• Heatoilslowly,alwaysuseatimertoremindyouthatyouarepreparingfood,andneverleavecookingfoodunattended.
• Wearclothingthatwillnotdangleontostoveburnersandcatchfire.Turnpotandpanhandlesinward,andusebackburnerswhenpossibletoavoidbumpingthemandspillinghotfoods.
• Keepchildrenandpetsawayfromcookingareas.Makeathree-foot“kid-freezone.”
Outdoor cooking safety tips
• Followtheproductmanufacturer’sinstructionsforplacingandusingyouroutdoorcookingappliances.
• Onlyusegrillsandsmokersoutdoors.Usingthemindoorsorinanyenclosedspace(garage)isafirehazardandexposespeopletodeadlygases.
• Placethemawayfromyourhome’ssiding,deckrailings,andoutfromundereavesandoverhangingbranches.Donotuseonawoodenporch,deck,orbalconyandneverleaveunattendedwhilecooking.Forincreasedsafety,charcoalburnersandotheropen-flamecookingappliancesshouldnotbeoperatedoncombustiblebalconiesorwithin10feetofcombustibleconstruction.
• Emptycoalsandashintoametalcontainerwithatight-fittinglidthatisonlyusedtocollectcoals.Keepthecontaineratleast10feetawayfromthehome.Neverplaceacontainerwithashesonawoodenporch,deck,orbalconyorothercombustiblesurface.Disposeofcoalsandashonlyaftertheyarecool,whichcouldbe3-5days.
• Theuseofoutdoorgas-fueledturkeyfryersthatcooktheturkeyinhotoilisdiscouraged.
If you have a cooking fire
• Alwayskeepalidnearbywhenyouarecooking.Ifasmallgreasefirestartsinapan,smothertheflamesbycarefullyslidingthelidoverthepan.Turnofftheburneranddonotmovethepanuntilitiscompletelycool.
• Neverpourwaterordischargeamultipurpose(ABC)fireextinguisheronagreasefire;itcansplatterandspreadthefire.Makesureyouhavetherighttypeofextinguisherandknowhowtouseit.
• Intheeventofanovenormicrowavefire,turnofftheapplianceandkeepthedoorclosed.
• Whenindoubt,getout!Closethedoorbehindyouwhenyouleavetohelpcontainthefire.Call911afteryouleave.

Installsmokealarmsoneverylevelofyourhome,outsidesleepingareas(hallway),andineachbedroom.Homefiresprinklers,incombinationwithsmokealarms,arereliableandproventobethebestwaytoprotectyourfamilyandyourhomefromfire.
