Brian Duncan began hybridizing daffodils in 1964, and in 1974 took over Rathowen Daffodils, which he later operated under his name until 2001. He has registered hundreds of cultivars and has long been regarded as among the world’s foremost breeders of standard daffodils. In recent years, he has turned his attention to miniatures and has some very good seedlings.

Theo Sanders Essen, Germany
Theo Sanders, at 72, says he has at best 28 more years for growing daffodils, but that it will not be enough time to realize all his ideas.
He’s had some good ones.

Rod Barwick Tasmania, Australia
Rod Barwick is the fourth generation of a family that has been growing daffodils in the hills “behind Claremont,” Tasmania, since the 1890s. His miniatures are known world-wide, and he continues to make innovative crosses. His series with ‘Canaliculatus’ opens a new door for miniature breeders.

Mike and Geoff Temple-Smith Tasmania, Australia
Mike
GeoffGeoff and Mike Temple-Smith are a father and son team in Tasmania. Geoff began hybridizing in 1948, but not seriously until his son Mike began his efforts in 1975. His goals are 1Y-R minis, improved substance, pink cups and improved fertility.
Mike aims for rimmed flowers in several divisions including miniatures, and flowers with orange/red perianths.

Graham Fleming Australian Capital Territory,
Australia
Graham Fleming (Keira Bulbs) was interested in finding an agricultural enterprise that did not involve summer watering and did not take too much time (!) He began with standard daffodils but realized they did not grow so well for him as the Jacksons. When he discovered only one person was interested in miniatures (Barwick) he turned to them. His original breeding stock came from Barwick. His Div. 6 cultivars are well known in the U.S.

Lawrence Trevanion Australian Capital
Territory, Australia
Lawrence Trevanion has loved daffodils since childhood. He began hybridizing in earnest when he moved to Canberra in 1995. He makes hundreds of crosses every year, mainly with the goal of increasing fertility. He also wants to extend the season, produce new color combinations and improve garden and show qualities in all kinds of daffodils. His new bulbocodiums are quite remarkable.

Paul Rumkorf operated Vanoz Bulbs for some years, but has retired from selling. He has recently moved to Victoria, and has taken all his miniature seedlings with him. He intends to continue his breeding with miniatures. He has a very smooth W-O that is “almost trumpet,” which he hopes survives the move.
