There were two well-known New England teams whodeclared 2014 “the Year of the Bridge” — the last-placeBoston Red Sox and the first-place Rhode IslandDepartment of Transportation.

The Red Sox declared it a bridge year because they wereforced to bring very young minor league players up to the bigleagues to fill gaps, show what they could do and help theparent club that fell apart, mired in last place.

The bridges are constructed under the auspices of RIDOT.With more than a half dozen bridge projects completed, nearly completed, ahead of schedule, about to start or at theready — RIDOT continues to spend federal money wisely to

ensure getting future 80/20 federal-state grants for the sever-al prominent spans yet to rebuild.

Duxbury Construction Uses Morooka to Revitalize BeachDuxbury Construction LLC utilized a

Morooka MST2200VD rubber track carriersupplied by Shawmut Equipment to exca-vate the beach on the Standish Shore inDuxbury, Mass. The current beach site hada 3 ft. cliff due to erosion of the sand leav-ing an uneven landscape.

Following detailed plans prepared byStudio 2112 Landscape Architecture,Duxbury Construction worked to restorethe dunes by adding sand and cobble toeliminate the cliff and reduce the slope atthe end of the revetment. The Morookaaided in the dune restoration by haulingsand and cobble from one part of the beacha half mile down the shore line to anotherarea. After moving the material, theystacked the 6 to 8 in. (15 to 20 cm) cobbleto level out the cliff and added sand to evenout the slope of the beach. During the week-long job, theMorooka hauled 100 tons (91 t) of 6 to 8 in. cobble and 600tons (544 t) of sand.

The job was challenging because the hauling could onlybe done during low tide in order to successfully navigatearound the existing sea wall. The Morooka was able to easi-ly climb up and down a steep incline in order to get over thedunes and down the resource area.

“The machine’s performance was excellent. It was fastand easy to drive, making it simple to get around,” said oneof Duxbury Construction’s employees.

The ground bearing pressure of the equipment was a keyfactor in choosing the right machine for the job. The lowground bearing pressure of the Morooka MST2200VDcaused minimal impact on the ecosystem and the tracks leftno ruts in the beach. A wheeled machine would have had asevere impact on the environment. In addition to nursing thebeach, they were able to take the tailgate of the Morooka offand load larger rocks to repair the seawall.

“We were put in a tough position. We had a rental sched-uled through a different company, but we got a call the daythe rental was to start telling us that the machine would not

be available. I then heard of Shawmut Equipment through afriend. I called Shawmut on Monday at noon and they deliv-ered the Morooka to the job site by 2 p.m. that same day. This was incredibly important because we had to workaround the tidal changes. If Shawmut couldn’t supply themachine right away, the project would have been pushedback two weeks,” said Bo Boynton, vice president ofDuxbury Construction. “The Morooka worked great for thejob, allowing us to do everything that we needed to accom-plish within the tight timeframe.”

The Morooka MST2200VD is a 24,046 lb. (10,907 kg)capacity rubber track carrier equipped with a Caterpillar C-7250 hp engine. The machine can travel up to 7.5 mph and isextremely versatile in its application. The MST2200VD hasa low ground bearing pressure, enabling utilization onmuddy or soft job sites. The MST2200VD has a dump bedmeasuring 11 ft. 10 in. (3.6 m) long and 8 ft. 1 in. (2.4 m)wide.

Duxbury Construction LLC is a contractor focusing ongeneral excavation, clearing, water problems, septic systemsand seawalls. For more than 30 years, it has worked through-out the town of Duxbury, as well as other areas of the SouthShore. Shawmut Equipment Company Inc. serves the craneand utility equipment industries in the northeast and AtlanticCanada. Since 1957, Shawmut has offered sales, rentals, parts and service.

Bridge Up in Record Time

Using accelerated bridgetechniques in August,RIDOT replaced the BartonCorner Bridge in Warwick in11 days.

Traditional constructionwould have required neardaily lane closures onInterstate 95 and Route 2.Instead, traffic congestionwas kept to a minimum byshifting lanes on the inter-state and limiting full clo-sures of Route 2 to just fourtemporary periods while thebridges were demolishedand installed.

The former bridge wasbuilt in 1958 and in anadvanced state of deteriora-tion prior to replacement. Asteel shoring system had tobe added to prevent a reduc-tion in carrying capacity. The

bridge’s main girders had become weak due to the impactsof oversized vehicles, so lane shifts were required for bothInterstate 95 north and south. The new bridge raises theheight of the structure to reduce the likelihood of these types

of crashes in the future.RIDOT released a time-lapse video of

the replacement work. D’Ambra Construction of Warwick

was general contractor for the job.

Warren Avenue BridgeRIDOT also completed the 123-ft.

(37.5 m) Warren Avenue Bridge projectin 2014, a vital link to the EastProvidence region, by bringing directaccess for East Bay residents and busi-nesses to the interstate system. Some8,700 daily vehicles cross the bridge, with traffic to-and-from area hospitalsand public and private schools nearby.

The bridge was replaced using a vari-ety of accelerated bridge constructiontechniques, including pre-cast concretecomponents. Like Barton Corner, twohalves of the bridge were built off siteand placed into position when ready.

The entire substructure of the deterio-rating bridge, originally constructed in1959, also was rebuilt. Despite limita-tions at the project site, the bridge was only closed for aboutthree weeks to complete the replacement, which began withtimber support alongside the structure’s piers.

Aetna Bridge Company of Warwick, R.I., executed the$2.9 million project.

Projects Tackled The work, on time and on budget, continued throughout

the state in 2014, with various GCs working under RIDOT.After Barton Corner, the state also replaced and reopened theConant Street Bridge in Pawtucket, along with the RandallStreet Bridge in Providence and the Morgan Avenue Bridge,in Johnston, R.I.

In Newport, RIDOT partnered with the city’s Cliff WalkCommission to celebrate opening two spans of the two-mile

Cliff Walk along Narragansett Bay behind the gilded man-sions that had been damaged during Super Storm Sandy.

Work is ongoing in Barrington as the new temporary (pos-sibly permanent) White Church Bridge is set for completionin less than a year, with the opening scheduled for 2015.RIDOT operations continue weekdays, in 8-hour shifts.Rebar for the new bridge deck and rip rap along the north-west approach began in January. The state also plans to putdown roadway fill at the west approach and to install hollowsteel pipes which will ultimately support the relocated utilitypoles there.

RIDOT closed the Atwells Avenue Bridge and accompa-nying Interstate 95 ramp. The bridge is a critical linkbetween the famed Federal Hill area of Providence and the

downtown.“We closed the bridge

on Monday, Jan. 5, forabout one year for a com-plete rehabilitation,” saidRose Amoros of RIDOT.Detours have been set upusing Eagle and Valleystreets. The AtwellsAvenue Bridge is a toppriority for the state, given the immenseamount of commuter traf-fic, as well as touristsfrom all over NewEngland who come to thispopular section ofProvidence.

The weather has beenfavorable for RIDOT. Except for one late-January blizzard — the first real snow of thewinter — the state has experienced a rela-tively mild season, compared to the winter of2013 to 2014, which brought 15 separatesnowstorms to R.I., causing numerous proj-ect delays.

Work continues on the Great IslandBridge project in Narragansett, from BasinRoad to Galilee Escape Road, with pile driv-ing and area excavation, signage improve-ments to IWAY corridors into downtownProvidence along the Viaduct, form and con-

crete work, bridge fencing, sidewalks andlighting and recently-installed banners alongthe Washington (George Redman) Bridgeand Linear Park in Providence.

“It was a fine year,” said Lewis. “Andwith so many elements working together, itwill get better.”
