The Morgan School, apublic school for students ingrades 9 to 12 in Clinton,Conn., is getting a newbuilding. The 141,000 sq. ft.(13,099 sq m) school facilitywill include parking lots andathletic fields, includingbaseball, softball, lacrosse,soccer, football, and seventennis courts.The project, which began
in October 2014 with ananticipated completion dateof September 2016, alsoincludes the installation ofculverts and a pedestrianbridge for crossing theIndian River, which passesthrough the site. The culvert, which is about 20 ft. wide and50 ft. long (6 by 15 m), also will be the spot for water andgas utilities to be brought into the site. Beneath the tenniscourts is a massive leach field. The site was previously the home of what was once
known as the Clinton Nursery, a wholesale nursery operationthat was well known in the area. Three pre-existing homes
on the site were demolished. But before the books and desks are brought in and before
students can show up for class, $8 million of site work mustbe performed. The building site is a 41-acre site with 36,000 cu. yd.

The Maine Department of Transportation has formallyentered into an agreement with Cianbro Corporation ofPittsfield, Maine, for the construction of the new SarahMildred Long Bridge connecting Kittery, Maine andPortsmouth, New Hampshire.“This agreement represents a good bridge for a good
price with a base bid construction cost of $158.5 million tobe divided between the two states,” said MaineDOTCommissioner David Bernhardt. “The seacoast area willbe well served for generations with this new bridge.”This will be a precast segmental concrete bridge. The
lift span will have a deck that will lift for ships and lowerfor the rail. It will have a higher elevation and will reducethe need to lift the deck by 68 percent, which will mini-mize traffic impacts. The navigational opening will bewider, allowing for much safer ship passage and will bet-ter accommodate larger ships.“This agreement marks a significant milestone in this

Milton CAT Holds Open House at Mass. Headquarters
According to company officials at Milton CAT, the success of arecent open house for students, their families and school representa-tives was a clear sign — young people need real-life choices as theymake decisions regarding their careers and their future, and they appre-ciate the opportunity to learn more about the different paths they cantake to reach their goals.
Corporate Technician Recruitment and Development Manager RonBarton reported that 152 students, many accompanied by their parents,toured the Milford, Mass., headquarters, talked to staff members, and
got a glimpse at the range of possibilities available today towell-trained service technicians. According to Barton, therewere 18 high schools, six colleges and one middle schoolrepresented.
“Some visitors came from as far as Buffalo, N.Y., as wellas from northern Maine,” said Barton, who added that a spe-cial guest was Massachusetts State House RepresentativeSteven Howitt.
Barton said that guests first toured Milton CAT’s earth-moving location at 100 Quarry Drive; some of the stops,including product support solutions and compact construc-tion equipment were manned by a subject matter expert whoexplained details and answered the students’ questions. Nextthe visitors toured the power systems building, where theywere met by a subject matter expert who showed them on-highway trucks, marine engines and the electric power gen-eration side of the business.
“The last stop on the facilities tour was the company’s newtraining center, which offers a concrete and powerful testi-mony to the company’s commitment to training and devel-opment,” Barton said.

which is being reutilized in other areas of the site. Only about25,000 cu. yd. (19,114 cu m) of outside material is beingbrought in to the site, which is primarily aggregate material.
Clearing the Way With KomatsuRichards Corporation, Terryville, Conn., purchased a
Komatsu D51PXi dozer with a fully integrated, factory
installed GPS system from East PBE specifically for thisproject.
“We have been using GPS for some time to map out ourconstruction site,” said Marc Young, site superintendent.“This technology has been very helpful to us in that once wedid our layout we no longer have the need for land survey-ors on the site. This has been a tremendous savings of timeand expense for us, in not having the surveyors return eachday to stake and layout the site.”
For this project, Richards was ready to take the GPS tech-nology to the next level. The company uploaded the map ofthe site directly to the bulldozers and allowed the GPS tech-nology to actually take over the controls of the bulldozer andallow the operators to hit an exact grade with each pass of the
bulldozer. “We knew that this type of technology is extremely pre-
cise and this type of job would lend itself very well to thistechnology. We are dealing with a very light material thatdoes not contain a lot of large stone. These types of condi-tions we knew would allow us to get ultimate return in thistype of technology.
“The technology that is available today is astounding.You can create a 3-D map of your proposed finished site,put it on a thumb drive, plug the thumb drive into yourequipment, and let the GPS unit take over the controls ofyour machine, eliminating the daily staking out ritual of thesite.
“These machines roll out of the factory ready to have themapping of your job siteuploaded and go to work.There are no cables inbetween the machine and theblade, no bulky GPS mastattached to the blade thatcould easily be damaged orvandalized, no daily connec-tions required between themachine and the blade. Themachine was intelligentlydesigned from the ground upto operate the world’s cuttingedge grading technology.

Designed for ComfortIt was not just the technol-
ogy that made the Komatsustand out for Richards. Theentire machine had beendesigned to improve opera-tor comfort and visibility,including moving the radia-tor from the front of themachine to the rear of themachine in an effort toincrease blade visibility. Thecab was moved far forward,directly above the blade sothat the operator can at alltimes see the top and the bot-tom of the blade and theexhaust stack has beenmoved so it no longer comesinto the field of vision for the operator at all,according to Young. “The machine is equipped with four
operating modes to provide ideal efficiencyin all types of weather and soil conditions.Within a very short period of time our oper-ators were completely comfortable with themachine. In all reality the machine’s opera-tion was dramatically easier than it had everbeen before. The GPS takes over all of themovement of the blade. All potential direc-tional movement of the blade [up, down, left,
right, tilts, etc.] is controlled by the intelli-gence center of the machine, giving youexactly the grade you are looking for, usual-ly in a single pass of the machine.”Various sensors are located around the
machine that constantly sends data to thedozer to enhance its operation. If the load onthe blade gets heavy the torque through thehydrostatic drive system is increased withoutthe operator having to make any adjustmentsto the throttle. If either side of the blade picks

First Stages of Construction Begin With ‘in-Water’ Work, Bridge Closurewillingness to be innovativeto deliver transportationprojects. We look forward tothe final phase of theprocess, the construction ofthis bridge.”With the agreement
signed, the first stages ofconstruction will begin with“in-water” work scheduledto start within the first twoweeks of December 2014. The current bridge will beclosed for six to nine months due to its intercepting theold bridge at the Kittery side. During that time, all traf-fic will be detoured to the Piscataqua River Bridge onI-95.MaineDOT will sponsor public informational presen-
tations on the construction of the project approximatelyevery six months led by the designers of the bridge, FiggEngineering/Hardesty & Hanover. During the summermonths there will be some “tool box talks” in a safe areaof the bridge to discuss the project. In early September 2014, a $25 million TIGER
(Transportation Investment Generating Economic
Recovery) Grant was awarded to Maine and NewHampshire for the rail portion of the bridge. Maine Sen.Susan Collins, ranking member of the SenateAppropriations Subcommittee on Transportation as wellas Maine Sen. Angus King and Maine CongresswomanChellie Pingree were pivotal in identifying the crucialneed of the grant to the USDOT.Construction will continue year round until comple-
tion, with the bridge scheduled to open to traffic inSeptember of 2017.

bled. The second week on the job theKomatsu D51 boxed out a 51,000 squarefoot parking lot to subgrade with an approx-imately 4-foot cut. There were islands in theparking lot with a 60 percent grade. Thedozer effortlessly hit those grades andshaped out the islands perfectly without anylayout or staking. After the lot was subgrad-
ed, the Komatsu D51 placed a 1-foot layer ofstone. This involved 1,900 yards of stoneinstalled to a perfect grade without the use ofstaking.”
