fonts. Each character has been provided with an individual pat-tern, which was created by our designers with a special stamp technique. To create a vivid typeface, there is a stylistic alternate for nearly every character. In this way the grotesque has a modern, unconventional look.URW Urban reflects a metropolitan lifestyle and is perfect for themes like party, music, sport and film.

URW BRAILLE URW++ LIBRARY

This Braille solution has primarily been developed by URW++ for the packaging and pharmaceutical industry. It allows for automatic transcoding of multi-lingual texts into Braille by fully exploiting features of the OpenType technology.All Braille symbols and characters are contained in one font file, including the special versions for 28 different languages. The carefully programmed OpenType features guarantee that you always get the correct character corresponding to the language chosen for the application.

In case you need a Braille character not included in the standards, you can just type in its code by hand and the sophisticated OpenType functionality will take care of re-placing the code by the correct symbol.

And of course it is understood that the solution complies with the "Marburg medium" format and faithfully respects the standards issued by the EU and the ECMA for Braille inscriptions on pharmaceutical products. We hardly can imagine a simpler, more secure and elegant solution!

LP Pinsel Satt is a new brush handwriting script from German designer Peter Lang-peter (lp-design.de). LP has been running his own design studio since 1995, working as a typeface and logo designer, as a calligrapher, cartographer and illustrator. Dur-ing this time LP created a large number of excellent new typeface designs. Now, we are extremely happy that LP has chosen to let URW digitally produce and market his designs. LP Pinsel Satt is a charming, dynamic-flowing and modern brush script.

LP SATURNIA FONTFORUM

After designing two script fonts (lp Pinselschrift and lp Bambus), Peter Langpeter has now drawn an elegant Antiqua font, namely lp Saturnia, derived and conceived from his work in creating headlines and logos. The aim was to create a modern in-terpretation of the classical Roman letters (Capitalis Monumentalis or Trajan by Carol Twombly), avoiding the archaic look of these letterforms. Also, the difficulty of spacing characters with excessive forms, such as the long tails of “K” and “R”, are avoided. Ad-ditionally, lp Saturnia also comes with lower case characters. The result is a contempo-rary and elegant typeface that is more suitable for practical use but without renouncing the classical Roman character.

LE ROCK FONTFORUM

Marit Otto on Le Rock: Le rock is the newborn sister of my first typeface Jazmo and a relative of my music inspired font family.Le Rock seems to wiggle and jiggle a little as if it invites you to dance. This is caused by the gaps in the individual characters. The typeface can also be seen as eroded, carved and sculpted by mother nature.But besides, the design of Le Rock can also be associated with the characteristics of stones: Solid and since ever, here, there and everywhere. To walk on, lean against, to be surrounded by, to build with and to shelter in.It cannot be denied, that there are also some comic art influences. The font is outspo-ken enough to be used in any form of graphic design, like poster and flyers, but at the same time it remains readable enough for longer texts.

LABYRINDO FONTFORUM

Labyrindo is inspired on the classic Labyrinth. The oldest known labyrinth is 3200 years old and is to be found in Greece. The mythological king Minos held the mon-strous son of his wife ‘Minotaurus’ prison in a labyrinth.Much later the labyrinth made his appearance in the medieval churches, this time as a pattern on the church floor.During the Italian renaissance the multiple gate labyrinth came in fashion. Paths led trough green hedges in beautiful palace gardens. These hedges where perfectly cut in rectangular shapes. Mainly meant as an aesthetic statement.Besides the origin of the physic labyrinth, it has always been a great source of story telling and myths. I mention a few personal favourites (film) like, Pan’s Labyrinth (a journey to the underworld), Labyrinth (with David Bowie) and the Shining with Jack Nicholson (where a horrific scene takes place in a labyrinth). Not the most cheerful stories but fascinating and intriguing.A Labyrinth is mind boggling and mysterious but wonderful. I made graphic translation in this typeface.

SMOOTH BUGGALOO FONTFORUM

Marit Otto on Smooth Buggaloo: Just like my previous typefaces, my new one, Smooth Buggaloo, also finds its roots in music. The Boogaloo was a popular music style in the 60ties, a mixture of Latin and Rock and Roll music. Later Salsa took over this genre. Latin music represents a vibrant, lively and an uncontrollable need to move. In the Smooth Buggaloo you will recognize a swing, flair and a hint of seduction. But despite its vibrancy it can also be understood as a serious, simple and clean type-face. The characters vary between a handwritten and a designed look. Smooth Buggaloo is very suitable for any graphic purpose, like logo- and posterdesign and it can also be used for longer texts.

In 1905 the Parisian typefounders Peignot & Cie. issued their Série 16. This clear ro-man with a large x-height and an italics soon enjoyed a great popularity.Coen Hofmann’s drawings made for the Seizième follow the original Peignot Série 16 as close as possible. The regular font has the original small caps, while all members of the family are enhanced, next to the ranging ones, with old style figures. Also superior and inferior figures are available. The original series did not have a bold version. This was, however, carefully drawn for this digital rendition. The Série 16 and its versions for the composing machines were much used for the type setting of scientific publica-tions. That is why a comprehensive set of mathematical and sundry characters are added to the Seizième fonts. Next to the accented characters for the several West and East European languages the Seizième was also enhanced with a Cyrillic, also avail-able in regular, italic and bold versions.

SIGNPAINTERS SCRIPT FONTFORUM

For his new typeface Coen Hofmann was inspired by old sign lettering. This design Signpainters Script was a typical one used as a handdrawn lettering for shop windows and fascias in the days when cutting plotters were still a thing of the future.
