  • Welcome to ART+OBJECTs final catalogue of 2011. This catalogue is launched after a run of diverse and highly successful auctions which have highlighted the importance of provenance and the vital role played in our culture by dedicated collectors. The recent Pycroft rare book auction is a case in point. Arthur Pycroft (1875 1971) was a committed and lifelong collector whose acute eye acted as a beacon for 21st century rare book collectors in New Zealand and internationally. There was no question of the rarity of his book collection, many items dating to the very earliest published volumes in Australasia.

The defining element of the collection was the imprimatur of Mr Pycroft himself. The simple fact of these volumes having been a part of his collection bestowed an additional level of authenticity that experienced collectors respect and value. The result was the most spectacular rare book auction in New Zealand this century with local and institutional bidders competing with their international counterparts over two nights in early November.

For the A+O team it was a sale which reinforced the age old magic of the auction process pure theatre with gasps as the prices burst through top estimates and spontaneous applause as a new record was set the acclamation as much for the clear signal sent that our treasured history is deeply valued as for the actual price achieved.

This diverse catalogue provides an opportunity for new collections to begin. Over the last three years A+O has presented a range of excellent modern design collections including this year those of leading writer and museum director Douglas Lloyd-Jenkins and Christchurch collector and dealer Ross Morrison, both of whom are acknowledged experts in this burgeoning area of collecting. What these two collections confirmed is that New Zealand collectors in addition to their interest in international classics are now turning their attention to the small but vibrant modernist design scene that bloomed here after WWII.

This current catalogue is a great place to get acquainted with both schools the international practitioners being represented by foundation names such as Le Corbusier, Hans Wegner and Eero Saarinen and later designers and applied artists such as Ettore Sottsass and Dale Chihuly. The New Zealand side of the equation is represented by Bob Roukema, John Crichton, Theo Schoon and Humphrey Ikin. Over fifty years of the finest international and New Zealand design will be on view at ART+OBJECT from December 2 to 8.

Likewise the New Collectors sale catalogue which goes to auction on December 7 is populated with key figures of mid-century international art movements such as Victor Vasarely and David Hockney; figureheads of the Op and Pop Art scenes respectively, and important New Zealand modernist artists such as Louise Henderson, Dennis Knight-Turner and Guy Ngan.

Finally, the directors and staff of A+O would like to thank all our clients and friends who have made 2011, our fifth calendar year of trading, the best to date.

    206. Theo Schoon, a rare and important press moulded stoneware dish. The rectangular dish decorated with an impressed Theo Schoon stamp design. Signed with initials to the base and with affixed label from Steve Rumsey.

In 1985 Theo Schoon was living in Mangere in a retirement home, weak and frail as a result of emphysema. This dish was formed by Steve Rumsey from a Len Castle mould then given to Theo who, sitting cross-legged in bed, decorated the dish with his impressed stamp designs. After firing, the dish was rubbed with manganese dioxide and fired by Steve Rumsey in his electric kiln.

Provenance: From the collection of Steve Rumsey. See NZ Potters Magazine, Volume 27, Number 2, 1985, p19-21, together with a letter of provenance from Steve Rumsey that accompanies the dish. A similar dish is held in the Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa.
