As a full-service metal recycling center for all ferrous andnonferrous metals, Allied Recycling is effective at process-ing everything made out of metal. It provides trucking serv-ices for its customers along with onsite processing whenneeded. Allied offers demolition, junk car pick-up, equip-ment rentals and heavy equipment recycling services to its

customers. “We would rather do no business, than provide bad busi-

ness or bad service. Our customers are the reason why wehave grown this business, and it’s our number one goal tomeet their needs. All of the metal recyclers in this region canbuy and sell metal. We do much more than that for our cus-tomers by offering them solutions that are not only finan-cially favorable, but we also offering them a variety of serv-

ices so that we can tailor our their recycling experience towhat is best for the customer as opposed to what is best forus,” said Sciaba. Due to the extensive volume of scrap metal processed,

Allied needs strong, reliable, fuel efficient machinery toprocess the material. It currently uses Liebherr wheel load-ers, track excavators and wheeled material handlers pur-chased from Lorusso HeavyEquipment. “After buying our first

Liebherr from Gerry Carneyat Lorusso HeavyEquipment, there was noquestion about what type ofequipment to purchase forour daily business opera-tions. Liebherr makes anoutstanding product. Theyare cost effective anddependable. Lorusso HeavyEquipment provides excel-lent customer service,” saidSciaba. For more information on

BOSTON (AP) Boston MayorMartin Walsh released a housing planon Oct. 9 calling for $21 billion in pub-lic and private construction to meet thecity’s housing needs over the next twodecades.Walsh said the city needs to build

53,000 units of housing to accommo-date a surging population and to pre-vent low- and middle-income residentsfrom being priced out of the city. Thatwould bring Boston’s total housingunits to 317,976, a roughly 20 percentincrease from the 264,908 units thecity had in 2010, according to Walsh’sreport.“Boston is growing, and I am com-

mitted to making sure that the prosper-ity Boston is enjoying reaches everyneighborhood and every Boston resi-dent,” Walsh said in a statement. “Anyperson who wants to contribute to

making Boston better should be able tolive and succeed here — regardless oftheir income level, race, or physicalability.”Boston’s population has been recov-

ering in recent years from decades ofsteady declines. U.S. Census Bureaudata suggests Boston is gaining popu-lation twice as fast as the rest of thestate, according to Walsh’s report. Thecapital city is expected to grow fromabout 650,000 residents to more than700,000 by 2030, a level Boston hasnot seen since the late 1950s, whenfamilies across the country decampedfrom cities to new suburbs. With young, highly skilled workers

increasingly being drawn to Boston’sscience and technology sectors, thereport says the city needs to build44,000 housing units for working-ageadults. Another 5,000 units are neededfor senior citizens, and 4,000 are need-ed to help ease housing demand andtemper soaring housing prices, the

report says.Walsh’s report suggests the city’s

many colleges and universities play akey role in addressing Boston’s hous-ing needs. He wants colleges to create16,000 new dorm beds for undergrad-uate students, reducing by about 50percent the number of those studentsliving off campus and freeing up thou-sands of apartments for workingadults. The move also would preventstudents from living in substandardrental units that the city has been tryingto crack down on.Walsh also wants to loosen city zon-

ing restrictions, provide incentives forbuilding taller buildings, encouragedevelopers to build around publictransportation hubs and increase cityspending on affordable housing from$31 million a year to $51 million.

Vt.’s PC Construction TakesIts Expertise NationwideWith more than 55 years of experience in

the construction industry, it’s no surprise thatPC Construction has taken not only Vermontbut also the eastern United States by storm. The business proudly calls SouthBurlington, Vt., home with regional corpo-rate offices in North Carolina and Maine. The company has come a long way from

the small masonry construction companystarted by the Pizzagalli family in 1958. PCConstruction undertakes projects across theEastern seaboard and as far west asCalifornia. The Yellow River WaterReclamation Facility in Georgia, HotelVermont in Vermont and the MolnlyckeHealth Center in Brunswick, Maine, is a tes-tament to their expertise.

Time for a ChangeAs director of IT, Randy K. Lessor’s

world was filled with challenges typicallyfaced by most construction companies. ITneeded to run a corporate data center inVermont, which hosted server and storageinfrastructure with all departmental and con-struction project shares, a VPN for remoteaccess and backup. Since projects werespread across the country, each projectrequired its own collaboration infrastructure, which was done by spinning up an old FTPserver and creating individual folder struc-tures dedicated to each project. This wascumbersome and time consuming for ITbecause each FTP site took hours to set up.In addition, all access to employees and part-ners who needed files ultimately wentthrough IT, making the IT team a bottleneckfor productivity needs in the field. With so many projects and people

involved in the collaboration process, espe-cially external partners, security was a majorconcern. PC Construction was setting up allthe permissioning for the FTP servers, andwith users constantly being added andremoved from projects, there was always achance that someone gained access to arestricted file. Even after all of the IT setup,if power was lost at the data center, there wasno access to data until power was restored.Wasted time, security concerns and unreli-able access from the field forced IT to con-stantly look for ways to cut down on costsand maintenance overhead, while makingthe field more self-sufficient and productive.

Finding the Right SolutionLessor first tried popular consumer solu-

tions such as Dropbox and Box. They scoredhigh on ease of use but left Lessor still con-cerned about security and access permis-sions. With so many partners sharing files, fine-

grained access to specific projects and anintegration with Active Directory (AD) wascritical. The organization also needed a fall-back plan for times when the cloud might beinaccessible due to connectivity constraintsor issues. In 2012, Lessor decided to look at Egnyte

for the company’s enterprise file servicesplatform. After a discussion with one of hisdevelopers and conducting research, PCConstruction decided to move forward withimplementing Egnyte as the core of the orga-nization’s file management and its corporatefile server. All departmental file shares have been

migrated into Egnyte from the data center. For example, Egnyte enables marketing andfinance data to be accessible using anydevice from any location, yet IT can stillenforce the same strict level infrastructure ofaccess permissions that existed on the tradi-tional file server. Lessor and his team alsodeployed Egnyte Storage Sync in the datacenter to maintain a local copy of files onpremises and allow fast access. This is nowthe company’s fall-back plan when and if theInternet goes down.Egnyte has become the hub for all project-

based files and collaboration, replacing theFTP setup. The IT department values theintegration because it allows users, includingemployees, contractors and vendors, toaccess the information and make changeswithout bottlenecking the IT departmentwith questions.IT also can provision a standard folder

hierarchy structure every time a potential jobgoes from an active bid to an active project. The folders can be accessed by project stafffrom any device and location — in theoffice, at the job site or on the road. The fold-ers are set up with appropriate permissionsso that project and department employeescan invite external parties to collaborate veryquickly with specific subfolders and not theentire data set.

With PC Construction Business Booming,IT Looks for Better Ways to Collaborate

As Lessor said, “It used to take hoursto provision an FTP site and IT used tobe the bottleneck. Now we have a proj-ect structure up in minutes and userscan initiate collaboration immediatelywith partners without compromisingsecurity.”

Since PC Construction teams oftenfind themselves working with a num-ber of third parties to collaborate onprojects, Lessor didn’t want to wastetime manually inputting every employ-ee and every client, in addition to theirpermissions. PC Construction’s ActiveDirectory is integrated with Egnyte, which allows users to access Egnytewith one set of credentials. If a user isno longer tied to a project or their ADcredentials are disabled, they instantlylose access to all files.

Each project folder has unique per-missions that users set up so they candecide what information a particularperson views. These permissions allow

for contractors, sub-contractors, ven-dors and PC Construction’s teams tostart collaborating within minutes, sav-ing valuable time on projects, such asHotel Vermont and The University ofVermont’s George D. Aiken Center. This control makes for painless collab-oration combined with top-notch secu-rity, which is a number one priority.

In addition to being able to easilyaccess files in the field and strong secu-rity permissioning, Lessor wanted asolution that was simple to use. It wasimportant that not only the company’semployees could understand the soft-ware but their clients and partnerscould as well. With a new andimproved user interface, Egnyte makessyncing, sharing and editing files abreeze for even the most novice com-puter user. In fact, PC Constructionreceived calls from its customers andpartners thanking them for switching toEgnyte.

Lessor said: “I started out lookingfor a tool to improve collaboration on

projects. Other tools would haveallowed me to share files on a few proj-ects but still left me concerned aboutsecurity. With Egnyte, I now have asingle platform that has become our fileserver, addressing departmental andproject needs inside and outside thecompany. All our files across the entirecompany run through Egnyte. Best ofall I have users enjoying and lookingforward to using Egnyte, which speaksfor the ease of use.”

Egnyte has helped PC Constructiondramatically reduce IT operationalcosts and reduce the time it takes toprovision a project by more than 90percent. With Egnyte as the infrastruc-tural backbone of PC Construction, thecompany saves time, money, and putscompany talent to the best use.

Woburn, Mass.’s Woodco MachineryJoins SDLG’s Growing NetworkFollowing the addition of four new

dealer locations in Canada, the UnitedStates also is adding a further locationoffering SDLG wheel loaders.Woodco Machinery, based in Woburn,Mass., joined the SDLG dealer net-work in September. It will sell thebrand’s complete lineup of wheelloaders for the region, as well as pro-vide product support and service.Woodco will provide SDLG wheel

loaders and support to easternMassachusetts and Rhode Island. Thecompany stocks a wide range of con-struction equipment and has a team ofwell-trained sales and serviceman toback its offerings. The addition ofWoodco will strengthen SDLG’s pres-ence in the region and give customersthe support that only comes from anexperienced dealership, according tothe company.Bob Benard, president of Woodco,

said that adding SDLG wheel loadersto the dealership’s lineup wouldenable the company to offer good

quality, brand-new machines to cus-tomers that typically would have pur-chased a used machine.“There’s a great market we can

serve with SDLG wheel loaders,”Bernard said. “Customers that willonly use their machines for seasonalwork, such as snow removal or barkmulching, don’t need the features of apremium, more expensive machine.Other customers only need a second-ary machine that won’t be running formany hours each week. In the past, these customers purchased usedmachines, but with our addition ofSDLG wheel loaders, we can nowoffer them a new, well-made machinethat is fully backed by a warranty andWoodco’s product and service sup-port.”Woodco will sell the SDLG

LG938L, a 2.5 cu. yd. (1.9 cu m)capacity wheel loader; the LG948L, a3.0 cu. yd. (2.2 cu m) capacity wheelloader; the LG959, 4.0 cu. yd. (3 cum) capacity wheel loader; and the

LG958L, which has the same basicspecs as the LG959, but with dry discbrakes rather than wet disc. All fourloaders are backed by a 12-month,1,500-hour warranty.Al Quinn, director of SDLG North

America, said the addition of Woodcobrings a trusted dealer to SDLG’sefforts in the northeast United Statesthat shows great knowledge of theproduct and its potential customers.“Part of the strategy in rolling out

SDLG across North America is topartner with dealerships that areequipped to offer great service andsupport to their customers,” Quinnsaid. “Woodco really knows the cus-tomers and industries in its region andcan provide them with valuableexpertise. Woodco has an outstandingreputation and we couldn’t ask for abetter partner in Massachusetts.”
