NEW CHAPTER Our Solar System CHAPTER the BIG idea Planets and other objects form a system around our Sun. 3.1 The inner solar system has rocky planets. 3.2 The outer solar system has four giant planets. 3.3 3.4 CHAPTER OUTLINE Small objects are made of ice and rock. The outer solar system has four giant planets. The inner solar system has rocky planets. Summary for 3-1/3-2 The inner/terrestrial planets Slide 2 1. Jupiter: named after the king of the gods. (Zeus) 2. Jupiter is the largest and most massive planet. Jupiter is the 4 th brightest object in the night sky. Jupiter is the first of the Jovian or Jupiterlike planets. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Slide 3 3. Jupiter is one big atmosphere of H (90%) and He (10%). (no surface) 4. The Great Red spot is a huge storm the size of 2 earths. Jupiter is the 1 st of the Jovian planets, Jovian means Jupiter-like 2006 Hubble Space Telescope discovered Jupiter Little Red Spot Slide 4 Jupiters Interior *Its diameter is 11 times bigger than that of the Earths. Overall, Jupiter is over 1000 times the size of Earth. Slide 5 5. Cloud tops are -220 F to the core which is 55,000 F. (hotter than the sun) 6. The pressure is 30 million times the earth. The wind speeds on Jupiter reach up to 400 mph Slide 6 7. Jupiter has 62 moons. (2015) **11 moons were discovered in 2003 8. Four main moons: Ganymede, Callisto, Io, & Europa. (the Galilean moons) *Jupiter has 16 main / larger moons Slide 7 9. Ganymede the largest moon rocky core, surrounded by a ice surface (Larger than mercury.) *Named after the cup-bearer to the Greek gods on Mt Olympus. 1 of 3 moons confirmed to have liquid water below the surface. Slide 8 10. Io Voyager 1 (1979) found 11 erupting volcanoes Slide 9 11. Europa water beneath the surface thin oxygen atmosphere Europa has cracks in the icy surface. Temp -200 degrees Fahrenheit Confirmed to have liquid water below the surface. Slide 10 12. Callisto most heavily cratered moon Callisto is the 3 rd largest moon in the Solar System Giant impact ring on Callisto taken by Voyager 1 on March 6, 1979.
