involvement in the picturesque community of Sandwich,Mass., one of the most popular spots for tourists all summerin the Upper Cape.

Before opening B&B Excavation Gilfoy had worked as adiverse laborer in the excavation field for 15 years. When hedecided to go out on his own his family was completelybehind him. He began the firm with just one excavator and asix-wheel dump truck. When it came time to make his firsthires, he turned to his own son, Matt, and his son-in-lawRick, along with daughter Marci (Wright), who handles thephones and paperwork and handles community workthrough the local Chamber of Commerce.

His son Matt had truck-driving experience as well as run-ning various pieces of heavy iron equipment, while Matt’sbrother-in-law Rick was a seasoned mechanic, a vital role tokeep the company vehicles in top shape.

Things started slowly and the men were often out search-ing for work, but soon, the Sandwich community’s familiar-ity with the family and their growing reputation for excellentquality of work and customer service began to spread.

“The majority of our business is through Title Five SepticSystems — design, installation, upgrade/repairs, inspectionsand maintenance,” said Bob Gilfoy. “We also provide serv-ices of lot clearing and demolition, foundation excavation,Bobcat services, roadway construction, drainage systems, and town water hook-ups and repairs.”

They began the company with a home office and eventu-ally moved to an office/shop location. Word spread quicklyabout the business.

“Word of mouth is extremely important to us. We reallydon’t do much for advertising, but have been able to buildour excavation company through referrals and repeat cus-tomers,” Gilfoy said. “Our employees are the backbone ofour business. We are successful because of their hard workand dedication.”

Decline in Jobs Enables Expansion Into Home Heating

Because of these referrals, B&B hasadded services to the company over theyears. Rick and Matt became Massachusettslicensed septic inspectors. “We have purchased two pump trucks for

septic maintenance. We have also expandedthe area in which we work to cover the entireCape and some areas off the Cape as well,”said Gilfoy. “We now have twelve full-timeemployees, as well as part time help in thespring and summer months. We are startingour 15th year of service and we hope formany more.”The company has expanded to include an

oil division.“We founded B&B Fuel in 2005 to pro-

vide home heating oil at reasonable rates andsupplement our decrease in excavation workin the cold winter months,” said Gilfoy. “Themajority of our work is for residential cus-tomers, though we have taken commercialprojects as well.“Most recently, we replaced the septic

system at the Sandwich Public Library andreceived excellent reviews from the town ofSandwich. We have done excavation andseptic work for hotels and commercial build-ings in industrial parks as well.”As far as solving challenges, B&B is fore-

most a family business and work together toaddress any issues. “Our employees all realize that our busi-

ness is also our family and we spend timetogether outside the job also,” said Wright.“We have great Christmas parties, employeeappreciation dinners and even vacationstogether.”With more than 30 years of total experi-

ence, B&B Excavation’s friendly and pro-fessional staff serves with reasonable prices

and excellent quality of work. “When we finish the job, your yard may

even look better than before we arrived,”said Gilfoy.

A Tradition of Family and ServiceWhen Matt married Beth she joined the

team and became an excellent addition to theoffice staff. Bob and Becky have five grand-children, who might represent the next gen-eration of B&B. Marci and Rick haveMatthew, Joshua and Kaitlyn, while Mattand Beth have Braden and Evan who maysomeday join the business. “They already enjoy helping around the

office, and are learning to operate equip-ment,” said Wright. “We consider all of ouremployees ‘family,’ even if they aren’t bloodrelated,” said Gilfoy.Water and working with water is a top pri-

ority in Sandwich. The Cape Cod Canalpasses through the Lower Cape throughBourne and around the town and emptiesinto Buzzard’s Bay, the Cape Cod edge ofthe Atlantic.Equally as precious to residents in this

oceanfront vacation spot is the fresh watertributary that splits the very center of town, with the purest of drinking water. Neighborsand tourists come from miles around to fillcountless bottles and jugs from this icy coldspring, in downtown Sandwich. The community of Sandwich trusts B&B

to manipulate water above and underground.

Gilfoy Advises New Firms to Build Solid Reputations

After 30 years of doing so, Bob andBecky are as much of a fixture in town asthat gushing spring fountain which has satis-fied so many.

“Our advice to a new company would beto build a good reputation for your businessby providing excellent service and quality ofwork to your customers. We strive to exceedour customers’ expectations at all that we do— from the person you speak to on thephone to the employee who comes back toloam and seed your yard after work is com-plete,” said Wright. “We treat each job as ifwe were working at our own home and takecare to make it look better when we leavethan when we got there. We constantlyreceive phone calls and letters of thanks andpraise.”

Many of those letters come from commu-nity organizations.

B&B excavating has often supported theCape Cod YMCA, through projects andfinancial donations, and have received manyplaques of recognition, which hold a specialplace on one wall in the office,” according tothe family.

“We support Toys for Tots as a donationsite and also our local food pantry,” saidGilfoy. “This Thanksgiving, we held a fooddrive and were able to donate over 1500items to be distributed. For each item donat-ed to us, we gave a raffle ticket and raffledoff 500 gallons of free oil from our fuel com-pany [B&B Fuel]. Several of us also volun-teered time to the food pantry.”

“We are lifelong Sandwich residents andbelieve in supporting our community andshowing our gratefulness for the way wehave been able to grow our business,” saidGilfoy. “We also work with many excellentrealtors who call us for septic inspections orupgrades on septic systems at properties they

are selling.”B&B Excavation’s office is located on
